Google now lets you prove your humanity with a single click

by Chris Velazco

oh thank you

There's something just a little insulting about having to prove your humanity to some website by pecking out some distorted words, but Google's rolling out a new, less tedious way for web developers to tell if you've got blood or oil pumping through ...

Cable-free elevator moves you in any direction

by Jon Fingas
Cooper Griggs

I was hoping for more technical info on this.

Elevators are absolutely vital in tall buildings, but they have their limits -- they can only move so quickly, and they can't usually move sideways to fetch you from the far side of a building. Both of those problems should be solved at once if Germa...

Indiegogo's crowdfunding insurance pays you back if projects go bust

by Jon Fingas
If you've poured a lot of money into crowdfunding, you've probably backed a project that either missed its release date or was an out-and-out fraud -- and since there are rarely recourses in these cases, that often means that you've wasted your money...

Newspaper and family show the exact right way to treat a transgender teen

A birth announcement is a beautiful thing. Especially 19 years after the fact.

In today’s Australian Courier Mail, the Bogert family issued this awesome birth announcement by way of a  ”retraction.” The announcement, which has since gone viral, exemplifies the right way to embrace your transgender child.

by Steve Dent

@GN you have any interest in this?

Sure, the idea of keeping your phone up-to-date by swapping out parts is nice. But Dave Hakkens didn't invent Phonebloks (with tech Motorola borrowed for Project Ara) so you could have the latest electronics -- he was simply trying to reduce waste. H...

Ontario-based photographer Stephen Orlando is fascinated with human movement and uses programmable LED light sticks attached to kayak paddles, people, racquets, and other objects to translate that movement into photographic light paintings. The act of recording motion on the surface of water surrounded by reflections creates a surprisingly unique effect, almost sculptural in nature. You can see many more photos in his kayaking, canoeing, and swimming galleries.

Here's a really fun sneak preview clip of Better Call Saul

via Abdulaziz Alhamidi

I'm still not sure if Better Call Saul is going to be good but I do know that I miss watching Breaking Bad so much that I don't really care. I'd watch characters like Saul Goodman and Mike Ehrmantraut in anything. Here's the first real good sneak peak of the upcoming TV show.

It shows Saul meeting Mike for probably not the first time. The series premieres on Sunday February 8th on AMC.

cah: Here are some of the best emails we got on Black Friday....

cah:

Here are some of the best emails we got on Black Friday. These people really can’t believe they really are getting exactly what they ordered.

Just to be clear, this is what was written on our website:

FAQ

Are you selling any of your normal products today? No.

Is this actually poop? Yes.

Is it also something that’s not poop? No.

Can I return it when I realize that it’s actually just poop? No.

Is the poop dangerous? No. The poop is sterilized.

Is it legal to mail poop? Only one way to be sure.

Why is the poop only $6? Through the magic of incredible Black Friday super-savings.

BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!

Wind-Swept Frost Blankets Tree Trunks in a Czech Forest

by Christopher Jobson

Wind Swept Frost Blankets Tree Trunks in a Czech Forest winter trees landscapes frost Czech Republic

Photographer Jan Bainar was hiking through the Beskydy Mountains last week, a range that forms the border between Slovakia and the Czech Republic, when he stumbled onto something spectacular. Low temperatures, high winds, and a bit of precipitation caused frost to form on one side of the tree trunks through the entire forest. Any meteorologists want to chime in on this? Is this the same thing as hoar frost or frost flowers? Something different? You can see more of Bainar’s landscape photography over on 500px. Photo courtesy the photographer.
