Tony Zhou’s masterful "Every Frame a Painting" series returns to take on Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2011 film starring Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan, once described by the late Roger Ebert as "an elegant exercise in style."

Zhou shows how the film comes "alive" by taking a few scenes and dividing them into quadrants, demonstrating how Refn uses an otherwise conventional storytelling tool to do unconventional things. Shots that split the actors left and right help tell two different stories at the same time. Splitting top to bottom helps the characters show their inner feelings through gestures and fidgeting in a way that faces and dialogue can't. Amazon reportedly wants to buy RadioShack stores to better compete with Apple

Amazon is reportedly in discussion with RadioShack to buy some of the company's brick-and-mortar stores after the troubled electronics chain files for chapter 11 bankruptcy. Bloomberg says that the Seattle-based e-commerce giant is considering using the stores as showrooms for its hardware, and as pick-up and drop-off centers for items purchased online. Both Amazon and Radio Shack declined to comment on the situation, but two people apparently familiar with the matter said that Amazon may use the locations to give people a chance to try its growing range of hardware, including its range of Kindle tablets, its Fire smartphone, and its new Echo speaker.

Monopoly is being sold with real money inside

Toymaker Hasbro is celebrating the 80th anniversary of Monopoly's introduction in France by replacing the fake money in 80 sets with real cash. The sets will be distributed among 30,000 specially branded editions of the game, with only one of these replacing every note on the board with real money (a total windfall of €20,580 or $23,348). Ten additional sets will contain €300 ($340) in twenties, fifties, and a single €100 bill while 69 other sets will offer €150 ($170) in tens and twenties. "We wanted to do something unique," brand manager Florence Gaillard told the AFP. "When we asked our French customers, they told us they wanted to find real money in their Monopoly boxes."

Ocean Gravity: Spectacular Footage of Freediver Guillaume Nery Flying through Swift Ocean Currents North of Tahiti

Filmed late last year by director and underwater cameraman Julie Gautier, this amazing footage shows free diver Guillaume Néry as he’s carried by swift currents through Tiputa pass, part of the Rangiroa atoll about 355 km Northeast of Tahiti. When you hear about strong currents near the ocean or large lakes, it’s difficult to visualize exactly how they work, or the power they carry. This film should quickly put those mysteries to rest. The speeds Néry reaches in this video seem almost impossible without the help of equipment or flippers. You can see some behind-the-scenes footage and read a bit more (in French) on their website. Gautier and Nery previously collaborated on this bone-chilling “base jump” into Dean’s Blue Hole in 2010.

Weather photographer Mike Hollingshead, whose impressive storm photography we first featured around this time last year, has taken his editing a bit further by importing his supercell thunderstorm photos into Photoshop and setting them in motion. Hollingshead says these animations aren’t created like more traditional cinemagraphs, where moving elements from a video are isolated and the rest of the image is masked out. Instead, he uses only a static image and creates the animation from thin air. Most of the photos you see here were shot in Nebraska between 2004-2013. You can see many more examples on his website.

Many of his images are composites of two photos taken from the same location, a shorter exposure of the sky merged with a significantly longer exposure of the ground which is then manipulated in Lightroom. The Pirate Bay comes back online seven weeks after police raid

A phoenix has replaced the iconic pirate ship atop The Pirate Bay today, celebrating the site's rise from the ashes. The torrent site's servers were raided by Swedish police forces over seven weeks ago, and has been offline ever since. But today, The Pirate Bay lives once more.

At the time of the police raid in the greater Stockholm area last month, it wasn't clear whether The Pirate Bay would ever return. The site and its founders have been relentlessly persecuted by authorities, with many of its original creators either behind bars or separated from the torrent site.

SimSect: Rod Humble Announces Cults & Daggers

Rod Humble, the developer I always think of as being responsible for the majority of the interesting ideas in The Sims 2 and 3, has announced a new solo project. Going by the name Cults & Daggers [official site], it’s a turn-based strategy game ” about building an ancient religion in the time between the death of Buddha and the birth of Christ “. This involves sending disciples to the various regions of the world where they perform tasks ranging from street preaching and recruitment to investigating the occult and killing enemies. I’ve already spent some time with an early version.

There’ll be extensive thoughts to follow but as I’ve been wrapped up in Dying Light for most of the week, I haven’t had chance to learn the intricacies of the game. It has the kind of interface that takes a little time to crack, particularly since the tutorial text isn’t in place yet, but every attempt is a little more rewarding than the last.

The aim of the game is to have your cult create the most Hope over 12 rounds of play, each of which is divided into several turns. To do this, you’ll attempt to build the reputation of your faith, by spreading the Good (or Bad) Word, while keeping three other nascent faiths at bay. So far, I’ve mostly attempted to keep my disciples hidden, blaspheming and generally messing with local beliefs while attempting to pin my treacherous behaviour on my opponents.

It’s possible to weaponise the occult, discover miracles on a procedural ‘tech tree’ and interfere with the politics of the world. In short, it’s exactly the kind of complicated that appeals to me, wrapped in a novel setting.

I’m absolutely hooked by the theme and the world is an active place, with plagues and wars interrupting my plots, but I don’t always find the results of my actions clear. It took me a while to get my head around the superficially similar Dominions as well, though, and that hasn’t left my hard drive since. I’m also keen to try the multiplayer, which seems like it’ll be perfectly suited to the kind of treachery and double-dealing that is the mark of the great slow-burn strategy games. I’ll write more about Cults & Daggers closer to launch

Há alguns anos venho defendendo a utilização de engines de games para a criação de maquetes virtuais, algo que empresas como a Enodo vem fazendo e que a própria Crytek tem incentivado, principalmente por permitir que mudanças sejam feitas em tempo real.

Com os gráficos de tais kits de desenvolvimento se tornando cada vez mais realistas, acredito que eles podem servir como excelentes ferramentas de auxilio por exemplo para arquitetos, o que fica bem claro ao vermos a belíssima criação de Benoit Dereau.

Tendo trabalhado no desenvolvimento de mapas para modificações do Half-Life 2, Dishonored e Left 4 Dead, o level designer queria incrementar o seu portfólio e para isso criou a Unreal Paris, uma demo que nos permite explorar um apartamento extremamente realista criado com a Unreal Engine 4.

Contando com texturas, efeitos de iluminação e reflexos dignos de fazer inveja a qualquer jogo, o trabalho do artista impressiona por passar a sensação de estarmos realmente explorando aquele ambiente e se você não quiser se limitar a assistir o vídeo divulgado por ele, poderá baixar a demo aqui.

É claro que algo assim não terá toda a ação que estamos acostumados a ver em jogos – a proposta não é essa – e temos que considerar que recriar um pequeno apartamento é muito mais fácil do que reproduzir expressões faciais ou mesmo uma enorme cidade, porém, isso não diminui a capacidade de Dereau ou do quão poderosas são estas engines.

O engraçado é pensar que, mesmo sendo alguém que vive dizendo que ainda se contenta com a qualidade visual dos jogos da sétima geração, adoraria poder jogar algo com um nível de detalhes como o visto nesta demo.
