The natural shape of spaceships. Apollo vs NASA’s current fleet under construction.

The Hershey’s Kiss shape makes the spaceships inherently stable, and the broad flat bottom helps spread the blistering heat of re-entry.

By moving the centre of gravity we can alter how the ships fly, and thus roll and steer them to both reduce g-load and land precisely.

Senate IP address vandalzes Wikipedia to scrub "torture" from CIA torture report

by Cory Doctorow
Cooper Griggs

via Bewarethewumpus

An anonymous editor at 156.33.241.11 -- registered to the US Senate -- has repeatedly attempted to scrub the word "torture" from the Wikipedia entry from Senate Intelligence Committee report on CIA torture.

Attempts on Dec 9 and Dec 10 to remove references to "torture" were reverted by other Wikipedians. These edits -- and others -- can be read by following @congressedits, a twitterbot that tweets new Wikipedia edits from IPs registered to the US Congress (previously).

Bot Potts, via M.A.D.Gallery

Working out of his one-man workshop inside a mid-19th century barn, artist Bob Potts (previously) builds wonderous kinetic sculptures that replicate the motions of birds, fish, or other natural motions. The 72-year-old artist utilizes hand-crafted gears, levers, cranks, and chains to create these minimalist pieces that are focused solely on motion rather than ornamentation. Each piece can consume nearly a year’s worth of labor in his upstate New York shop where he works without the aid of computer, instead relying on decades of carpentry and skills learned while collaborating with painter and sculptor George Rhoads.

You can learn much more about his work over at M.A.D.Gallery. The videos above were shot and edited by Bryan Root from Motherlode Pictures.

Adam Interviews John Cleese

by Adam Savage

via Tertiarymatt

I had the incredible opportunity to interview one of my heroes a few weeks past. John Cleese and his five cohorts of Monty Python gave me the first laugh I shared with my parents. Cleese himself is not only in good shape for his 75 years, he’s surpassingly present, curious, generous and yes, funny. We even got to read one of his sketches together! I left for the tour the very next morning and I have to admit I’m still glowing. He brings the number of Pythons I’ve met to three (Gilliam and Jones being the others). I have rarely had such FUN doing an interview. I think I looked at the questions I wrote maybe three or four times total. That’s how far we ranged.

Instagram celebrates 300 million users, which is more than Twitter

by Mat Smith

More than Twitter? I thought they had more users than that.

There's apparently over 300 million people on Instagram - and they're really sharing those photos: to the tune of 70 million stills and videos every day. The user count puts it above Twitter, although it's still far behind the number using Facebook -...

Submarine Sandwich: A Fantastic New Stop Motion Short by PES

by Christopher Jobson
Cooper Griggs

so cool!

Director and stop-motion animator PES just released his latest animation titled Submarine Sandwich, the third short film in his cooking trilogy which also includes Western Spaghetti and Fresh Guacamole, the shortest film ever nominated for an Oscar. This latest film takes us into a retro deli where we witness the creation of, yes, a submarine sandwich using vintage sports memorabilia and other sliced objects that resemble food. PES has an uncanny ability to not only identify the perfect props for his films, but also sets them in motion in the most unexpected ways. Submarine Sandwich was funded through Kickstarter earlier this year. If you’re interested in some sweet stop motion animation merch, PES now has a shop where prints and props from many of his films are available for purchase.

Update: There’s now a behind-the-scenes clip.
