Half Corked Marathon Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country Getaway

by Rebecca Bollwitt

Throughout the spring, summer and fall, Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country is a haven for visitors, capturing the best of the South Okanagan. From vineyards to orchards, the Okanagan is one of Canada’s prime agricultural areas. With dramatic landscapes and remarkable terroir, the valley is one of BC’s most beautiful and diverse places to visit, extending from the southernmost point of Osoyoos to the tip of McIntyre Bluff, north of Oliver. Bordered by mountain ranges, rivers, and lakes, the area is majestic by nature – and naturally unique.

Half Corked Marathon

Created by the Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association, and inspired by the legendary Medoc Marathon in Bordeaux, the Half Corked Marathon pays homage to one of Canada’s most decorated wine regions; a celebration of the Golden Mile and Black Sage Road benches connecting the communities of Oliver and Osoyoos. Taking place on Saturday, May 24, 2014 this is the fourth year of the Half Corked Marathon and it will be the largest to date with 800 runners taking part.

The Half Corked Marathon route is 18km and can be jogged or run in 90 minutes or walked in three hours. Racers are not timed but after three and a half hours the wagon comes to collect participants.

Stops along the way include 10-12 wineries and food stations, where racers can sample local wine and fine cuisine from Oliver-Osoyoos restaurants. There will be four waves of runners and a total of 800 participants. Runners are encouraged to dress up and there will be prizes for costumes.

High demand for tickets to the Half Corked Marathon in 2013 meant that a new lottery system was put in place for 2014 and tickets were allocated through a lottery system in February. Oliver Osoyoos Wine Country want to invite one lucky Miss604 reader to the region to give them a coveted spot in the marathon along with this prize pack:

  • 2 nights accommodation in a one-bed suite at Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort & Spa in Osoyoos for May 23rd and May 24th, 2014.

Vancouver Construction Time-Lapse GIFs

by Rebecca Bollwitt
© 2004-2013 Rebecca Bollwitt - Miss604.

I was recently browsing the Vancouver archive GIF goodness that is Vancouver Rising and I noticed that one of the animated images was a series of photos from the City of Vancouver Archives that were simply stitched together. It reminded me of this collection of “Under Construction” photos I posted last year and made me realize that I could probably achieve the same effect.

Thanks to sequences of images, photographed by the great Leonard Frank, I put together a few Vancouver construction time-lapse GIFs featuring prominent historic buildings in the city:

Why UPS Trucks Don’t Turn Left #makerbusiness

by adafruit

Why UPS Trucks Don’t Turn Left.

UPS engineers found that left-hand turns were a major drag on efficiency. Turning against traffic resulted in long waits in left-hand turn lanes that wasted time and fuel, and it also led to a disproportionate number of accidents. By mapping out routes that involved “a series of right-hand loops,” UPS improved profits and safety while touting their catchy, environmentally friendly policy. As of 2012, the right turn rule combined with other improvements — for the wow factor, UPS doesn’t separate them out — saved around 10 million gallons of gas and reduced emissions by the equivalent of taking 5,300 cars of the road for a year.

To Reduce the Health Risk of Barbecuing Meat, Just Add Beer

by timothy
PolygamousRanchKid (1290638) writes "Grilling meat gives it great flavour. This taste, though, comes at a price, since the process creates molecules called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which damage DNA and thus increase the eater's chances of developing colon cancer. But a group of researchers led by Isabel Ferreira of the University of Porto, in Portugal, think they have found a way around the problem. When barbecuing meat, they suggest, you should add beer. The PAHs created by grilling form from molecules called free radicals which, in turn, form from fat and protein in the intense heat of this type of cooking. One way of stopping PAH-formation, then, might be to apply chemicals called antioxidants that mop up free radicals. And beer is rich in these, in the shape of melanoidins, which form when barley is roasted." (The paper on which this report is based, sadly paywalled.)

Perched at the window of his Cessna 172, photographer Klaus Leidorf crisscrosses the skies above Germany while capturing images of farms, cities, industrial sites, and whatever else he discovers along his flight path, a process he refers to as “aerial archaeology.” Collectively the photos present a fascinating study of landscapes transformed by the hands of people—sometimes beautiful, sometimes frightening. Since the late 1980s Leidorf has shot thousands upon thousands of aerial photographs and currently relies on the image-stabilization technology in his Canon EOS 5D Mark III which is able to capture the detail of single tennis ball as it flies across a court. You can explore over a decade of Leidorf’s photography at much greater reslution over on Flickr. All images courtesy the artist.

Use Less Water and Rely on Steam for Perfect Soft-Boiled Eggs

by Alan Henry

Cooking soft-boiled eggs is usually a matter of careful timing and not too much heat. It can be hit-or-miss, so the folks at America's Test Kitchen wanted a more repeatable method that worked every time. The secret? Way less water than you think—about a half-inch, tops.

60 Minutes Dubbed Engines Noise Over Tesla Model S

by timothy
cartechboy (2660665) writes "Did you watch the Tesla 60 Minutes segment the other night? If you did, you might have ended up on the floor rolling around laughing like I did. Since when does the Tesla Model S electric car make audible engine noises? Or downshift? Turns out, 60 Minutes dubbed engine noises and a downshift over the Model S running footage. The show claims it was an editing error. Call it what you want, it was absolutely hilarious. A little note to TV producers assigned to cover Tesla Motors in the future: Electric cars don't upshift or downshift." At least they didn't fraudulently blow it up!

The Italian photographer and illustrator now lives and works in Bristol, UK where he does commercial work for digital brands, magazines, and album covers. Seveso was also kind enough to let us use an image from Blackground as part of small Colossal design refresh for the next few months.

This Cannabis-Infused Pizza Will Satisfy Your Munchies Then Get You High All Over Again

by Samantha Grossman

It’s always tough to decide what toppings to get on your pizza: Pepperoni! Mushrooms! Pineapple! Peppers! Anchovies! But what if marijuana was also a topping option? That would change everything!

Well, at Vancouver’s Mega iLL restaurant, pot on your pizza actually is an option. If you’re 18 and have a medical marijuana card, that is. For an extra $10, you can get the special ingredient baked right into your pie.

“Basically we infuse it through an oil extraction process, where we drizzle the oil onto the pizza and it medicates you when you eat it,” employee Anthony Risling told CBC News. “It’s a little different effect from smoking it. It takes maybe about a half hour for it to activate.”

Talk about high-end dining.

Quiznos Mashes Up Game of Thrones and House of Cards, and Somehow It Works

by Victor Luckerson

Sandwich shop Quiznos has decided to combine two of 2014’s most talked-about shows, House of Cards and Game of Thrones into one oddly entertaining parody video. In the three-minute short, a man playing the conniving and eloquent Frank Underwood offers wry witticisms directly to the camera as he travels around the continent of Westeros, poisoning kings and throwing warriors into endless abysses. He even stops his evil plotting for a moment to make the requisite short joke about Tyrion Lannister.

At the end of the spoof Underwood holds up a bag of Quiznos to remind the audience exactly why this video was made. It’s featured on Quiznos-backed comedy website called Toasty.TV that the company uses to offer up branded entertainment, an increasingly popular form of advertising that is aimed at bringing viewers enjoyment rather than making a hard sell. Chipotle has also been experimenting with this type of content. The burrito chain has a comedy series on Hulu that is about the dangers of industrial farming rather than Chipotle itself.

Microsoft Office Goes Fully Free on iPhone and Android Phones

by Jared Newman

Along with the big news that Microsoft has launched Office on Apple’s iPad, Microsoft has also made the iPhone and Android phone versions completely free.

Office was available for iPhone and Android phones before, but you couldn’t create or edit documents without an Office 365 subscription, which starts at $7 per month. Now, all you need is a free Microsoft account. (Full editing on the new iPad version requires an Office 365 subscription.)

The smartphone versions aren’t particularly robust. In Word, you can type, search, add comments and perform some basic font formatting, but that’s it. In Excel, you can search, filter and perform five simple mathematical functions. You can open existing PowerPoint files and edit slide text, but you can’t create new presentations.

Still, it could be useful for light editing and note taking. Because all files save automatically to OneDrive, I’m looking forward to jotting down thoughts from my phone and using Office Online on my desktop to pick up where I left off.

If you’re looking for an Android tablet version of Office, no such luck. Microsoft’s productivity suite still isn’t supported on larger screens, so you’ll have to use an alternative like QuickOffice, Kingsoft Office or OfficeSuite.

San Francisco Mulls Golden Gate Suicide Net After Record Number of Deaths

by Denver Nicks

San Francisco officials are poised to install the Golden Gate Bridge’s first suicide safety net after a record number of people died leaping off the world-famous bridge last year. 46 people jumped to their deaths in 2013, while 118 more were talked down.

The $66 million stainless-steel nets will hang 20 feet below the bridge and be invisible from most angles, The New York Times reports.

The Golden Gate Transportation District is expected to vote in favor of installing the suicide barrier as early as May. Other similarly iconic and dangerously tall structures, such as the Empire State Building and the Eiffel Tower, already have such barriers in place.

A families of the deceased group estimates more than 1,600 people have died jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge since construction finished in 1937.
