by Steve Dent

"...enabling a 300-mile, $25,000 electric car..."
You have my attention.

Battery research that tantalizes and then goes bust has soured our dreams of longer-lasting smartphone and EVs. But do you know who hasn't given up hope? Sir James freaking Dyson, that's who. His company just invested $15 million in Sakti3, one of th...

The Milky Way galaxy is full of ripples (and larger than you think)

by Jon Fingas
When you picture the Milky Way galaxy, you probably imagine a relatively flat disc. Well, you may have to get that image out of your head -- astrophysicists have determined that the galaxy has at least four "ripples," making it look more like a piece...

Hypnotic Kinetic Sculptures by Jennifer Townley Fuse Mathematics and Art

by Christopher Jobson

completely hypnotic

Although powered by simple rotary engines, these kinetic sculptures by Netherlands-based sculptor Jennifer Townley are dizzying in complexity. Repetitive patterns twist, merge, and cascade as individually sculpted elements rotate on a single axis, an intricate fusion of art and mathematics. From Townley’s artist statement:

The works derive from her fascination with science, with an emphasis on physics, engineering and mathematics. Geometric patterns in Islamic art or mathematical drawings of Dutch artist M. C. Escher often serve as an inspiration. Images where lines and figures match each other so perfectly they could be repeated indefinitely. This infinity, regularity and obedience is what Townley also finds fascinating about mechanical machines; they are robust, strenuous and seemingly immortal. She is captivated by how a machine can convert a simple circular motion (rotary engine) into a very complicated nonlinear or chaotic movement pattern.

You can see more of her work on her website and on Vimeo. (via Prosthetic Knowledge)

Here's how you make a 3D printing gun using Lego

by Jon Fingas
What do you do if you want to 3D print in any direction, but can't buy a pre-made pen like the 3Doodler? If you're Vimal Patel, you build your own. He melded a hot glue gun with a powered Lego mechanism (really, Technic) to extrude filament in any ax...

Tesla promises to 'end' Model S range anxiety on March 19th

by Jon Fingas
If you drive an electric car, you're probably all too familiar with range anxiety -- the fear that you'll travel too far and find yourself stranded by the side of the road. Tesla drivers may not have to worry about that for much longer, however. The ...

Chocolate dessert blooms like a flower right before you eat it

by Casey Chan

via Fatbob

I like food that's as close to being alive (or fresh, depending on your perspective) as possible. That's partly because it tastes better but also because it's tingly to see food move when you don't expect it too. This blooming chocolate dessert is a mover, all right. As you pour the cream onto the dish, the chocolate strip opens up like a flower.
