The legendary Loukanikos, known for his fearless interventions during clashes with riot police in Athens between 2010-’12, has died at the age of 10.
Louki had retired from rioting in 2012 following a spell of ill-health. He was taken in by a loving family in whose presence he passed away today. Rest in peace, canine comrade!

“The ones that were awake just hopped around and seemed to be begging the keeper for carrots (the curious little guy had to hop around a few Echidna to make sure he stayed close to people.) I would have scooped him up and Snorgled him if our guide hadn’t been watching us like a hawk. He told us that he could stop our private tour if we touched a Koala, so I wasn’t going to step too far out of line, even with massive temptation. It took self-control of epic proportions.”

This is a great video of polyphonic overtone singing by Anna-Maria Hefele, where she precisely demonstrates the almost inhuman ability to create a harmony of two notes at a time using a single breath. Overtone singing is the same technique used by Tuvan (or Mongolian) throat singers of which there are several other great videos to watch on YouTube. Beautiful Chemistry is a new collaboration between Tsinghua University Press and University of Science and Technology of China that seeks to make chemistry more accessible and interesting to the general public. Their first project was the creation of several short films that utilize a 4K UltraHD camera to capture a variety of striking chemical reactions without the usual clutter of test tubes, beakers or lab equipment. I definitely would have paid a bit more attention in chemistry class if we’d had the opportunity to watch some of these. Filmed and edited by Yan Liang.

All my life using Adobe Illustrator and it's only now when I learn how it draws vector curves—technically called Bézier curves. If you are an illustrator, you will love this. If you are not, it's fascinating anyway. In fact, it is one of the most interesting videos I've seen this year.
