cosmos: a spacetime odyssey

by kris

20140313-cosmos

i saw so many problems in the first episode of cosmos with neil degrasse tyson. i don’t see how anyone is going to learn anything

  • neil degrasse tyson grew and shrank at will, and stood directly in front of the big bang without harm coming to him
  • he walked around earth around the first appearance of life on the planet! how many countless microbes did he spread to earth’s past
  • he survived the blast wave from the meteor that killed all the dinosaurs

my kids are going to watch this and try to shrink off the goddamned roof!! thanks for nothing, “doctor” tyson and “seth” macfarlane

(actually the show is great, i teared up, please watch it)

The US is an 'enemy of the internet'

by Sean Hollister

Every year, Reporters Without Borders publishes a list of "Enemies of the Internet," designed to draw attention to countries that disrupt the freedom of information with propaganda, surveillance, and censorship. For the very first time, that list now includes the United States of America.

It's perhaps not surprising that the US would make the cut, given the revelations that Edward Snowden has provided over the past year. Still, it sends a powerful message to see the country on the same list as Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and the "Great Firewall" of China. However, the US isn't the only superpower that's new for 2014. The UK and India are also being accused of mass surveillance, and Russia of both surveillance and censorship.

Reporters without Borders notes that government agencies like the NSA, rather than entire governments, may be the "enemies" in question, but the organization seems to worry that those governments are setting a bad example by tolerating such behavior:

"The mass surveillance methods employed in these three countries, many of them exposed by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden, are all the more intolerable because they will be used and indeed are already being used by authoritarians countries such as Iran, China, Turkmenistan, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain to justify their own violations of freedom of information."

In a timely move, the US government just relinquished part of its control over the internet today. The US Chamber of Commerce will no longer have oversight of ICANN, the organization that manages IP addresses, domain names, and other administrative functions.

Intimate Black and White Portraits of Exotic Animals in Captivity

by DL Cade

zooportrait1

It’s been a very news heavy couple of days, with much of the news being depressing or controversial at that. So if you need a break from all the Terry Richardsons and bankruptcies of the world, this stunning photo series by Czech photographer and graphic designer Lukas Holas should do the trick nicely.

Unfortunately, information about the series is extremely hard to come by, and our efforts to contact Mr. Holas directly have been for naught. The only real description the series has is the sentence “Animals are a matter of my heart…” which accompanies the wildly popular series on Holas Behance site and actually captures their essence quite well.

Additionally, we know from Trend Hunter that the photos were taken at a local zoo, and made to look like studio portraits in post by inserting a pure black background. Here’s a look at the entire series:

The beauty of these photographs is that the captive animals are, in a sense, set free of their enclosures. The photos might show a wild zebra or lion, and because there is no busy background to distract from the subject, all of the animals’ majestic details stand out in stark relief.

To see even more portraits from the series or if you’d like to purchase prints, head over to Holas Fine Arts America page by clicking here.

Spinsterhood and the American Way

by Rebecca, The Clothes Horse

Art director Suzanne Heintz got tired of well-meaning friends and family asking her when she was going to get married and settled down, so like an empowered modern woman she went out and bought a family. With her Ken-doll handsome husband and pigtailed mannequin daughter she experiences all the stereotypical family landmarks. As Heintz states that, "We do all those family things, all the while capturing those Kodak Moments. Because it's not really about the journey, or a genuine human connection, when you're kids are screaming, "are we there yet?" Is it? It's about the picture in front of the sign. 'Get back in the car, we got the picture. Now, let's go eat.'" She realized by not "settling down" in the traditional sense she wouldn't miss the wedding, but she would miss the photo album! It's a fun, quirky, and perhaps slightly creepy set of photographs that does make you stop and think for a minute.

Water Droplets Flow Uphill through a Superheated Maze Thanks to the Leidenfrost Effect

Water Droplets Flow Uphill through a Superheated Maze Thanks to the Leidenfrost Effect water science mazes

The folks over at Science Friday made this fascinating video about the Leidenfrost Effect, where water dropped on an extremely hot surface is capable of floating instead of immediately evaporating. While studying the bizarre effect, physicists at the University of Bath realized that not only does the water float, but under the right conditions and temperatures it can actually climb upward. The playful experiments lead to the creation of an incredible superheated maze. (via The Awesomer)

ILLUMINATED CODE FROM SPACE

Bioartis Haari Tesla (behance) - "Macrocosm and microcosm is an ancient Greek Neo-Platonic schema of seeing the same patterns reproduced in all levels of the cosmos, from the largest scale (macrocosm or universe-level) all the way down to the smallest scale (microcosm or sub-sub-atomic or even metaphysical-level). In the system the midpoint is Man, who summarizes thecosmos." - I was doing some researches  and I found experiment with miniatures of space so I decided to try my own. The result has been nebulae, galaxies and supernovae transformed into microorganism.

Bill Cunningham’s Double-Vintage Photos of New York

by Marina Galperina
Bill Cunningham’s Double-Vintage Photos of New York

Fashion photographer Bill Cunningham shot the above image on the subway in the late ’60s/early ’70s, as part of an eight-year project on view at the New York Historical Society on March 14th. Shooting fellow photographer Editta Sherman in various authentic vintage ensembles scoured from vintage shops and auction houses, Cunningham his 1,800 historic locations in the city. Time and space is not coming apart at the seams. “Facades,” Bill Cunningham, Mar 14 – Jun 15,  New York Historical Society, Manhattan (Images: NY History.org, The Cut)
