Actually, You Can’t Buy Smog Insurance in China Anymore

by Michelle Arrouas

A week after insurance companies in China announced that they would start selling smog insurance, government regulators have ordered an end to the practice, Reuters reports. No official explanation has been offered.

One of the smog policies would have guaranteed travelers booking three- to seven day package tours to certain major cities a refund of about 50 yuan (about $8) per day if they suffered two or more consecutive days of severe smog. It was sold by the insurance group Ping An and the online travel agency Ctrip.

Another policy, launched by the People’s Insurance Company of China (PICC), was directed at Beijing residents. The insurance company promised to pay 300 yuan (just under $50) to policy holders if the official index of smog in the Chinese capital exceeded the hazardous 300 level for five consecutive days, and to pay 1,500 yuan (roughly $240) to policy holders hospitalized as a result of smog.

Both Ping An and PICC have said that policies sold before the ban will be honored.

Beer and wine coming to Vancouver Starbucks locations in the evenings?

by Kenneth Chan

I have always wondered who are these people who go to Starbucks at night...I am not talking about someone studying, but the people who look like they are there having a casual conversation. Have you not heard of alcohol? Still I will not frequent Starbucks for alcohol....only if I am desperate

Starbucks wants you to be in their cafes during the evenings, so naturally the coffee chain giant is turning to new food offerings and – more importantly – alcohol sales. […]

Redesigned Consumer Packaging Disappears To Eliminate Waste

Redesigned Consumer Packaging Disappears To Eliminate Waste

For his masters thesis, recent Pratt Institute graduate Aaron Mickelson redesigned mainstream consumer packaging to eliminate waste. How? By creating a package that completely disappears by the time the product is finished. The Disappearing Project presents 5 different solutions in a hope to spark conversation and change.

Glad Bags: The package is made up of the last bag in the package itself, leaving no extra trash when it gets used. All the product information and logo are printed using traditional oil-based inks on the package in case you need a reminder of what you purchased.

Tide Pods: Instead of its traditional plastic bag packaging, a sheet of laundry pods will be stitched together, printed using soap-soluble ink. The individual pod packing for each pod is also water-soluble and dissolves in the wash.

OXO Pop Containers: OXO containers have a shiny, logo-ed paper inside the container. Instead of the normal printing methods, the instructions are printed directly onto the container using soap-soluble ink. Then, the label breaks down easily once the consumer washes it for the first time.

Nivea Bar Soap: A simple but effective solution—use a septic-safe, water-soluble paper to wrap the soap. The user will take the whole package into the shower with them, leaving the wrapper to dissolve.

Twining Tea Bags: As of now, tea packaging is lined with wax, preventing it from being composted. Mickelson’s solution is to glue together the sachets into a folded up, self-standing brick. While there still results in some packaging waste (as will likely always be the case with food packaging) but it has been diminished. However, when the product is gone, so is the packaging—which is the running theme for all of these new solutions.

Here’s What Facebook’s New Frank Gehry-Designed Campus Will Look Like

by Katy Steinmetz

If you took each square foot of Facebook’s proposed expansion and laid them in one long line, the length of that line would be the equivalent of 75,400 Mark Zuckerbergs, laid head to toe (not including the 5’9″ CEO’s hoodie or Adidas sandals). The new “West Campus” planned to be completed by spring 2015 is a sprawling 433,555 sq.-ft., design by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry.

Courtesy of Facebook

New photos of a model of the campus, provided to TIME by Facebook, show a design that is more subdued than iconic Gehry landmarks like the flowing silvery sails that make up L.A.’s Walt Disney Concert Hall. Facebook asked that the design be less brazen, something that fit naturally into the marshlands that are already there in Menlo Park, Calif. “They felt some of those things were too flashy and not in keeping with the kind of the culture of Facebook, so they asked us to make it more anonymous,” Gehry’s partner Craig Webb told the Palo Alto Daily News. “Frank was quite willing to tone down some of the expression of architecture in the building.”

Courtesy of Facebook

The building is oblong, roughly the shape of a blank status-update box, and 73-ft. high at its tallest. The plan is for one of those giant, open working spaces that start-up culture adores, with no divisions or walled-off offices. (A Facebook spokesperson concedes that a few necessities, like the bathrooms, will not be open-plan.) A total of 2,800 employees can fit in the space, which is about the size of Facebook’s current offices across the expressway in Silicon Valley.

Courtesy of Facebook

The crown jewel of the design is the roof, which will be covered by a park with trees transplanted from around California and “drought-resistant grasses.” Picture: coffee shop, burger shack, walking paths, an abundance of benches. On the ground floor, employees will look out one side to another park and the other to native tidal marshlands.

Courtesy of Facebook

To get approval for the plans, Facebook had to make plenty of promises to the local city council, like contributing millions toward affordable housing and a new charitable foundation, according to the AllFacebook blog. “Congratulations,” Menlo Park Mayor Peter Ohtaki told Facebook employees after the council voted unanimously to approve the plans last year. “Where’s the ‘Like’ button?”

Every 60 Seconds, Apple Makes More Money Than You Do in a Year

by Matt Vella

Check out this interactive: It shows how much revenue and profit a handful of technology companies generate—by the second. When you land on the page, a clock starts ticking, showing how the profits at Apple, Google, Samsung and others grows comparatively. Apple brings in about $70,000 in profit every 60 seconds, Samsung follows at about $55,000, with Microsoft at $42,000, Google at 24,000 and Amazon at just $1,400. Twitter, in contrast, is still losing money.

Air Canada is betting less legroom for passengers will lift profit. Customers might complain but investors love it

by Frederic Tomesco, Bloomberg News

Air Canada is betting less legroom for passengers translates into higher profit.

Canada’s largest carrier has done the math and figures that adding at least 22 seats on jets of its Rouge unit turns money-losing routes to destinations such as the Caribbean profitable. Air Canada’s main carrier has also begun flying five “high-density” Boeing Co. 777 jets with more than 100 additional seats than standard models.

“Densed-up” aircraft are a key part of a plan by Chief Executive Officer Calin Rovinescu to cut expenses for each seat flown a mile by 15% over five years — even as some customers lament the lack of legroom. Other cost saving measures include the addition of 37 fuel-efficient Boeing 787 Dreamliners starting this year and the full roll out of Rouge, Rovinescu said.

Postmedia News
Postmedia News“Densed-up” aircraft are a key part of a plan by Chief Executive Officer Calin Rovinescu to cut expenses for each seat flown a mile by 15% over five years — even as some customers lament the lack of legroom.

High-density planes have “turned out to be a great strategy for us,” Rovinescu, 58, said March 6 in an interview at Bloomberg’s office in Toronto.

While customers have registered complaints about the moves on such sites as Skytrax and TripAdvisor, investors welcome Air Canada’s efforts.

Air Canada’s widely traded Class B stock has risen sixfold in the past two years, outstripping a 15% gain by Canada’s benchmark Standard & Poor’s/TSX Composite Index. The Bloomberg Americas Airlines Index has almost doubled during that time.

Those denser planes are the nature of air travel nowadays. Airlines are going to have to do more with less

Cutting Costs

Rovinescu, who marks his fifth anniversary at the helm of the carrier on April 1, is betting the strategies he’s employing to cut costs — along with the elimination of the company’s pension overhang — will break the stock free of the lower multiples at which Canada’s two biggest airlines trade compared with U.S. peers. Air Canada’s stock relative to earnings trades at less than half the rate of Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc. and United Continental Holdings Inc. of Chicago.

Putting passengers in 30-inch pitch seats “is standard practice now,” said Walter Spracklin, a transportation analyst at RBC Capital Markets in Toronto who recommends investors buy Air Canada stock. “It’s the norm. It’s not like a competitor is offering a better product solution for the same price.”

Pitch is the distance from the back of a seat to the back of the one behind it. The pitch differs according to fare category and plane, ranging from 29 inches in the cheapest Rouge seats on the A319, to 44 inches in Air Canada’s high-density 777s in executive first class.

Slimline Seats

Several airlines are installing “slimline” seats made of thinner material and a shorter seat bottom, which allows them to add an extra row or two in coach without making the seating feel more crowded. Southwest did this to get six additional seats on its 737s.

Air Canada began Rouge July 1 with a view to improving the profitability of routes that typically draw fewer high-paying business passengers. Rouge’s fleet, which had 10 planes at the end of 2013, will grow to 33 planes by the end of this year and eventually reach 50, Rovinescu said. Rouge now flies to 28 destinations, with plans to add 17 over time.

Rouge’s Airbus Group NV A319 jets cost 21% less to operate than the same planes on Air Canada, while the Boeing 767s, with 51 extra seats, cost 29% less. Seat configuration accounts for about two-thirds of the difference, with labor representing the rest, the CEO said.

Not Ryanair

“The strategy with Rouge is not to create a low-cost carrier that is going to out-Ryanair Ryanair,” Rovinescu said, referring to the Dublin-based discount airline. “It’s to have a leisure carrier that will assist Air Canada in lowering its costs for that segment of its business, meaning leisure, largely sun destinations.”

While Air Canada doesn’t break out Rouge’s results, Rovinescu said the unit has met its cost-reduction goals “bang- on” since it started.

“The six-month indications were stellar,” he said. “Obviously the success is measured if we can manage the operation and keep the infrastructure costs down. We are keeping those low.”

David Tyerman, an analyst at Canaccord Genuity who recommends investors buy Air Canada stock, said 2014 will go far in determining the long-term success of Rouge.

Jury’s Out

“The jury is very much out on Rouge,” Tyerman said by telephone from Toronto. “We don’t really know how well it’s going to work out.”

Air Canada still has a ways to go to improve its cost picture. Seat mile costs at the Montreal-based company amounted to 16.9 cents in the fourth quarter of 2013, exceeding the 13 cent average of 12 North American carriers tracked by Bloomberg. That’s partly due to higher landing fees and other costs related to operating in Canada. The airline also pockets more revenue per domestic mile than the other North American carriers, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

“They’ve got lots of levers to pull on the cost side,” said Bob Decker, a fund manager with Aurion Capital Management Inc. who helps manage about $6 billion and owns Air Canada stock. “Those denser planes are the nature of air travel nowadays. Airlines are going to have to do more with less.”

Packing More

Air Canada’s strategy of packing in more passengers also extends to its mainline, where it now flies new Boeing 777s on routes such as Vancouver-Hong Kong and Montreal-Paris. Air Canada’s 777s are built to carry 458 passengers, 109 more than standard models.

“That is huge, because you are basically getting 100 seats for free,” Rovinescu said.

After Air Canada deployed a 777 to the Montreal-Paris route last year, “it went from being from one of our poor international routes to being one of our best,” Rovinescu said March 10 at a JPMorgan Chase & Co. conference in New York.

Aurion’s Decker recently flew on one of the Air Canada high-density 777s between Vancouver and Toronto, and said the journey proved to be “a lot more pleasant experience than you’d think. I was surprised at how comfortable it was. I’ve been in far worse planes than that.”

Quiznos Files for Bankruptcy

by Noah Rayman

The sandwich chain Quiznos filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Friday, but said it would continue operating as it cuts into its heavy debt.

The company had tried to set itself apart with toasted subs. It oversees almost 2,100 franchise locations worldwide and will continue to toast those subs as it cuts more than $400 million in debt and makes improvements for the future, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The bankruptcy filing has been in the making for two years, the Journal reports. Quiznos, which has a reputation for high operating costs among franchise owners, has had to shutter thousands of stores.

These Photos Show What the Average Person Who Is Arrested for Drugs Looks Like

by Laura Stampler

In an effort to increase substance abuse awareness, Recovery.org decided to compile 100 mugshots from marijuana, DUI, and methamphetamine arrests to see what the average face looks like on drugs.

“While it is unlikely that a user’s basic facial structure depends on the substance they were arrested for, the goal of this project is to expose the effects certain substances might have on a user’s appearance,” the website reads. And what better way to illustrate that than through gifs?

According to Recovery.org, marijuana users tend to have rounder features and a full face, meth users appear gaunt with sagging skin and sunken eyes, and DUI arrestees look … pretty normal.

Here’s a larger version of the final results:

For a city so active, there sure are a lot of places to sit down and take a break. However, I think it’s more a matter of having a place to pause and take in the stunning views than anything else. We have benches made of recycled materials, benches with commemorative plaques, benches where you can enjoy your latest food truck take-out lunch. Inspired by Vancouver is Awesome’s The Mighty Booth series, I found a collection of photos in the Miss604 Flickr Pool that feature these convenient outdoor seats.

Paris Makes Public Transportation Free Amid Severe Smog

by Alex Rogers

A number of French cities including Paris have decided to make public transportation free this weekend in an effort to combat extraordinarily high levels of smog.

The emergency measure was announced by the French Minister for Ecology Philippe Martin on Thursday, AFP reports. The severe pollution is caused by unusually warm weather, a lack of wind, and a combination of cold nights and balmy days. Airparif, a non-profit organization accredited by the Ministry of Environment to monitor the air quality in Paris, reported that Thursday’s level of pollution hit the top of its index and that the agency will remain on alert over the next few days.

In October, the World Health Organization classified outdoor air pollution as carcinogenic.
