El animal más mortífero del mundo

by alvy@microsiervos.com (Alvy)

Mosquito-Animal-Mortiferol
¿Cuánta gente muere cada año debido a diversos animales?

¿Es el tiburón? ¿Quizá el ser humano? ¡No! El animal más mortífero del mundo es el mosquito, tal y como explica BillG en su blog, en la que ha llamado semana-anti-mosquitos.

A Free Self-Management System to Stay on Track

by behanceteam
Our own creation from wehavestandards.com

Our own creation from wehavestandards.com

Jake Lodwick has created an online-customizable and free-print-out management system called Standards. In Lodwick’s own words:

Every week, he uses this site to print a PDF with the things he wants to do (and not do) that week. Then he tapes it to a wall and puts a check or an X in each box as the week goes on.

It reminds us of the chore-calendars kids have at school when learning to complete tasks regularly. While this grown-up version does not come with gold stars, it can help you to obtain things like better habits, more money, and a balanced work schedule (or, according to the version we created, at least a Pulitzer Prize).

Try it out here.

lamb meatballs with feta and lemon

by deb

lamb meatballs with feta, olives and lemon

Despite trying to provide ample evidence here, nobody believes me when I say that I get no special pleasure out of weeknight cooking — and guys, it’s like my chosen career, which doesn’t bode well for those of us who are no place near a kitchen all day. In an ideal world it would be relaxing, a way to unwind as we talked about our days while snapping ends off asparagus and rinsing rice before we cooked it. We’d make food that surprised and delighted us, food that exceeded our humble weeknight expectations every time and righted all of the day’s wrongs. And then the dishes would magically wash themselves. In reality, weeknight cooking is usually about practicality; hurried and hastily chopped, and all too often with a 4.5 year-old having a hangry meltdown at my feet because he didn’t want baked potatoes with broccoli for dinner, he wanted spaghetti and meatballs. Please send in the violins.

what you'll need
lamb, tomato pasta, breadcrumbs, egg, feta

Nevertheless, despite how wide the gap is between this ideal and my relative reality, I do try to close it, with varying degrees of success. And although I have little interest in helping preschoolers fulfill their life goal of subsisting exclusively on pasta and pizza, I am not immune to the occasional politely worded request. It’s from these two places that we had lamb meatballs last night and everyone was, for once, happy.

NSA spying means Brazil's $4.5B fighter jets won't be built by Boeing

by Cory Doctorow
Brazil's buying $4.5B worth of fighter jets. And rather than buy them from American military-industrial complex go-to Boeing, they're buying them from Sweden's Saab. Why? A contract with Boeing is synonymous with NSA surveillance. Multiply this by every country in the world and you start to get a sense of the cost of letting the NSA run around without any adult supervision. (via Techdirt)

The 38-page bread recipe

by Jason Kottke

Tartine Bread

In his cookbook, Tartine Bread, Chad Robertson lays out, over 38 pages, the recipe for what might be the best bread in the world. The first time through, the recipe takes two weeks to make.

To Chad, bread is the foundation of a meal, the center of daily life, and each loaf tells the story of the baker who shaped it. He developed his unique bread over two decades of apprenticeship with the finest artisan bakers in France and the United States, as well as experimentation in his own ovens.

A streamlined version of the recipe is available from the NY Times. (via smithsonian)

Artist Samantha Keely Smith paints abstract oceanic landscapes that are at once menancing and serene, a clash of light and color that she refers to as “internal landscapes.” Using oil paint, enamel, and shellac, Smith uses an additive and subtractive process by partially destroying her progress several times before completion. This cyclical process, much like the timeless crash of ocean tides against the shore, adds an additional level of texture to her work. She shares in a 2013 interview with NeverLazy Magazine:

My images are not at all real places or even inspired by real places. They are emotional and psychological places. Internal landscapes, if you will. The tidal pull and power of the ocean makes sense to me in terms of expressing these things, and I think that is why some of the work has a feel of water about it. My work speaks of things that are timeless, and I think that for most of us the ocean represents something timeless.

Currently based in New York, Smith generally doesn’t work with galleries but instead interacts directly with collectors. You can see more recent work on Tumblr and Facebook. (via My Modern Met, Incomplete)
