Spun Glass Caterpillar: A Real Life Crystal Creature

Habitat: found from New York to Florida and west to Colorado and Texas
Status: No Conservation Concerns

No, this isn’t a Swarovski crystal creation, but it very well could be! Instead, it’s a Spun Glass Caterpillar (Isochaetes beutenmuelleri) that has dozens of glittering, almost frosty-looking, spines radiating from its body. Don’t be tempted by its beautiful crystalline gaze, though. Those puppies do sting. You’ll want to look, but definitely don’t touch!

Reminds me of when your parents took you to an antique shop when you were little and you were told DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING. Then, you proceeded to secretly touch everything, especially the glass stuff. One time, I ended up breaking something – that was a more of a sting for my parents than for me, though.

If you look closely at the photo above, you’ll notice that you can see right through this creature! That dark green stripe running down the length of its body is actually its stomach.

Ultimately, it’s strange how these truly incredible spun glass caterpillars can transform into such plain Jane adults. Gotta grow up sometime and lose all your mystical qualities… I guess…

Quadrilha roubou até mesmo blocos do prédio da Petrobras

by @sensacionalista

Google Launches Chrome Remote Desktop App for iOS [iOS Blog]

by Juli Clover
Google today launched a Chrome Remote Desktop app for iOS, which allows Chrome users to access their Mac or PC desktop computers remotely using an iOS device. Google has had an Android version of the Chrome Remote Desktop app for several months and has finally brought the tool to iOS.

To access a PC or Mac remotely with the new app, users will first need to install the Chrome Remote Desktop on their computer, which is a free download from the Chrome Web Store. With both the desktop browser app and the iOS app, it’s possible for users to access their computers on an iOS device through the Chrome browser with a few simple taps after verifying through a generated code.

chromeremotedesktop
Securely access your computers from your iOS device.
- On each of your computers, set up remote access using the Chrome Remote Desktop app from Chrome Web Store.
- On your iOS device, open the app and tap on any of your online computers to connect.
In addition to allowing access from an iOS device with the new app, Google’s Chrome Remote Desktop feature also allows computer-to-computer access, which Google suggests is useful for securely accessing files on one machine from another or giving a friend temporary access to help solve a computer problem.

The Chrome Remote Desktop app can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

Here's A Photo Of Something That Can't Be Photographed

Here's A Photo Of Something That Can't Be Photographed

This seems like a normal, if blurry photograph of an object — a regular old cat stencil. The catch is, however, that the photons that hit the camera lens couldn't and didn't interact with the stencil in any way. So why can you see it?

CNN Founder Ted Turner’s Eerie Cold War-Era Video Made to Be Broadcast at the End of the World

by hodad

CNN became the first round-the-clock news channel in 1980, during the Cold War era. Media mogul Ted Turner, founder of CNN, understood well the threat of nuclear war during that time. While many television stations ended their broadcast day by playing “The Star-Spangled Banner” as a sign-off, Turner knew he only wanted CNN to sign off once: at the end of the world. He had an eerie and somber—yet patriotic—video made for CNN to broadcast on such an occassion, but with a band playing the song “Nearer, My God, to Thee” instead of the national anthem.

In a 1988 interview with The New Yorker, Turner spoke about how the tape was made.

Normally, when a TV station begins & ends the broadcast day, it signs on & off by playing the National Anthem. But with CNN–a 24-hour-a day channel–we would only sign off once & I knew what that would mean. So we got the combined Armed Forces marching bands together–the Army, Navy, Marine & Air Force bands–& took them out to the old CNN headquarters & we had them practice the National Anthem for a videotaping. Then, as things cranked up, I asked if they’d play ‘Nearer My God, to Thee’ to put on videotape just in case the world ever came to an end. That would be the last thing CNN played before we–before we signed off. And, I’ll tell you, those guys in the military bands knew what I was up to.

I keep this tape around because when the world ends it’ll be over before we can say what we wanted to say. Before we can leave any final messages.

Michael Ballaban, a former intern for CNN, shared a view of the warning on CNN’s archives for the video that reads, “HFR [hold for release] till the end of the world confirmed.”

by Marah Eakin

Dave Grohl is throwing himself a big, charitable birthday party in Los Angeles this weekend. “Dave’s Rock & Roll Club” will hold its inaugural meeting Saturday, January 10 at the Forum in Los Angeles, and will feature a Foo Fighters performance “in the round,” meaning the band will be entirely surrounded by fans—albeit ones behind barricades. Tickets are $50, $10 of which will be spread amongst three charities: Rock School Scholarship Fund, MusiCares, and Sweet Relief. Of course, tickets—which went on sale last night—are already sold out.

The Forum gig marks the Foos’ first show of 2015. They’ll be playing bigger arena and stadium shows later this week, and their full slate of dates is below.

Newswire: Game Of Thrones (and Veep and Silicon Valley) will return on April 12

by Katie Rife

Finally, some concrete news as HBO has reportedly set the premiere date for Game Of Thrones’ fifth season for Sunday, April 12, followed by the season premieres of both Veep and Silicon Valley that same night. That leaves just over three months of waiting until we find out what’s new with everyone but Hodor and friends, time that can be at least partially filled by watching two episodes from season four in IMAX later this month. Silicon Valley and Veep, on the other hand, will not be screening in IMAX anywhere any time soon, not until they make Martin Starr into an ice zombie anyway.

The Internet Archive Adds Nearly 2,400 MS-DOS Video Games for Browser-Based Play

by Rollin Bishop

Software Library

The Internet Archive has added nearly 2,400–currently 2,388 to be exact–MS-DOS video games to their Software Library for browser-based play. The Software Library also includes a slightly larger collection of general MS-DOS programs. We previously wrote about the addition of a Console Living Room which featured a large collection of vintage console video games playable in a browser.

Jason Scott, the man behind the lion’s share of work on these projects, has written up a lengthy post about the whole ordeal and what’s coming next.

First, I really worked hard to have only fully-functioning programs up, or at least, programs that gave viable, useful feedback. Some of them will still fall over and die, and many of them might be weird to play in a browser window, and of course you can’t really save things off for later, and that will limit things too. But on the whole, you will experience some analogue of the MS-DOS program, in your browser, instantly.

Extra Leap Second To Be Added To Clocks On June 30

by Soulskill
hcs_$reboot writes: On June 30 this year, the day will last a tad longer — one second longer, to be precise — as a leap second is to be added to clocks worldwide. The time UTC will go from 23:59:59 to 23:59:60 in order to cope with Earth's rotation slowing down a bit. So, what do you intend to do during that extra second added to that day? Well, you may want to fix your systems. The last time a leap second was added, in 2012, a number of websites, Java and even Linux experienced some troubles. Leap seconds can be disruptive to precision systems used for navigation and communication. Is there a better way of dealing with the need for leap seconds?

Firefox – Isolez vos onglets dans une Sandbox pour plus de sécurité

by Korben
