by William Hughes

Fall foliage 2014

by Arnold Chao

When autumn comes around, we always look forward to seeing all the vibrant gold and red colors in natural landscapes. Here’s a small sample of the splendid photography that’s showing up in a fall foliage search on Flickr for this year.

“The clonal nature of aspen is never more apparent than in fall, when clones can be distinguished by their varied hues.” – Jeff Mitton

“Looking down Landslide Valley and the blaze of fall colours. In 1926, Willard Isaiah Thayer (1872-1956) opens Hiawatha Lodge and Recreation Park in the Hiawatha Highlands, overlooking Landslide Valley. During the 1920’s Thayer develops the area around Crystal Falls and Landslide Valley as a tourist destination for: hiking / nature trails, camping, swimming, fishing and skiing. Thayer, a local entrepreneur, started Thayer Lumber Company in 1910, had various interests in forestry, saw milling, aggregate extraction (Landslide Valley), and tourism. Kinsmen Park was created by Thayer’s donation of land to the local Kinsmen Club. In the 1970’s the City of Sault Ste. Marie bought the rest of Thayer’s estate to create a conservation area.” – twurdemann

“Contrasting a great landscape with “good” light in the sky is the most obvious approach to landscape photography. This means the biggest amount of freedom in composition and the highest potential epicness, if the conditions are cooperative. However, I’ve excluded the sky more often in my photos lately and often like the results even more than the photos I take with the obvious way. This is a wonderful example of these tendencies. It will probably end up being my favourite composition from the Adirondacks, condensing the place to its essence. It’s a stand of colorful trees beside the Cascace Lakes right next to the road between Lake Placid and Keene.” – Jan Zwilling

"Google it!"

by Seth Godin

The job is no longer to recite facts, to read the bio out loud, to explain something better found or watched online.

No, the job is to personally and passionately make us care enough to look up the facts for ourselves.

When you introduce a concept, or a speaker, or an opportunity, skip the reading of facts. Instead, make a passionate pitch that drives inquiry. In the audience, in your employees, in your customers...

The only reason people don't look it up is that they don't care, not that they're unable. So, your job is to get them to care enough.

[You can even send them to DuckDuckGo, if you can handle three syllables.]

The Bros Mario: Noir

actionhankbeard:

A few months ago I was trying to think of a way I could re-imagine the characters from my favorite Nintendo series. The Bros Mario Noir is a series that takes the characters from the colorful world of Super Mario Bros and throws them into a dark, gritty world inspired by classic film noir movies.

OK Gos Latest Music Video Features Hundreds of Umbrella Wielding Dancers umbrellas music video dancing

Only four months after their music video for the “The Writing’s on the Wall” filled with optical illusions, OK Go are back with yet another meticulously choreographed dance video for “I Won’t Let You Down.” Filmed in Japan, this new clip features more than a few umbrellas, Honda UNI-CUB personal vehicles (a kind of tiny robo scooter), and a cast of hundreds. Make sure to stick around for the final shot, hard to believe it’s even real, but knowing OK Go, it certainly is.

When he was 13 years old, New York-based photographer Thomas Prior won a drawing contest and used the money to buy a Pentax K1000 camera. By the age of 20, while still attending SVA, he began assisting on commercial shoots while developing his own direct, almost simplistic approach to photography. Prior relies almost completely on natural lighting and a brilliant eye to capture uncanny images in unexpected places. Gathered here is a selection of photos from the past few years, you can see more on his frequently updated Tumblr, and a recently created Instagram account. (via All of this Is Rocket Science)
