Tea party hero Dan Burton willfully ignores facts about vaccines

by Mark Frauenfelder

dan-burtonOn CNN this week, former Indiana Rep. Dan Burton told Anderson Cooper that he believes that mercury-based vaccine preservative caused his grandson's autism.

I'm for vaccinations, but we need to get the mercury out of all of them," Burton told CNN's Anderson Cooper.

"Well, are you against breastfeeding?" Cooper asked?

Burton replied that he is not.

"OK, but you are aware that methylmercury is actually in breast milk that's given to children?" Cooper asked "If the child is only breastfed, they get more methylmercury than they would ever have gotten in any of the vaccines. You're aware of that, right?"

Burton replied that he is not an expert on breastfeeding.

When Cooper pointed out that methylmercury has been either removed or greatly reduced in vaccines, Burton said, "You're a very bright young man, but I don't know where you get your information."

You may remember Dan Burton as the US Congressman who called Clinton a "scumbag," and said of Clinton, "No one, regardless of what party they serve, no one, regardless of what branch of government they serve, should be allowed to get away with these alleged sexual improprieties..." Burton himself finally admitted to fathering a child out of wedlock in 1983, something he indignantly denied for years until an expose revealed that he was a liar.

Vaccination rate and measles outbreak simulation

by Nathan Yau

Vax rate and infection simulation

You've probably heard about herd immunity by now. Vaccinations help the individual and the community, especially those who are unable to receive vaccinations for various reasons. The Guardian simulated what happens at various vaccination rates.

Luckily, the measles vaccine — administered in the form of the MMR for measles, mumps and rubella — is very effective. If delivered fully (two doses), it will protect 99% of people against the disease. But, like all vaccines, it’s not perfect: 1% of cases are likely to result in vaccine failure, meaning recipients won’t develop an immune response to the given disease, leaving them vulnerable. Even with perfect vaccination, one of every 100 people would be susceptible to measles, but that’s much better than the alternative.

If you're still unsure, please consult this flowchart to decide.

Mixed in with photographs of his scenic surroundings in Encinitas, California, artist and illustrator Carter Asmann shares whimsical interpretations of coffee stains on his Instagram account. Among his most impressive pieces are his graphite drawings of motorcycles and other vehicles that rest on drippy caffeinate circles. The contrast of his detailed renderings with the sloppy coffee tires never seems to get old. You can see more here, and coincidentally, illustrator Oliver Jeffers shared some of his own coffee stain drawings just yesterday. (via Booooooom)

Schock's Worst Week Gets Worser

by Joe Jervis
Cooper Griggs

via lbstopher

From Blue Nation Review:
The month before the 2012 elections, Congressman Schock sold his house to a major Republican donor who was also one of his campaign supporters for a price that appears to far exceed the market value at the time. Ali Bahaj – then a Vice President at Caterpillar – and his wife Gloria have donated more than $45,000 over the last decade to the Caterpillar PAC and various Republican officeholders – including Congressman Schock. In fact, Federal Election Commission records show that Mr. and Mrs. Bahaj each made the maximum allowable donation to Aaron Schock’s campaign in 2008. Congressman Schock on October 16, 2012 sold his home to the Bahajs for $925,000. That’s more than three times the tax assessed value of the property. Zillow estimates that the house was worth approximately $695,000 that month. It’s possible Congressman Schock just got incredibly lucky finding the right buyer to throw him a life raft as homeowners around him were drowning. But it begs the question: Was this transaction more than just luck?
Hit the link for comparisons to other recent home sales on that street. (Tipped by JMG reader TJ)
