A Dutch Designer Has Created An Underground Fridge That Does Not Use Electricity

by dmitry

1

Dutch designer Floris Schoonderbeek, has created the Ground Fridge, an underground cool storage solution, for Dutch brand Weltevree.

2

Modern houses are often built without a basement while a lot of people nowadays feel the need for one: they’re focused on healthy food and, for example, grow their own food or buy in bulk at the local organic farmer.

3

The Ground Fridge is a basement as a product. An innovative version of the traditional root cellar, for the new cosmopolitan with its own vegetable garden and a modern self-sufficient existence.

4

The Ground Fridge makes use of the insulating effect of the ground and the cooling effect of the groundwater.

5

The temperature in the fridge remains stable throughout the year between 10 and 12° C: the ideal temperature for the storage of, for example, fruit, vegetables, wine and cheese.

6

The spherical Ground Fridge is buried and covered with the excavated earth. This layer of soil is about one meter thick and insulating so the temperature inside the fridge barely varies. There’s no permit required to place the Ground Fridge, and no soil to be disposed.

7

The Ground Fridge is equipped with wooden shelves for storage.

Drug with rage-inducing >5,000% price-hike now has $1/pill competitor

by Beth Mole

Turing Pharmaceuticals, the company that last month raised the price of the decades-old drug Daraprim from $13.50 a pill to $750, now has a competitor.

Imprimis Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a specialty pharmaceutical company based in San Diego, announced today that it has made an alternative to Daraprim that costs about a buck a pill—or $99 for a 100-pill supply.

“While we respect Turing's right to charge patients and insurance companies whatever it believes is appropriate, there may be more cost-effective compounded options for medications, such as Daraprim,” Mark L. Baum, CEO of Imprimis, said in a news release.

Toronto International Film Festival: Charlie Kaufman returns with a stop-motion triumph

by A.A. Dowd
Tadeu

Also created by Starburns

It’s been six long years since Charlie Kaufman unleashed his wild imagination on a movie screen, and the world has been a little less creative, a little less down-the-rabbit-hole exhilarating in his absence. Waiting for the mad screenwriter to resurface, you had to wonder if his brilliantly dispiriting directorial debut, Synecdoche, New York, was the swan song it felt like—a last word from an artist who had taken his worries, fears, and hang-ups about as far as he could take them, dramatically speaking. But the anxiety well hasn’t run dry. Kaufman taps it anew with Anomalisa (Grade: A-), the Being John Malkovich mastermind’s first foray into animation. The film premiered at Telluride a couple of weeks ago, made another pit stop at Venice (where it just won the Grand Jury Prize), and is now wowing audiences in Toronto, including the mostly receptive packed house I nestled ...

I want one of this for Brazil, with "politicians salaries" and "corruption" explicit in it too.

We all have different opinions on how our tax dollars are spent, and in forming those opinions, it helps to know exactly where they are being spent. This interactive tool from the White House makes it easy to see where your tax dollars are proposed to go in 2016.

Quantum Theory Experiment Said to Prove "Spooky" Interactions

by samzenpus
universe520 writes: Albert Einstein was troubled by how two particles can communicate with each other even if they are on opposite sides of the galaxy. Today researchers in the Netherlands have closed the final two loopholes in how quantum entanglement works. The Times reports: "The new experiment, conducted by a group led by Ronald Hanson, a physicist at the Dutch university’s Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, and joined by scientists from Spain and England, is the strongest evidence yet to support the most fundamental claims of the theory of quantum mechanics about the existence of an odd world formed by a fabric of subatomic particles, where matter does not take form until it is observed and time runs backward as well as forward."

Humorous Street Signs and Other Contextual Street Art Interventions by Michael Pederson

by Christopher Jobson

marquez-1

Across the urban cityscape of Sydney, in parks, suburban streets, and industrial zones, you’re likely to encounter a plethora of signs and placards while going about your day: warnings, traffic regulations, helpful guides, and city services. But, look closer, and you might find an intervention by artist Michael Pederson who delights in creating humorous and thoughtful signs that blend into the city backdrop. Pederson makes use of pre-existing elements like park benches or abandoned furniture to share messages meant to snap a viewer out of their daily routine and see the world from a more contemplative or even childlike perspective, if only for a moment. You can see more of his installations dating back to 2012 on his Tumblr. (via Lustik, Junk Culture)

Being Poor Is Too Expensive

by Eric Ravenscraft

Some think that being poor is simple. You don’t have enough money to buy a lot of stuff, so you’re forced to buy less stuff. But that’s not really how it works. When you’re broke, you can’t do all the little things that will improve your budget over the long run. It actually costs more to be poor.

Increasingly, prep football talent is being consolidated on powerful public, private, parochial, charter and magnet school teams.
