City Museum: A 10-Story Former Shoe Factory Transformed into the Ultimate Urban Playground

by Christopher Jobson

city-6

Housed in the former home of the 10-story International Shoe Company, the sprawling 600,000 square-foot City Museum in St. Louis is quite possibly the ultimate urban playground ever constructed. The museum is the brainchild of artist and sculptor Bob Cassilly who opened the space in 1997 after years of renovation and construction. Although Cassilly passed away in 2011, the museum is perpetually under construction as new features are added or improved thanks to a ragtag group of 20 artists known affectionately as the Cassilly Crew.

So what can you find at the City Museum? How about a sky-high jungle gym making use of two repurposed airplanes, two towering 10-story slides and numerous multi-floor slides, a rooftop Ferris wheel and a cantilevered school bus that juts out from the roof, subterranean caves, a pipe organ, hundreds of feet of tunnels that traverse from floor to floor, an aquarium, ball pits, a shoe lace factory, a circus arts facility, restaurants, and even a bar… because why not? All the materials used to build the museum including salvaged bridges, old chimneys, construction cranes, and miles of tile are sourced locally, making the entire endeavor a massive recycling project.

If you have kids (or are a kid at heart) and live in the midwestern United States or have any other means to get to St. Louis, if you aren’t immediately planning a trip to City Museum, you’re missing out on life. On my first visit last year our family hardly left the museum for two days. It is the complete antithesis to commercialized theme parks like Disneyland. You can see more photos at Gallery Hip.

by Francisco R. Villatoro

Dibujo20150528 Platform setup for a soft silicone arm and schematics - scientific reports

Dibujo20150528 Schematics analogy between conventional reservoir computing system and the system - abstract computational units - scientific reports

Creating 3-D Characters From Paper and Scalpel with @fidelisundqvist

For more behind-the-scenes photos of Fideli’s paper art, follow @fidelisundqvist on Instagram.

“My favorite things to build are characters, like a parrot for example,” says image-maker and paper artist Fideli Sundqvist (@fidelisundqvist) of Uppsala, Sweden, who creates three-dimensional objects and environments for images and props.

During her degree studies, Fideli found a way to work with 3-D paper to build characters and environments like a puppet theater. “It made it possible for me to feel the characters, and to make images and tales more intuitive. It’s a playful way to work, and opens up various opportunities and ideas.” She likes to post the behind-the-scenes process of her art, which is used for everything from digital and print campaigns to city projects in Sweden.

To create a parrot, Fideli searches the Internet for images for a collage, then draws onto card stock before cutting using a scalpel, shaving small strips for the feathers, and mounting these onto the base using double-sided tape. Then she adds details like claws, eyes and wings. “I often build only half-models, so one side is always flat. This is time efficient and works well for shooting,” Fideli says.

“I want to wake the child inside us regularly, so we do not forget that they exist in us. I think life can be a little more exciting and fun that way,” she says. “I hope people feel inspired, and for a while can go into their own fantasy worlds.”

When Ideology Takes A Back Seat to Party Politics

by admin

The brief time I led the Equal Marriage Arizona efforts to amend the Constitution to allow gay marriage was a real eye-opener for me.  I expected that since I was not a member of the largest gay activist groups, I might have to work to build up trust.  But it turned out, trust was not an issue.  I seldom had anyone question my sincerity.  However, I quickly found all the major gay rights groups (excepting the ACLU, bless their hearts) not just neutral or skeptical but actively opposing our effort.  Several people in these organizations dragged me in the figurative back room and explained that the leadership of their group would never accept a non-Democrat getting credit for such a success.  And one member of prominent organization (hint:  has same initials as Hillary Rodham Clinton) told me that their internal position was that they did not want gay marriage to come to Arizona until after 2016 because they wanted Hillary to be able to run on the issue and hoped to flip AZ blue in 2016.

So, a couple of years ago I would never have believed this story, but now it seems all too familiar

Just this week, legislators introduced a bill that would encourage drug companies to apply to sell contraceptives without a prescription.

But if Republican Sens. Cory Gardner of Colorado and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, along with four other GOP senators, were expecting flowers from Planned Parenthood and others for their bill, the Allowing Greater Access to Safe and Effective Contraception Act, they should brace for disappointment. Suddenly, the idea doesn’t sound so great, and the former supporters aren’t mincing words.

Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards said the bill is a “sham and an insult to women.”

Karen Middleton of NARAL Pro-Choice Colorado even got personal, saying, “Cory Gardner can’t be trusted when it comes to Colorado women and their health care.”...

Beneath the fear-mongering lies the more likely reason for the change of heart on the left. The bill was simply introduced by the wrong party.

Ethereal Aerial Sculpture High Above Boston

by Daniella

Une oeuvre magistrale nommée « As If It Were Already Here », à l’aspect quasi-fantomatique le jour et fluorescent la nuit.

Incredible Balloon Sculptures of Animals and Insects by Masayoshi Matsumoto

by Christopher Jobson

balloon-3

Don’t show these to your kids unless you want them to be completely underwhelmed by every balloon animal they see for the rest of their lives. Japanese balloon twister Masayoshi Matsumoto makes some of the most intricate balloon sculptures I’ve ever encountered. From prickly iguanas to glowing sea creatures it seems no life form is too difficult for Matsumoto to faithfully interpret using nothing but balloons. You can follow more of his work on Tumblr and on FB. (via Neatorama)
