I got this adorable tattoo when I was in Detroit, MI (USA) at Motor City’s Tattoo Expo. The tattoo artist is Russell Van Schaick who is usually located in Orlando, FL (USA) where he works at Hart and Huntington Tattoo Co. His amazing work can be seen on his tumblr here: http://russellvanschaick.tumblr.com/
I got a Pikachu because I have loved him for almost 20 years and a stuffed animal of him helped me through a year of anxiety when I was a kid. So to have someone do it who loves nerdy stuff just as much as me, felt perfect :3
Let’s build open source tensor libraries for data science
Data scientists frequently find themselves dealing with high-dimensional feature spaces. As an example, text mining usually involves vocabularies comprised of 10,000+ different words. Many analytic problems involve linear algebra, particularly 2D matrix factorization techniques, for which several open source implementations are available. Anyone working on implementing machine learning algorithms ends up needing a good library for matrix analysis and operations.
But why stop at 2D representations? In a recent Strata + Hadoop World San Jose presentation, UC Irvine professor Anima Anandkumar described how techniques developed for higher-dimensional arrays can be applied to machine learning. Tensors are generalizations of matrices that let you look beyond pairwise relationships to higher-dimensional models (a matrix is a second-order tensor). For instance, one can examine patterns between any three (or more) dimensions in data sets. In a text mining application, this leads to models that incorporate the co-occurrence of three or more words, and in social networks, you can use tensors to encode arbitrary degrees of influence (e.g., “friend of friend of friend” of a user).
Being able to capture higher-order relationships proves to be quite useful. In her talk, Anandkumar described applications to latent variable models — including text mining (topic models), information science (social network analysis), recommender systems, and deep neural networks. A natural entry point for applications is to look at generalizations of matrix (2D) techniques to higher-dimensional arrays. For example, the image that follows is an attempt to illustrate one form of eigen decomposition:

Tensor methods are accurate and embarrassingly parallel
Latent variable models and deep neural networks can be solved using other methods, including maximum likelihood and local search techniques (gradient descent, variational inference, EM). So, why use tensors at all? Unlike variational inference and EM, tensor methods produce global and not local optima, under reasonable conditions. In her talk, Anandkumar described some recent examples — topic models and social network analysis — where tensor methods proved to be faster and more accurate than other methods.
[caption id="attachment_74838" align="aligncenter" width="570"] Error rates & recovery ratios from recent community detection experiments (running time measured in seconds). Source: Anima Anandkumar, used with permission.[/caption]
Scalability is another important reason why tensors are generating interest. Tensor decomposition algorithms have been parallelized using GPUs, and more recently using Apache REEF (a distributed framework originally developed by Microsoft). To summarize, early results are promising (in terms of speed and accuracy), and implementations in distributed systems lead to algorithms that scale to extremely large data sets.
[caption id="attachment_74837" align="aligncenter" width="570"] General framework. Source: Anima Anandkumar, used with permission.[/caption]
Hierarchical decomposition models
Their ability to model multi-way relationships make tensor methods particularly useful for uncovering hierarchical structures in high-dimensional data sets. In a recent paper, Anandkumar and her collaborators automatically found patterns and “...concepts reflecting co-occurrences of particular diagnoses in patients in outpatient and intensive care settings.”
Why aren’t tensors more popular?
If they’re faster, more accurate, and embarrassingly parallel, why haven’t tensor methods become more common? It comes down to libraries. Just as matrix libraries are needed to implement many machine learning algorithms, open source libraries for tensor analysis need to become more common. While it’s true that tensor computations are more demanding than matrix algorithms, recent improvements in parallel and distributed computing systems have made tensor techniques feasible.
There are some early libraries for tensor analysis in MATLAB, Python, TH++ from Facebook, and many others from the scientific computing community. For applications to machine learning, software tools that include tensor decomposition methods are essential. As a first step, Anandkumar and her UC Irvine colleagues have released code for tensor methods for topic modeling and social network modeling that run on single servers.
But for data scientists to embrace these techniques, we’ll need well-developed libraries accessible from the languages (Python, R, Java, Scala) and frameworks (Apache Spark) we’re already already familiar with. (Coincidentally, Spark developers just recently introduced distributed matrices.)
It’s fun to see a tool that I first encountered in math and physics courses having an impact in machine learning. But the primary reason I’m writing this post is to get readers excited enough to build open source tensor (decomposition) libraries. Once these basic libraries are in place, tensor-based algorithms become easier to implement. Anandkumar and her collaborators are in the early stages of porting some of their code to Apache Spark, and I’m hoping other groups will jump into the fray.

Glassy Pools of Used Motor Oil Reflect the Architectural Splendor of a Swiss Church
La Mise en Abîme (2013, used oil, metal) / All photos courtesy We Find Wildness
Created by Swiss artist Romain Crelier, La Mise en Abîme (an idiom that communicates the same thing as “a curveball,” but means, roughly, “to have put into an abyss”) was a visually arresting artwork installed on the floor of the Bellelay Abbey in Switzerland back in 2013. The piece is comprised of two shallow pools of used motor oil that function as mirrors, reflecting the architectural details of the surrounding interior. The crude juxtaposition of recycled oil and the impeccably preserved aesthetic of a 12th century church wasn’t lost on the artist who referred to the piece as “monochrome paintings using a despised substance.” You can see more photos on We Find Wildness. D’oh yeah! 'Simpsons’ fan recreates opening sequence in Minecraft
Minecraft released a Simpsons skin pack in late February, featuring Lisa, Bart, Homer, Marge and other favorite denizens of Springfield.
Now, YouTuber Bearly Regal has used those skins to recreate the famous opening sequence of the show, as well as a tour of the town, including looks inside Krusty Burger and Moe's Tavern
But there are some limits to building with Minecraft cubes — we'll never know for certain what Bart is writing on that chalkboard. Maybe it's, "I will not spend my entire life on Minecraft."
7 most 'Community' moments from the new episodes of 'Community'
Warning: This post contains spoilers about the first two episodes of Community, which debuted on Yahoo Screen Tuesday morning.
Community is back from the dead and living out its new life on Yahoo Screen, and while resurrection can really change a person, it hasn't done much of anything to Community. Thank goodness.
If anything, the show seems more comfortable in its skin than ever before
Of course, six seasons into the world of Community, the show should know what works and what doesn't. And, to be clear, everything about the first two episodes works — from the new cast additions (Paget Brewster is fantastic), to the plotlines (we meet Britta's parents) Read more...
More about Community, Television, Entertainment, Tv, and Yahoo ScreenSomeone On a British Airways Plane Took a Shit So Bad That It Had to Turn Around and Come Back Again
[body_image width='1024' height='702' path='images/content-images/2015/03/16/' crop='images/content-images-crops/2015/03/16/' filename='someone-did-a-shit-so-bad-a-british-airways-flight-had-to-turn-around-and-land-475-body-image-1426511390.jpg' id='36474']No suggestion that this particular airplane is currently weighed down with shit. It's just a photo of an airplane. Photo via Aero Icarus.
This article originally appeared on VICE UK.
A British Airways flight was forced to turn around and land over the weekend because somebody did a shit so bad the plane was essentially rendered useless. Imagine living your life in the knowledge that you once turded so appallingly that a 747-400 had to turn around and land. Your liquid shit bought a £360-million ($533-million) airplane juddering out of the sky. Imagine looking your loved ones in the face after that. Imagine hugging your mom. You couldn't. Your asshole is essentially a terrorist.
Anyway, the BA flight from Heathrow to Dubai on Saturday had to turn around and flop back down again at Heathrow just 30 minutes into the seven-hour flight because somebody did a toilet crime.
Hertsmere Tory councillor Abhishek Sachdev—who has clearly not heard the "he who smelt it, dealt it" directive—happened to be on the flight, and, as well as tweeting his response ("Insane! Our BA flight to Dubai returned back to Heathrow because of a smelly poo in the toilet! 15hrs until next flight... #britishairways") also spoke to the Daily Mail about the ordeal. Again: imagine making a smell so bad a Tory councillor talks to a national paper about it.
"The pilot made an announcement requesting senior cabin crew, and we knew something was a bit odd," he said. "About 10 minutes later he said, 'You may have noticed there's a quite pungent smell coming from one of the toilets.'
"He said it was liquid fecal excrement. Those are the words he used."
Two things:
i. The informed knowledge of the liquid state of the turd in question sort of suggests the pilot actually went and looked at the mess himself, and, in which case, did he hold his special pilot's hat over his nose?
ii. This question always comes up when someone does a shit so appalling that it might as well not be human. We've all seen a bad shit. We've all been to a pub. We've all traveled on a bus at least once in our lives. Everybody in Britain, at some point, has had to piss at a train station. We've all lifted a toilet seat and, like Pandora's Box, stared into the abyss-like doom of someone else's medically inadvisable droppings. But the question is this: how, and more specifically why, is it possible to shit up and around the rim of a toilet and, side-question, how does one shit up a wall?
Ask me to shit up a wall and I would not know where to start. If I was trying, I do not think I could shit along a vertical pane. But there are people out there who seem to manage it on the regular. Do they go to the doctor immediately after? When you "deposit" something so forcefully that it ricochets right back out again, do you go straight to A&E and say, like, "Hello, doctor, something is very wrong with me," or do you, like, try and walk it off? Also, why does this always happen in public toilets?
Anyway, the flight was rescheduled for the next day, and British Airways made a statement saying, "We're very sorry for the discomfort to our customers," before providing everyone on the flight—including the rogue shitter, presumably, whoever they may be—with overnight hotel accommodation.
Safe travels, rogue shitter. Peace be with your lower intestine.

These are the silly URLs the NSA uses for cyber espionage
Security researchers this week discovered an NSA cyber espionage program that installs malware in hard drive firmware, making it hard to detect or delete. It's serious stuff, but there's a light side to this story.
Kaspersky's researchers also published a list of URLs that the malware uses to "phone home" and pass information back to agents. Now, the NSA could use random, gibberish domains, but those look suspicious. So, instead, the agency registered and ran second-rate domains like newjunk4u.com and nickleplatedads.com. (Aside: Is that nickel plate dads or nickel-plated ads?)
Of course, these URLs have now been compromised, which means the NSA has no use for them. That does raise the possibility that the government could sell the domains off like the other unused gear it accrues. That's quite unlikely, but Wired got an expert to survey the list and generate an estimate. Domains like xLiveHost.com could be turned into a porn site, and might be worth up to $7,000, according to domain broker Dave Evanson. But CustomerScreenSavers.com is the best of the lot, and could net $40,000. He estimates the total list of over a hundred URLs could be worth up to $200,000.

Whether you are an ordinary person on the cyber world or a professional graphic designer, somehow or the other you need a font to write on the dialogue box. Without a font there is no existence of communication onto the cyber world. Fonts are used everywhere, in the advertisements, in the typography posters, in the business cards, in the logo designs, on a commercial/personal document, on billboards and flyers, on brochures and buntings, in the Microsoft Word or anywhere you possibly can think of
You simply can’t stand its absence. New and latest fonts come on hitting the globe to fulfill the immediate and diverse range of demanding tasks; they are made by experts in accordance with a specific motive and meaning behind them. Obviously you can’t use all sorts of fonts in all sorts of places.
Every font has a distinct story; it has a meaning and stance to manifest. In a formal writing you cannot use comic sans, it will look childish and not professional. However in a funky typography poster you cannot use a plain & simple font, the message will not get across like that as you wanted it to be.
That means a font has a vital role to play, it speaks about the thing it is written on. Today I am unfolding before you 15 gorgeous free fonts that are absolutely new in the market. Use these in your designs, taglines, on the header or anywhere you want.
Have a look at the collection. And guess what I have a good news for all of you; we have arranged some really fun packed and interesting posts for you. So the design and art lovers should stay glued to the blog to get up to date. We hope not to let you down this time again.

Ceramic Tile Illusion Painted on a Boring Electrical Box in Lisbon
Illustrator and street artist Diogo Machado (aka Add Fuel) transformed this plain looking electrical box on the streets of Lisbon into a surprising illusion by making it look like a cracked exterior is revealing a blue tile interior. The piece is an extension of Fuel’s ongoing Street Ceramic work, where modern interpretations of tile patterns are installed onto building facades. Vertical Forest: An Urban Treehouse That Protect Residents from Air and Noise Pollution
© Beppe Giardino
A potted forest of trees and branching steel beams disguise this 5-story apartment building in Turin, Italy. Designed by Luciano Pia, 25 Verde brings plants up off the ground in an attempt to evade Turin’s homogeneous urban scene and integrate life into the facade of the residential building.
The undulating structure creates a transition from outdoors to in, holding 150 trees that absorb close to 200,000 liters of carbon dioxide an hour. This natural absorption brings pollution protection to its residents, helping to eliminate harmful gasses caused by cars and harsh sounds from the bustling streets outside. The trees’ seasonal progression also creates the ideal microclimate inside the building, steadying temperature extremes during the cold and warmer months. The plants’ full foliage block rays of sun during the summer while letting in warm light during the winter.
The building holds 63 units, each benefiting from the terraces and vegetation just beyond their windows and walls. Each species of plant has been chosen purposefully from deciduous plant life in Turin to provide the highest variety of color, foliage, and blooming. This innovative design provides a childlike dream while also instilling real world benefits to those who live in this urban treehouse. (via Divisare)
