Ressonância vegetal

by Janara Lopes

sqUvc

– wiki

The Honey Hunters of Nepal

by Xeni Jardin
Photo: Andrew Newey.

Photo: Andrew Newey.

Here's a stunning series of images by photographer Andrew Newey of Nepalese honey hunters. Newey spent two weeks among the Gurung ethnic group in central Nepal, documenting their traditional beekeeping practices.

High in the Himalayan foothills of central Nepal Gurung honey hunters gather twice a year, risking their lives to harvest the honey from the world’s largest honeybee. For hundreds of years, the skills required to practise this ancient and sacred tradition have been passed down through the generations, but now both the number of bees and traditional honey hunters are in rapid decline as a result of increased commercial interests and climate change.

Photoset: andrewnewey.com. You can buy matted prints.

The Guardian ran some of the images back in February, with some descriptive captions that help you understand what the hunters are doing.

In the image shared here, you can see a hunter using two simple tools: a handmade rope ladder, and a pair of long sticks called tangos. Most of the honeybees' nests are situated on steep cliffs.

LIFE photo essay of 1960s Wiccans in the UK

by David Pescovitz

In 1964, LIFE magazine published a photo essay titled "Real Witches at Work," about Wiccans in contemporary England. They've just posted a number of those striking images plus others, including the beautiful shot above. Of course, people practicing witchcraft in the nude has always freaked out (and turned on) the squares. Here's how Mrs. Ray Bone, one of the Wiccans interviewed in LIFE at the time, responded to that mindset: “It seems obvious to me that people can be just as immoral with their clothes on as with them off.” Real Witches at Work: Photos of English Pagans in the 1960s

A Dystopian Sci-Fi Movie Filmed Completely under the Radar in China … Starring Ai Weiwei

by Christopher Jobson

A Dystopian Sci Fi Movie Filmed Completely under the Radar in China ... Starring Ai Weiwei science fiction movies China

Just announced today, The Sand Storm is a short film directed by New York filmmaker Jason Wishnow that was shot completely under the radar in China, starring none other than dissident artist Ai Weiwei in his acting debut. How such an audacious and risky endeavor came into being is pretty mind-blowing given the heavy amount of surveillance surrounding the artist. The movie takes place in a dystopian future where Ai Weiwei plays the role of a smuggler in a world without water.

The existence of The Sand Storm was kept heavily under wraps while shooting in Beijing. Ai Weiwei has been closely watched by the government since his 2011 imprisonment and authorities still have yet to return his passport. While the short film has already been shot beginning to end, the filmmakers are raising a bit of money on Kickstarter to finish the movie and recoup some costs as crowdfunding beforehand was too risky. Had this been announced yesterday I would have assumed it was a hoax.

Money Vs People

by jon

2014-04-03-Money-Vs-People

We’re back at the Huzzik Empire’s Supreme Court for another wacky ruling! Next thing you know they’ll be declaring donuts to be sentient and monkeys to be hot dogs.

They may be right about hot dogs.

You know what you should do? You should buy something from our store. Maybe a t-shirt for the warm weather?

KITCHEN BEAUTICIAN

by Amy Nadine

POST + PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

This method has been around for centuries! It’s a powerful Ayuveda technique that removes bacteria from your mouth, gums and teeth and whitens your teeth without using bleach. This is what happened to me this month: my sister told me I had to do it every morning because she read it helps with fertility (my hubby and I have been trying for three years, so I pretty much try anything now!). I did it every morning and after just a couple days noticed my teeth looked whiter but didn’t think much of it. Then two weeks later I went to the dentist for my biannual checkup and was ready to get a big lecture. My dentist was half way through the cleaning when he asked “you floss twice a day, right?” I said “I wish, I’ve been really bad about it lately and am lucky if I do it once a week.” He said my gums were so healthy, didn’t bleed at all and there was barely any tartar. He continued with his cleaning then said “you bleach your teeth, right?” To which I also told him no. He said my teeth were so white that when I walked in the room he thought I had gotten veneers! I finally told him I’ve been oil pulling. He had never heard of it but said my mouth, gums and teeth were extremely healthy and he was going to look into it. I was so excited that I actually got a good report card that I’ve been telling all of my friends and now my readers! I’ve since learned it can also clear up acne and your sinuses, prevent gingivitis and promotes heart health! Here’s your Oil Pulling 101:

TOOLS:

  • Your Favorite Oil: Coconut Oil is the best to use but Sesame Oil, Sunflower and Walnut Oil are great too. The only one I wouldn’t necessarily use is Canola Oil.
  • A Teaspoon.

STEPS:

  1. Pour the oil into the teaspoon. If you’re using Coconut Oil, scoop out a teaspoon and wait a minute for it to melt a little. If you don’t mind the consistency while it’s in solid form, you can put it in your mouth while it’s raw and let it melt in your mouth.
  2. Swish the oil all around your mouth, back and forth, from side to side, for 20 minutes. Swish vigorously so it really covers all of your teeth and gets in between them and your gums.
  3. Spit it out.
  4. Immediately swish water in your mouth to rinse it.
  5. Spit out again.
  6. Now brush your teeth.
  7. Repeat daily.

VERY IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER:

  • Be careful not to swallow any of the oil. As the oil collects all of the bacteria from your mouth, it becomes extremely toxic and could get you sick if you swallow it.
  • If you’re using coconut oil, do not spit it out into your sink. As you know, coconut oil hardens when it cools down and could clog your drain pipes. Spit it out into a trash can instead.
  • It’s most effective if you do it first thing in the morning. I keep the bottle and spoon next to my bed and do it while I’m still in bed browsing Instagram and Facebook on my phone!
  • If you’re an over-achiever, do it twice a day, first thing in the morning and the last thing before you go to bed.

If you want to read more about all the many health benefits, the best resource I’ve found is Oil Pulling Therapy by Bruce Fife.

Researchers: Rats Didn't Spread Black Death, Humans Did

by samzenpus
concertina226 (2447056) writes "Scientists studying the human remains of plague victims found during excavations for London's new Crossrail train line have concluded that humans spread the Black Death rather than rats, a fact that could rewrite history books. University of Keele scientists, working together with Crossrail's lead archaeologist Jay Carver and osteologists from the Museum of London, analyzed the bones and teeth of 25 skeletons dug up by Crossrail. They found DNA of Yersinia pestis, which is responsible for the Black Death, on the teeth of some of the victims."

What’s the big deal behind this week’s famous Physics discovery? via Jon Kaufman & Jorge Cham

Jon Kaufman (soon to be Dr. Jon Kaufman) is a member of the BICEP2 team that made the discovery described above. As one of the Ph.D. students in the project, Jon spent many months in the South Pole (there is an actual pole), recharging the liquid Helium on the telescope, for which he received a medal. It was his idea to draw this comic.

Hawaii’s forbidden ‘Stairway to Heaven’

by Arnold Chao

What began as a rickety wood pathway to install antenna cables over a cliff in 1942 has become a hiker’s enigma often called the “Stairway to Heaven.”

World War II motivated the U.S. military to build a radio transceiver station atop Hawaii’s Puʻukeahiakahoe mountain. The station sent low-frequency signals to communicate with submarines navigating around Japan. The Haiku Stairs (Haʻikū means “sharp break” in Hawaiian) offers a steep 2,500-foot ascent on Oahu that reaches the now abandoned station. Despite receiving an $875,000 metal renovation in 2003, according to to-hawaii.com, the trail is forbidden to many visitors wanting to endure the series of steps. The prohibition, nevertheless, hasn’t held back everyone from the climb and arriving at its wonderful island landscape views.

Stairway to Heaven

Stairway to Heaven

Haiku Stairs

We asked the Friends of Haiku Stairs (FHS) volunteer organization to get the inside scoop on the popular attraction:

What’s the current status and future of the Haiku Stairs?

FHS: Climbing on the stairs is illegal without consent from the owners — there are several, and they asked us not to share all of their names. The Friends of Haiku Stairs have a working agreement with all of the owners and are trying to obtain the newly required $1 million insurance policy that one of the owners is requiring us to have before we can even access them again, and that is only for maintenance and not recreation.

There is a continued movement to demolish the stairs altogether that is being fueled by people accessing them illegally. We believe there’s a better solution: Open the stairs to allow people to climb in safe conditions and that will alleviate the trespassing. To get there, we need political will.

Is it safe to climb the stairs?

FHS: The stairs are safe to climb if conditions are favorable, with caution, and in the daylight. People continue to access them illegally through the neighborhoods; or worse, they try to access them from the back side which is a treacherous, dangerous hike. The result is a surge in emergency calls and a strain on efforts from police and rescue teams.
