Brutal but Beautiful: Book of 88 WWII Coastal Military Ruins

by Urbanist

world war eerie images

Traveling 23,000 miles over 4 years, photographer Marc Wilson has amassed an amazing collection of images spanning bunkers, gun emplacements, observation posts, command centres and other wartime infrastructure around Europe.

In his book, The Last Stand, 86 of the resulting images are arrayed to tell a complex story of different times and places. More than merely photographing these haunting remnants of war, however, Wilson also provides highly articulate reflections on everything from their site-specific purposes and aesthetics to their broader places in military and architectural histories.

“Composed of copious quantities of poured concrete,” many of these structures “defy and eschew any established aesthetic sensibilities: no hint of the classical, the gothic or the baroque here. Their geometries, purely contingent, were designed to resist the effects of the latest developments in projectile technology, their profiles shaped to deflect such missiles and avoid any direct percussive explosions on their structures.”

His shots are carefully composed and timed, often taking place in the early hours of the morning when eerie mists and dim lights grant the subjects a surrealistic atmosphere. There is a dreaminess and dreariness to his work that manages to make the objects captured seem both ordinary and otherworldly. Prints of many of the pieces featured in the book can be purchased as well.

Unlike even the most pragmatic warehouse of the time, “there was nothing speculative or arbitrary about the bulwarks of their sometimes bizarre and often ungainly forms: they were purely functional. While far from being graceful or classically proportioned, there is something visually appealing about the alien (and sometimes sinister) forms of those bunkers. Novelty does not quite describe this appeal: more surprise perhaps – a surprise that courts the sublime.”

Scientists take detailed pictures of the smallest known life forms

by Jon Fingas
Just how small can life get? Almost unbelievably small, if you ask a team of Berkeley Lab researchers. They've taken the first detailed electron microscope pictures of the tiniest bacteria known to date -- at a typical 0.009 cubic microns in volume, ...

This is a weed.

And it holds every child’s hopes and dreams.

"Weed" is a word for "plant I don’t know how to do anything with yet." But weeds, as a rule, are successful species. Because they can grow anywhere and they can live through anything.

So can you.

Be a weed. Grow, adapt, flourish, and don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks of you because of how pretty or useful you are. You are. That is enough.

This. This is the most inspiring thing I have ever read

This Bubbling Ferrofluid Light Works like a Magnetized Lava Lamp

We’ve seen a number of interesting ways to play with magnetized ferrofluid over the last few years, but here’s a new one worth a mention. Designer Kyle Haines just launched a Kickstarter featuring his design for a “motion lamp” filled with heated ferrofluid that can be manipulated with a pair of magnets called the Inspiration. The idea works somewhat similar to the iconic 60s-era lava lamp but with a magnetized twist. For those who just want to play with ferrofluid without the lamp, he’s also create a smaller self-contained bottle called the Thinker. See a video of them in action here.

A Math Professor Demonstrates the Complicated Procedure of Drawing a 17-Sided Figure With a Compass and Ruler

by Glen Tickle
A. Kachmar

Geez, a pentagon is difficult enough

In a recent video by Numberphile, University of California, Berkeley math professor David Eisenbud demonstrates the complicated procedure needed to draw a heptadecagon–a 17-sided figure–using just a compass and ruler. Carl Friedrich Gauss first proved the method in 1796.

In a separate video on the accompanying channel Numberphile2, Eisenbud gets into greater detail about the mathematics behind the figure and Fermat primes.

Aoshima, Miyazaki, The Southern Japanese Island That Plays Host to Over 120 Feral Cats

by Lori Dorn

Aoshima, Miyazaki

Photographer Thomas Peter has captured gorgeous images of Aoshima, Miyazaki, the southern Japanese island that plays host to over 120 feral cats who outnumber the resident humans at a ratio of 6 to 1.

Originally introduced to the mile-long island of Aoshima to deal with mice that plagued fishermen’s boats, the cats stayed on – and multiplied. More than 120 cats swarm the island with only a handful of humans for company, mostly pensioners who didn’t join the waves of migrants seeking work in the cities after World War Two. Aoshima, a 30-minute ferry ride off the coast of Ehime prefecture, had been home to 900 people in 1945. The only sign of human activity now is the boatload of day-trippers from the mainland, visiting what is locally known as Cat Island.

Here's a Cat That's Not a Cat (Or Is It?)

by Esther Inglis-Arkell

This animal is a fossa. At first it closely resembles a cat. But when you look a little closer, close enough to look at its DNA . . . it's still pretty confusing.

And Mr. Lizard on Guitar

by Lisa Marcus

Yogyakarta, Indonesia-based photographer Aditya Permana happened to click his shutter on this forest dragon lizard just in time to catch him deep in a musical trance while performing a leaf guitar solo. Permana told the Dailymail that he

"did not directly photograph the lizard at first, until the lizards feel calm and comfortable around me. I noticed it looked like it was playing a guitar – and it didn’t move at all.

Don't miss the other pictures of this guitar solo on the photographer's Facebook page. See more of his work there and at his 500px site. Fans of his work can follow him on social media via Twitter as well.

You’ll never have to look for the bottle opener again

by Janet Cloninger

pop-n-pour-beer-mug-with-opener

You’ll always know that your bottle opener is attached to the bottom of your beer mug.  The Pop ‘n Pour Beer Mug with Opener is a 24-ounce glass handled beer mug with a stainless steel bottle opener permanently attached to the bottom.  The opener is magnetic, so it will hold on to the bottle cap until you’re ready to dispose of it, and it’s flush mounted to the bottom of the mug so you can set it down without fear of spilling the contents.  The 24 ounce mug can hold two full beers, so you won’t be running out too soon.  The Pop ‘n Pour Beer Mug with Opener is $19.99 at Brookstone.

West Bengal, India. October 21, 2013. Blind girls Sonia, 12, and Anita Singh, 5, are born into poverty with congenital cataract blindness. They must accompany their parents everywhere as they cannot be left alone without risk. The surgery to cure this is simple and takes 15 minutes but because of the level of poverty in this family they have been unable to pursue the necessary operation. India has more than 12 million blind, the majority of which suffer from cataract blindness. Poverty is the main reason these millions of people are trapped in this condition. Donor funding has recently enabled both sisters to finally go for this operation. This essay is an attempt to tell the story of their lives before surgery, during the operation to regain their sight and after as they begin to discover light. © Brent Stirton, South Africa, Shortlist, Contemporary Issues, Professional, 2015 Sony World Photography Awards
