You Light Up My Thighs / You Give Me Hope to Carry On

by Lisa Marcus

In what no one would be shocked to see as the next fashion trend in Japan, the Hikaru Skirt (which translates to "Shining Skirt") is a mini designed to illuminate the thighs of anyone c̶e̶r̶t̶i̶f̶i̶a̶b̶l̶y̶ ̶i̶n̶s̶a̶n̶e̶ brave enough to wear it.

The brainchild of Japanese designer Kiyoyuki Amano, the skirt is lit from underneath with LED lights equipped with gyro sensors, so that the light colors and patterns change with the movement of the model.

Amano said that he was simply experimenting with lights on skirts when he discovered that they shone a spotlight on the wearer's thighs, which he found enlightening. Eureka! Talk about a light bulb moment! Amano is apparently so enthusiastic about the Hikaru — which has yet to be mass produced — that he's started a Tumblr with the skirt (and thighs) in a starring role. Don't miss the thighlights on said Tumblr.

The Crookie: Half Croissant, Half Cookie

by John Farrier

We've seen a previous execution of this idea that involved baking a whole Oreo inside a croissant. Nick Chipman of Dude Foods offers a version that is even simpler and more promising. He took premade chocolate chip cookie dough and cut it into triangles matching the size of canned croissant dough triangles. He wrapped one around the other, then baked them together. He says that it was both flaky and chocolatey, which is exactly what we're looking for.

Build a steampunk clock with alarm

by Janet Cloninger

diy-nixie-tube-clock-kit

We’ve told you about these ultra-cool steampunk clocks with Nixie tubes displays.  Nixie tubes are “the LEDs of yesteryear” that used to be used for displays on scientific equipment, voltmeters, counters, and control panels.  They’re no longer in production, but ThinkGeek found some limited-edition kits that let you build your own clock with an alarm function and that can even tick, if you like.  The clocks can be set to 12/24 hour display, and you can set time zone and daylight savings time settings.  The base has steel hardware and blue LED accent lights.  The clock is microprocessor-controlled (comes with a microUSB cable), and it can even send IR data packets to another clock.  ThinkGeek also says this Nixie clock “can be used to create your own Divergence Meter straight out of Steins;Gate if you can figure out what algorithm determines the Divergence Value of the current world line in relation to the absolute world line of 0% and plug that in.”  They warn that this kit has a lot of pieces and requires intermediate-to-advanced skill levels.  The DIY Nixie Tube Clock Kit is $199.99 from ThinkGeek.

A bronze bull head fountain is suddenly transformed into a minotaur. A decrepit corner of an alley becomes a holding pen for ostriches. If any of these odd happenings sound familiar to you, you’re probably living in Paris and have just witnessed the work of French artist Charles Leval (previously). Going by the name Levalet, the artist injects humor into the streets of Paris by gluing animal and human-shaped pasteups onto walls. A lot of thought goes into location too as each piece usually interacts with its environment in one way or another.

Levalet has been updating his site and facebook page with new work he’s created so far in 2015. When not on the streets, Levalet can be found in a classroom (he teaches art) and in a gallery (he held an exhibition late last year at Galerie Geraldine Zberro). “I was looking for places and contexts to operate,” says Levalet, referring to his prime medium: the wall. “The street became a creative space I had to invade.” (via StreetArtNews)

Unsettling Ceramic Tableware by Ronit Baranga Incorporates Realistic Mouths and Fingers

Israeli ceramicist Ronit Baranga‘s “body of work” is unsettling, to say the least. Sculpted from clay, realistic fingers emerge from plates while mouths lurk inside cups. The gnarled fingers and lips seem poised for action. We would most certainly hesitate before using any of these for fear of being bitten.

The mouth is an interesting element for ceramic tableware as its main purpose, at least conventionally, has been to carry food and drink until it reaches the mouth. “I chose to deal with ‘mouth’ as a metaphoric connotation to a border gate,” said Baranga in an interview late last year. “A border between the inner body and the external environment surrounding it.”

Ronit Baranga’s curious works, which blur the border between living and still, were most recently part of the two group exhibitions at Bet-Binyamini Contemporary Ceramics Center in Tel-Aviv. (via I Need A Guide)

"A scorpion's anus is at the end of its tail.

"A scorpion's anus is at the end of its tail. If the tail breaks off, the scorpion can never poo again." – Ed Yong, describing a newly documented case of autotomy (i.e. self-amputation) in scorpions. If talk of collateral anus amputation doesn't make you want to read about scorpion tails, what the hell are you even doing on the Internet?

A Simple Way to Make Doughnut-Waffle Hybrid Krispy Kreme Waffles

by Rebecca Escamilla

Krispy Kreme Waffles

Amy Erickson of Oh Bite It came up with an incredibly simple way to unite doughnuts and waffles into a stack of a sweet, sweet excess in her recipe for Krisy Kreme waffles. The waffles are made by gently placing glazed doughnuts from popular doughnut chain Krispy Kreme in a standard waffle iron, removing them when warm and toasted, then topping with butter and syrup.

The stack of four pictured above packs a whopping 760 calories according to Krispy Kreme’s nutritional data–or a little over 800 calories when adding a pat of butter and a tablespoon of maple syrup. For more efficient doughnut-waffle hybrids, the syrup step can be skipped by swapping Krispy Kreme maple-glazed doughnuts for the plain-glazed variety.
