The Art of Laurent Durieux

The Art of Laurent Durieux

Laurent Durieux is an illustrator based in Bruxelles, Belgium and has worked for Mondo, Dark Hall Mansion, Acid Free Gallery and more. His art might remind you of a retro-futuristic world of H.G. Wells and the 1960s pop-culture. Laurent's work has such a beautiful composition and details that makes you just stop to admire his work.

Japanese child actress Mana was embarrassed that she couldn’t pronounce Guillermo Del Toro’s name so he gave her special permission to call him “Totoro-san” instead.

Gah! So cute.

Soda Sequestration

by xkcd

Soda Sequestration

How much CO2 is contained in the world's stock of bottled fizzy drinks? How much soda would be needed to bring atmospheric CO2 back to preindustrial levels?

Brandon Seah

For most of the history of civilization, there were about 270 parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. In the last hundred years, industrial activity has pushed that number up to 400 parts per million.

One "part per million" of CO2 weighs about 7.8 billion tons. A can of soda contains in the neighborhood of 2.2 grams of CO2, so you would need about 450 quadrillion cans of soda. That's enough to cover the Earth's land with ten layers of cans.

There's clearly not enough room to do this. Even if we stacked the cans up to the edge of space,[1]I don't have any hard numbers, but my guess would be that you could probably stack supermarket soda six-pack crates a few hundred meters high before the bottom layer ruptures. they'd still take up an area the size of Rhode Island.[2]We shouldn't actually try it, given what happened last time.

We'd need to add even more cans to keep up with ongoing emissions. We're currently increasing the atmosphere's CO2 concentration by an average of 2 parts per million each year:

At that rate, we'd need to add one can of soda per person every 30 seconds, which is about 10,000 times the current consumption rate.[3]The global average is one can per person every 5 days. In the US, the average is one every 18 hours. That would add a new layer of cans to the ground every 6[4]I originally had the wrong number here; thank you to Paulina for catching it! years or so.

This layer of cans would get pretty annoying.

Are there any ways out of this predicament?

In some areas, you can turn in soda cans for recycling and receive a small amount of money; in Massachusetts, where I live, it's 5 cents. If you collected one year's worth of soda cans—instead of layering them across the Earth's surface—and emptied them out, you could redeem them for $372 trillion.

With that much money, you could simply buy the world's current reserves[5]Source: xkcd.com/980, bottom right. of coal, oil, and natural gas—the source of the whole problem.

Then, you put it all back in the ground and leave it there.

Problem solved.

Water Droplets Flow Uphill through a Superheated Maze Thanks to the Leidenfrost Effect water science mazes

The folks over at Science Friday made this fascinating video about the Leidenfrost Effect, where water dropped on an extremely hot surface is capable of floating instead of immediately evaporating. While studying the bizarre effect, physicists at the University of Bath realized that not only does the water float, but under the right conditions and temperatures it can actually climb upward. The playful experiments lead to the creation of an incredible superheated maze. (via The Awesomer)

Intimate Black and White Portraits of Exotic Animals in Captivity

by DL Cade

zooportrait1

It’s been a very news heavy couple of days, with much of the news being depressing or controversial at that. So if you need a break from all the Terry Richardsons and bankruptcies of the world, this stunning photo series by Czech photographer and graphic designer Lukas Holas should do the trick nicely.

Unfortunately, information about the series is extremely hard to come by, and our efforts to contact Mr. Holas directly have been for naught. The only real description the series has is the sentence “Animals are a matter of my heart…” which accompanies the wildly popular series on Holas Behance site and actually captures their essence quite well.

Additionally, we know from Trend Hunter that the photos were taken at a local zoo, and made to look like studio portraits in post by inserting a pure black background. Here’s a look at the entire series:

The beauty of these photographs is that the captive animals are, in a sense, set free of their enclosures. The photos might show a wild zebra or lion, and because there is no busy background to distract from the subject, all of the animals’ majestic details stand out in stark relief.

To see even more portraits from the series or if you’d like to purchase prints, head over to Holas Fine Arts America page by clicking here.

LOL: Shaquille O’Neal Crowdfunding ‘Shaq Fu 2′ Video Game

by Germain Lussier

Shaq Fu 2

Shaquille O’Neal wants to make a video game. Scratch that. He wants to make another video game. The star of the 1994 fighting game Shaq-Fu has taken to IndieGoGo to raise funds for a reboot of that title, called Shaq-Fu: A Legend Reborn. Check out the pitch video, teaser and more below.

The full IndieGoGo can be accessed here, but here’s a teaser of the game.

And here’s the pitch video:

Here’s how the site says Shaq Fu 2 will be different from the original, which they truly, truly hate.

Shaq Fu is what the original game should have been – an instant classic.  We’re talking Streets of Rage meets Street Fighter meets Devil May Cry. It’s a modern day take on the classic beat ‘em up.  Play as Shaquille O’Neal – learn hundreds of moves and battle techniques, take onthousands of enemies with dozens of cool melee weapons, battle bosses in dynamic arenas, master cool finishing moves and play with your buddies in COOP mode or against each other in player vs player combat.

In Shaq Fu, dozens of unique and varied enemies await which require careful use of tactics.  The game also features destructive environments, awesome power ups  and a series of well-designed, beautiful levels with interesting progression.  This is all tied together by what very well might be the story of the century, a performance worthy of an Oscar, by the Big Diesel, in his battle against a villain for the ages – the mysterious Black Star Ninja.

Besides the obvious crazy nature of the game, the list of incentives is pretty funny too. It ranges from exclusive characters in the game to Shaq following you on Twitter or hanging at his house. And while it’s all done with a sense of humor, you definitely get the sense the people behind the game are taking it very seriously. They want to make a great game and now you can help them.

There’s also a disclaimer that while Shaq is obviously rich and is investing his own money in the game, the IndieGoGo is just a small part of the total cost.

Do you think Shaq Fu: The Legend Reborn is a good idea?

417 – Pesscription

Pessimism is far from my only ism, that’s not actually healthy no matter what Guy claims. Ya gotta mix it up with at least some cynicism and/or defeatism.

Don’t like the Twogag Facebook Page, it’s probably the worst.

sewbro:

A miss fox plush from gunshow! KC green’s comics are so great and miss fox is one of my favorites. I planned to make the rabbits but I think I prefer miss fox overall.

She’s made of minky, and alova. I would have used all minky for her fur but I didn’t have the right shade of brown.

She ended up being a little more complicated than I had expected. The design is so simple and fluid that it was a little harder to render in 3D than I thought it would be but I like how she turned out. She was meant to be a little more elongated but the minky gave horizontally.
