Artist Jane Long Digitally Manipulates Black and White WWI-Era Photos Into Colorful Works of Fantasy
Cooper GriggsThese are AMAZING!
All images provided by Jane Long Photography
Australian artist Jane Long transforms cracked and faded black and white photographs into colorful works of fantasy, giving the subjects a new, and entirely surreal context. The images she uses for her series, Dancing with Costica, were captured over a half century ago by Costică Acsinte a Romanian war photographer who documented WWI.
The glass-plate photographs by Costica capture the straight faces and intense eyes of the subjects taken long before smiling was common in images. “I wanted to change the context of the images,” says Long. “Photographic practices at the time meant people rarely smiled in photos but that doesn’t mean they didn’t laugh and love. I wanted to introduce that to the images.”
By altering the images Long imagines the subjects as characters, letting the audience decide whether they are bad or good. These colorful transformations have been a source of controversy as some viewers have felt it improper to alter images of those she doesn’t know. In response to these accusations the artist stands by her work and explains, “I wanted people to see these figures as real people, more than just an old photograph. Adding colour completely changes our perception of images.”
Long’s series Dancing with Costica will be exhibited from August 22nd to September 20th as part of the Ballarat International Photo Biennale. You can see more work by Long on her Facebook page here. (via My Modern Met)

Target Loved the Guy Who Trolled Its Haters, Judging by This Genius Facebook Post
Cooper Griggsvia GN
How did Target really feel about Mike Melgaard posing as a Target customer service rep on Facebook and caustically replying to angry messages left by haters opposed to Target's gender-neutral product labeling?
The retailer issued a pretty dry statement after AdFreak broke the story yesterday. ("Clearly this individual was not speaking on behalf of Target," it said.) But behind the scenes, the brand was apparently loving it—at least judging by this Facebook photo that Target posted on Thursday evening.
The photo showed a couple of toy trolls. The caption read: "Remember when Trolls were the kings of the world? Woo hoo! They're back and only at Target stores."
Not only was this a clear reference to Melgaard's antics, but Melgaard himself responded in the comments—under his own profile—writing, "Target. Seriously. You are AWESOME." (With almost 2,500 likes, that is the most-liked comment on the photo.)
Target didn't reply to Melgaard's comment (it probably decided it has to keep its distance, officially). But it did obliquely refer to his trolling in a reply to the second most-liked comment on the thread:
Following Melgaard's expert trolling, Target's post is pretty devious as well. And it confirms Melgaard's earlier hunch that, yes, Target's PR people are smart enough to know that a guy like Melgaard is their friend, not their enemy.
Terra Flamma: Stunning Long-Exposure Photographs of California Wildfires by Stuart Palley

The news of deadly wildfires ravaging California has been as awe-inspiring as it is terrifying. Great swaths of forests, mountains, fields, and entire neighborhoods can be incinerated in moments leaving nothing unscathed. For the last few years, Los Angeles-based photographer Stuart Palley has been shooting these fires as they rage across Southern California as part of a series he calls Terra Flamma.
More than just capturing flames or firefighters, Palley focuses instead on the entire landscape surrounding each event. By utilizing long exposure techniques he incorporates trails of sparks, the lights of firefighting aircraft, and even the stars above to create images that speak more to the strange beauty of wildfires than simple editorial documentation.
Though Palley often jumps at the opportunity to photograph a fire at a moment’s notice, he’s also well prepared. He takes a number of precautions including completion of the US Forestry Service’s “Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior” to better ensure his safety.

Stephen Colbert pens hilarious and important feminist op-ed
Who runs the world? If Stephen Colbert could have his way: women. In an op-ed for Glamour magazine, the future Late Show host pushes for equal rights and treatment of women in the workplace and the media, all while mixing in a healthy dose of humor. But despite the hilarious jokes, his extended quotes make some incredibly crucial points.

Astronauts on the International Space Station Sample Their First Taste of Space-Grown Lettuce
Cooper Griggsvia Christopher Lantz
Astronauts on board the International Space Station have sampled their first taste of space-grown “Outredgeous” red romaine lettuce grown in the station’s Veggie hardware validation test (Veg-01). This was the first time American astronauts have eaten space-grown vegetables, which have only been recently grown, analyzed, and deemed safe to eat.
The astronauts first cleaned the lettuce with a citric acid-based wipe to ensure the lettuce was safe to eat, and ate half their lettuce crop while the other half will be sent back to Earth for further study.
The technology used to grow the lettuce is important for the future of long-term space travel, and could one day be used to help colonize Mars. It also has applications here on Earth where similar technology can help grow food in harsh climates.
