by Harry

Details: The Popcorn Monsoon by Jolene Carlier is a hot air popper with a butter coloured base and a tap-shaped transparent chute that directs popped corn into a bowl beside it.

“Like any other functional product it had to be conceptualised and constructively thought through.” says designer Carlier.

“Most popcorn machines are very dull though the simple process of making popcorn is exciting. Thats what this machine enlarges, its an experience for both children and adults.”

Car Crushed by Falling Safe

by Miss Cellania

Looks like Wile E. Coyote has been up to his old tricks again! Who else would drop a vintage safe from some height right onto a parked car? You’d be forgiven if you thought this must be an art installation, and you’d be right, too. It’s a promotional gimmick on the streets of Limerick, Ireland, for Grandmother’s Giant Journey, a performance that is part of the Giant Saga by the French art company Royal de Luxe (previously at Neatorama). Grandmother will arrive in Limerick September 5th to stay through the 7th. Well, according to the legend, she will actually fall from the sky, but I wouldn't worry about any cars being crushed -at least none accidentally. -via reddit

Chinese 2400-year-old pot of soup found in a tomb near the ancient capital of Xian. The soup was made of

dog.

Archaeologists have analyzed the bones from the 2400-year-old pot of soup found in a tomb near the ancient capital of Xian, and despite how painfully stereotypical this is, it turns out those bones belonged to a dog. A puppy, no less.

There were 37 bones found in the bronze vessel from the Warring States Period (475 – 221 BC), and another bronze container held the remains of what appears to be wine. The food and drink were offerings made to the deceased and his ancestors by his surviving family.

Shylights: Beautiful Unfolding Kinetic Lights That Bloom like Flowers

by Christopher Jobson

Several types of flowers are known to open and close for reasons of defense or energy conservation. This evolutionary mechanism, called nyctinasty, inspired Studio DRIFT to design the Shylight, a kinetic light fixture that opens dramatically during a 30 foot (9 meter) fall. The motion mimics the same action of a blooming flower or the billowing of a parachute. A collection of Shylights were just permanently installed at Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and you can see them in action in the video above. (via Prosthetic Knowledge)

The Apple Watch can’t do what these sub $20 watches can do

by Julie Strietelmeier

brando-watchlighters

If you have been bummed about the fact that the Apple Watch won’t have all the cool features and sensors that were originally promised, here are two watches that I guarantee will turn heads when you use them. These watches have built in lighters. Yes, I know it sounds a bit scary to have a flame throwing watch on your wrist, but you shouldn’t let a little fear stop you, right? The watches are available in two versions. One with an actual butane gas lighter and another one with a USB rechargeable heated coil. But watches even tell time. Bonus! The Butane version is $14 and the USB rechargeable version is $18. Visit Brando for more info.
