With my only knowledge of the concept of "antifragile" being the slideshow I just read, my initial assessment is yes, Bitcoin is antifragile.

Antifragile benefits from randomness and gains from disorder.

Randomness in Bitcoin appears in the random generation of keys and in the whims of its users' spending habits. No one person controls the system, and a transaction may or may not get processed based on connectivity and fees. There is an incentive to connect to as many nodes as possible in order to broadcast a transaction.

In Bitcoin, anyone is allowed to participate, because no one is prohibited. Participation may be cost-prohibitive now, but as time goes on, it won't be.

There are stressors on the Bitcoin ecosystem: block chain dust, nodes disappearing, nodes flooding transactions, etc. None are as close of a match as sudden jumps in hashrate and the subsequent adjustment to difficulty. Too much of a jump, and the "body" breaks: someone gets a 51% attack going. But, enough of a push and the difficulty increases, making it harder to break that 51%. Also, if the body hasn't been used enough - there hasn't been a high enough hash rate to produce the expected number of blocks - the difficulty lowers in order to allow more blocks to be found.

Thus, the Bitcoin system adjusts to its environment. Moreover, it does so in a chaotic way: there are rules set in the protocol, but those rules can be change if a majority of participants in the system agree to change the rules and agree on a new set of rules. In the absence of Internet, Bitcoin transactions can propagate through sneakernet or through even basic text format printable on paper.

Moreover, given the randomness of human economic behavior and the external environment which Bitcoin uses to propagate, various edges and remote notes of the network graph may have sudden activity that the rest of the network doesn't see. The rest of the network has to deal with that activity or risk invalidating itself.

Slide 40 is one where Bitcoin really is antifragile:

Complex systems resist top-down design, and oftentimes even top-down interference. This is because these systems are simply too complex to be controlled from the outside.

Bitcoin is resistant to top-down design now because of the number of people using it and processing its transactions. Gavin Andresen could not suddenly make a change, because 51% of the network hashrate would have to agree with his change. No one can interfere, only vote to support or not support a given transaction by directing their miners to include or not to include a certain kind of transaction in the blocks they produce. Moreover, Bitcoin cannot be controlled by anyone except participants in its ecosystem (not matter what governments might think or try to do!).

All participants in Bitcoin have a skin in the game. By processing transactions, they in turn process their own transactions as well as the transactions of their peers. If they can get 51% of the miners to act a certain way, then that's the way the economy goes.

So, yes, I believe that, based on this slideshow, Bitcoin is antifragile.

O Brasil tem uma dívida de gratidão com o governador Geraldo Alckmin. Se ele não tivesse soltado a tropa de choque em cima dos manifestantes que protestavam em São Paulo contra o aumento do preço das passagens, é possível que o maior movimento social do país jamais tivesse chegado às ruas. A onda de indignação começou a se formar assim que as primeiras fotos e vídeos das agressões da polícia circularam pela internet; ela se transformou em tsunami quando, horas depois, o governador veio a público defender a polícia e atacar os manifestantes. Como assim? Quer dizer que o cidadão, que paga a conta, ainda tem que aguentar todos os desaforos do governo caladinho, fechado em casa?! É isso?!

Para quem estava nas redes sociais, o que aconteceu a partir daí rolou como um filminho. Subitamente, todos os outros assuntos retrocederam, como fez a maré na Ásia, e as timelines foram tomadas pela insatisfação geral. No sábado, o Twitter e o Facebook mal aguentavam o peso da comoção. Algo de grande e de inesperado estava se formando. No dia seguinte, tentei definir o que estava sentindo:

” Estou maravilhada com o que está acontecendo no país. Há quem se queixe que a população não se manifestou em relação ao mensalão, à PEC 37, à roubalheira em geral e à da Copa em particular, e que o preço da passagem seria uma causa “menor”; mas a gente nunca sabe qual é a gota d’água, qual é o estopim que faz com que todo mundo tenha vontade de gritar junto. O que no começo era só um protesto contra 20 centavos virou o protesto que todos queríamos, contra todas as desfeitas que nos vêm sendo feitas de todos os lados, por todos os partidos, por todos os poderes.

É um protesto que, pelo menos à primeira vista, “pegou”.

Ao longo dos últimos anos, fui chamada para N manifestações diferentes, muitas das quais coincidiam com a minha opinião. Nenhuma, porém, tinha jeito de dar liga. Faltava sempre alguma coisa que não sei definir — e que talvez fosse até a polícia na rua, quem sabe? Faltava a empolgação geral, o arrepio na espinha, a massa crítica.

Agora é diferente.

Pela primeira vez em muitos anos — mais especificamente, desde o impeachment do Collor — dá para sentir uma tensão no ar, um alento, o brilho de uma esperança coletiva que não discrimina sexo, idade, classe social.

As manifestações da semana que vem podem não dar em nada. A ideia dos panos brancos nas janelas pode — sem trocadilho — passar em branco. É possível até que o momento de indignação geral já tenha passado quando a quinta-feira chegar e for a nossa vez de, aqui no Rio, ir às ruas (eu estava mal informada, não sabia que já tínhamos protesto marcado para a segunda-feira). Penso muito nisso, para não dar corda demais às minhas expectativas e não me amargurar se nada acontecer.

Mas também pode ser que estejamos diante de um grande momento. Que não será apenas um protesto contra o aumento das passagens, mas uma formidável manifestação de cidadania — algo de que nos orgulharemos no futuro, e que contaremos, cheios de saudades, aos nossos filhos e netos.”

Até agora, 2h12 de quarta-feira, não tenho motivo para amargura; ao contrário, estou feliz, orgulhosa do meu país e da minha cidade. Quem pede foco aos manifestantes ainda não entendeu que, antes de qualquer coisa, este é um movimento pela cidadania, um movimento que diz ao poder canalha que temos que ele não nos representa.

“O povo unido protesta sem partido”, gritava a moçada em Porto Alegre. Eles me representam.

A hashtag #ForaDilma disparou para o primeiro lugar nos TTs (trending topics) do Twitter na terça-feira à noite, logo após a burocrática e irrelevante declaração da presidente sobre as manifestações. Não tenho nenhuma simpatia por ela, muito antes pelo contrário, mas acho que definitivamente não é por aí — mesmo porque as alternativas para substituí-la, ao menos no momento, são Michel Temer e Renan Calheiros.

A meu ver, as manifestações não são contra A, B ou C, mas contra a classe política como um todo. Cansamos de ver o nosso dinheiro indo para o lixo, cansamos de ver Brasília transformada num balcão de negócios, cansamos da roubalheira e do deboche dos nossos governantes. Todos eles. De todos os partidos, de todos os poderes e de todas as esferas.

“O povo acordou, o povo decidiu, ou para a roubalheira ou paramos o Brasil”, entoavam os manifestantes em Juiz de Fora. Eles me representam.

Justo no meio disso tudo, a presidente — a “presidenta”, a chefona, a manda-chuva, a über-faxineira, a mulher que só fala aos gritos com os seus comandados — deixou Brasília para ir a uma consulta urgente em São Paulo… com o seu marqueteiro!

Putz. Essa não entendeu nada mesmo. E não, ela não me representa.

Há pouco tempo, vi uma foto da Avenida Rio Branco muito parecida com a que vimos no dia da manifestação. Era a foto do desfile do Bola Preta no carnaval, lembram? A diferença é que naquela foto, segundo a polícia, havia um milhão de pessoas. Eu não sei como essas contas são feitas, mas eu gostaria muito que alguém me explicasse por que a avenida cheia no carnaval tem um milhão de pessoas, e a avenida cheia na manifestação tem cem mil. Aceito desenhos.

With a stroke of brilliance that deserves to be chronicled in some sort of pop culture digest, one Game of Thrones fan decided to quiz his father — who regularly watches the show with him — thirty minutes after the season three finale ended with pictures of all the different characters to see how many his dad could name. He then of course made images and shared the fun with his buddies on r/GameOfThrones.

The results are — of course — glorious, and vary from nailing Jon Snow and Gilly to re-christening Bran Stark as James Stark and somehow offering up incorrect two syllable non-words for Hodor. Seriously, he missed Hodor. Twice!

The whole thing is just the perfect combination of zeitgeist meets massive confusing ensemble meets dad brain meets internet good times. The question marks are a nice touch as well. I thought.
