Insect of the Day: Freaky, Carnivorous Glow Worm Discovered in Peru

Nature photographer Jeff Cremer was working in the jungles of Tambopata, Peru a few years ago, when he uncovered several dozen worms in the soil glowing a strange green color.
Local entomologists had never seen anything like it before in the region but came to the conclusion that the animal is possibly the larvae of an unknown species of click beetle. He initially posted pictures of his findings on Reddit to help solve the mystery.
The .5-inch long worms have since been determined to be carnivorous as well, and use the glowing light to attract their prey into their terrifying jaws before chowing down.
Entomologist Aaron Pomerantz recently took a trip down to Peru with Cremer to investigate further, which you can watch in the video above.

Bigger Picture: Famous Album Covers Extended To Reveal Background Action

the-bigger-picture-famous-album-cover-art-aptitude-6

Who needs to buy an album these days? All it takes is a few clicks on your phone or computer and you can download all of your music via iTunes, and a number of other platforms, and it only takes seconds.

Downloading might be easier, and friendlier to the environment, but as a result CDs are becoming less and less popular. Just like tape decks went extinct in newer model vehicles, one day so too will CD players. The biggest issue with this revelation is that the cover art associated with album covers is taking a back seat. This is what inspired web design company Aptitude to create a fun series involving old album covers.

Aptitude has actually expanded popular album covers, using their creativity to show what these pictures might look like if they were not cropped at all. Of course it’s all just for fun, but in some cases the real album artwork isn’t as fitting as the recreated version!

Enjoy these ‘un-cropped’ famous album covers generated by Aptitude. as an attempt to bring back the love for album art, and simply make you laugh!

Michael Jackson “Off The Wall” 1979

While Aptitude wanted to show off their fun side with these album cover recreations, they also tried to keep them somewhat related to the actual time period the album was produced during. Take this Michael Jackson cover for instance, with talk about the future, a smoking monkey and Jackson actually sporting “dress” shorts.

In an interview with Bored Panda Aptitude says, “We brain storm content ideas regularly and wanted to come up with something a vast majority of people could enjoy/relate to.”

Bruce Springsteen “Born in the U.S.A.” 1984

You can’t be born in the USA without loving Fat Boy Burgers, but Americans know good and well what happens when you eat too many of those…

Blur “Parklife” 1994

Aptitude explains that people buy the digital copy out of convenience. Short cuts are applied to anything that is ‘convenient,’ thus eliminating the popularity of album covers. Musicians use these covers to convey a deeper message about themselves and their music, something no one wants to lose all together.

The Beatles “Abbey Road” 1969

I especially love the road sign that reads “CAUTION Beetles Crossing.”

Justin Bieber “My World” 2010

When Justin Bieber first hit the scene with Usher at his side, he was a fresh-faced adorable boy without any serious crime record. His strawberry lips and infamous hair rocked the cover of his 2010 album, but what was really going on behind the scenes in Justin’s world? I think this edited album cover nails it!

Adele “19” 2008

Adele’s incredible voice might not spark thoughts of zombies, but it was just around 2008 when the whole zombie scene took off, causing many to lose their minds due to zombie fever.

Remember how much fun it was to purchase a new CD? To hold the physical copy in your hands, check out the photos included in the multi-page cover spread and read the lyrics straight off the paper.  The album art itself is something like a book cover, either drawing people in or turning them off. Plus, album art tells you more about the artist behind the music, in fact there are certain CD’s just as easily identified by their cover art as the music tucked away inside.

Take the “Nevermind” CD by Nirvana, who doesn’t remember seeing this naked baby in a Target or Circuit City (RIP) store!?

Nirvana “Nevermind” 1991

The album covers have become so popular the team at Aptitude is already thinking of adding more to the collection. They may even expand into movie and video game covers, other genres that are slowly being taken hostage by download.

Stunning Portraits By Bernard Pras Can Only Be Seen From The Right Angle

by Audra

French artist Bernard Pras is widely known for his unbelievable found-object installations. In anamorphic artworks like these, he hides his images in piles of what seems to be plain junk. They can only be seen through a particular device or just from a right angle.

In order to create the anamorphic effect, the artist carefully plans the whole installation and places seemingly random objects, selecting them by color and size so that they would resemble a famous portrait or image from a single perspective. Pras uses plastic waste, old pills, boxes, bags, packs, dolls, toys, musical instruments, household objects, and pretty much anything that seems right for the color and texture he needs. The results are simply jaw-dropping!

Space Noir

by Geoff Manaugh
[Image: The International Space Station at night, photographed by astronaut Alexander Gerst, courtesy of the ESA].

The European Space Agency recently released a group of photos taken by astronaut Alexander Gerst showing the International Space Station at night. The only real contextual information provided is that "the six astronauts on the weightless research centre live by GMT, and generally sleep at the same time."

[Image: Photo by Alexander Gerst, courtesy of the ESA].

Gerst—so close to Geist!—thus took advantage of the downtime to produce some images that make the ISS look uninhabited, a dead mansion rolling through space.

[Image: Photo by Alexander Gerst, courtesy of the ESA].

This is perhaps what it would look like to arrive somewhere in the middle of night, hoping to say hello to your comrades, only to find that you've actually boarded the Mary Celeste.

[Image: Photo by Alexander Gerst, courtesy of the ESA].

The dimly lit corridors of this house of sleeping astronauts take on the atmosphere of film noir, as if this is secretly a crime scene, still flickering with the last lights of its drained batteries, and these are the first photos to be taken upon arrival.

[Image: Photo by Alexander Gerst, courtesy of the ESA].

Small details take on narrative suspense. Why was that cupboard door left open, its contents bare for all to see? And are those objects messily scattered about, as if a struggle has taken place, or is this just the normal state of things in zero-g?

Where is everyone? Imagine performing forensic crime-scene analysis in the absence of gravity, three-dimensionally reconstructing a moment of violence by tracking objects back along all of their possible trajectories; you would need holographic models of every legally admissible collision and variation.

[Images: Photos by astronaut Alexander Gerst, courtesy of the ESA].

In any case, to browse more of astronaut Gerst's collection, you can basically start at this image and click backward through the rest; one or two, unfortunately, feature other astronauts drifting around, perhaps staring down at the earth through the red eyes of insomnia, which ruins the illusion of this being a ruin, but the photos are still worth a glimpse.

[Image: Photo by Alexander Gerst, courtesy of the ESA].

Finally, proving that international scientific organizations have an active sense of humor, the photos were actually released on Halloween.

Bruce Riley’s Resin Paintings Look Like Psychedelic X-Rays

Bruce Riley - Painting

Like stunning x-rays from an alien world, Bruce Riley‘s resin paintings seem to be lit from within. His playful shapes and psychedelic colors blossom in suspended animation, humming with as much electrical energy as any other multicellular organism.

Riley describes his process as intuitive and organic, saying, “I’m not really trying to define any ideas, I’m just letting it flow.” Watching him work is certainly hypnotizing as fluorescent greens and ozone blues blossom and blend into each other. The paintings can be appreciated from afar as well as up close, each brimming with meditative detail.
“You’re always investigating,” Riley says of his process. “It’s not about an end result. [You're] trying to use techniques that you remember but also looking for things you’ve never seen before.”

Part of the beauty of Riley’s work is that it can be appreciated on various levels. Open to interpretation, one could call it the secret life of lava lamps . It could also be described with a narrative, a foray into extraterrestrial forensics. Or you could just take it as it is: the stream of conscious of a man who certainly knows his way around a paint brush. (via This Is Colossal)
