1 in 5 millennials thinks vaccines cause autism

by German Lopez

Americans ages 18 to 29 are more likely to oppose mandatory childhood vaccination and say vaccines can cause autism, according to a new survey.

A survey of 1,000 US adults by YouGov, conducted between January 26 and January 28, found 21 percent of young adults believe the long-debunked idea that vaccines cause autism, while just 13 percent of all US adults agree.

(YouGov)

The empirical research on this issue is clear: there is no connection between vaccines and autism. The Lancet, a British medical journal, in 2010 retracted a high-profile study from 1998 that falsely claimed to find a link between vaccines and autism, discrediting the one major piece of evidence vaccine skeptics cited in the past.

The YouGov survey also found 57 percent of Americans support mandatory childhood vaccinations, while 32 percent say parents should decide. Younger adults were much more likely to say childhood vaccination should be optional.

Many schools and states require vaccination to support what's known as herd or community immunity, a coverage threshold that effectively prevents an illness from spreading. Vaccinated people essentially act as barriers to outbreaks, since diseases can't pass through them and infect other people. This barrier helps protect some of the most vulnerable populations: infants under 12 months of age, who can't get vaccinated and are more susceptible to infection, and the elderly, who have a higher risk of death if they contract these illnesses.

Vox's Dylan Matthews explains why it's so important to vaccinate

But not too much of a difference.

Rumor: Photographs show a series of frighteningly emaciated models.

British thieves stole DVDs from a supermarket by mailing them home

Before we start, we know that crime is wrong and that theft is a serious issue. That said, the lengths some people will go to steal a few DVDs is pretty entertaining. Thieves at a Walmart-owned ASDA supermarket in Cheshire, England managed to evade s...

Yeah, I'm not much for most sports on TV.

My hobby: Pretending to miss the sarcasm when people show off their lack of interest in football by talking about 'sportsball' and acting excited to find someone else who's interested, then acting confused when they try to clarify.

iTunes for Mac gets its own Notification Center widget

by Mariella Moon
Cooper Griggs

I don't use the notification center and find it annoying actually. Works great on the iPhone and iPad, but just feels like it gets in the way on a desktop or laptop screen.

The latest iTunes is now available for download, and while it won't clothe your old application in a newer, fancier interface, it does come with a convenient new feature. To be exact, it adds an iTunes widget right within the notification center that...

Amazon put $1.3 billion into Prime Instant Video last year

by Richard Lawler

It's a good deal for consumers with free shipping on a lot of their products and unlimited viewing of Prime media (TV and moveis).

Amazon may have surprised Wall Street by how much sales went up in the fourth quarter of last year ($29.3 billion, with a profit of $214 million), but for customers its Prime service is the big deal. Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos said Prime membership i...
