Designers Construct Crayon-Inspired Looks for New York City Bloomingdale’s
“Unmellow Yellow” by Nanette Lepore
For spring 2015, Bloomingdale’s reached out to several designers to create pieces that both matched and were constructed by iconic Crayola colors. The pieces are designed with playful colors, yet have a sharp edge, the points of the crayons adding 3D elements to many of the elaborate pieces. The most dynamic, a bright yellow dress designed by Nanette Lepore, showcases a bustier of organized pinwheel crayon segments extending from the ornate neckline.
Other designers chosen were Rebecca Taylor, Clover Canyon, Rebecca Minkoff, Torn by Ronny Kobo, and Parker. Parker added a creative spin to the project, incorporating the Jungle Green crayon wrappers as faux-fabric within their designed romper. Designers Derek Farrar and Laurieanne Gilner explained that not only was the piece environmentally sound, but also gave them a serious case of spring fever.
The pieces, photographed by Matthew Carasella, are currently on display at the 59th Street Bloomingdale’s location in New York City, and more detailed shots can be found on Carasella’s portfolio site here. (via Laughing Squid)
Update: It should also be noted that another artist, Herb Williams (previously), has been creating similar Crayon fashions since 2007.

Southern fur seal pups in Kaikoura (NZ) have figured out a way to avoid taking their first swim in predator-filled waters. By travelling up a nearby stream, they reach a secluded waterfall pool where they can learn vital swimming skills in complete safety. A pup makes this journey only once, spending 3 days in the pool before returning to the sea with its newfound skills.

Whats going on with #TheDress?
At FlickrHQ we were totally intrigued by #TheDress illusion. Was it white and gold, or blue and black? Opinion is strongly divided, voices have been raised and much confusion has followed.
Here’s our own attempt to clear it up by experiment.
Human vision is affected by ‘color constancy’ – thats why when we’re indoors things look natural, but a camera sometimes sees it as ‘yellow,’ and when we’re outdoors we see a natural scene, but the camera sometimes sees it as ‘blue’.
Add both a blue and a yellow light source and the camera will capture both yellow and blue tints – like the foreground and background of the dress picture.
Thanks to our tendency towards seeing color constancy, some people’s visual systems assume there is only one color light source (when there are actually two). Some people will correct towards a daylight light source – the dress looks yellow and white – and some will correct towards an indoors light source, so the dress looks blue and black.
Here’s a video to illustrate the illusion in action:
The elephant silhouette stays the same color throughout the video; it’s a combination of blue and yellow tones (like the dress). When the elephant is up against a blue background (i.e. like daylight lighting) it appears strongly yellow and when it’s up against a yellow background (i.e. like it’s being illuminated by indoors lighting) it appears strongly blue.
