Surfer Mick Fanning was NOT Attacked by a Shark

by Rebecca Watson

This morning, the World Surf League event at J-Bay in South Africa saw one of the most incredible things to ever happen during a live pro surfing broadcast: finalist Mick Fanning encountering what appeared to be at least one very large shark.

The video is incredible, as you can see Mick turn just as the shark’s dorsal fin breaks the water inches behind him. He falls off his board and gets pulled underwater just as a wave goes by and blocks the view of him from the camera. When it passes, he’s swimming hard away from the shark. He turns and waves off his competitor, Jules Wilson, who had started swimming toward him to help. The rescue boats quickly swoop in and pick him up, where he finally holds up his broken leash to have a look.

In an interview back on shore, he’s trembling with adrenaline and says he thinks he may have punched the shark in the back as it thrashed beneath him. He’s clearly out of it, and just thankful to have escaped completely unscathed.

I can’t stop watching the footage, in part because I surf now. I’m not in South Africa, but I am in Northern California in a place known for its high density of adult Great Whites. Every time I get in the water, I know I’m in there with a bunch of apex predators I can’t see.

I do it anyway, because I love surfing and I love the wildlife. I haven’t spotted a shark yet (for sure – there was one time a woman called me in to shore because she swore there was one just behind me), but I have surfed with many birds, seals, sea lions, dolphins, and porpoises, and it’s been one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of my life.

I know that there’s a chance I may be bitten at some point, but I know that chance is outrageously small. Shark bites are rare, even here, and deaths are even rarer. There have only been 35 deaths due to sharks in the United States…since 1580 (until 2014).

Humans aren’t sharks’ preferred meal. We’re bony and stringy, not at all like nice plump seals. Of course, mistakes happen, especially when the human is looking particularly nonhuman, like with a wetsuit on and sitting on top of a surfboard.

There are many tales of surfers getting away from sharks with a nip taken out of them or out of their surfboard. But what’s particularly interesting in the case of Fanning is that he was completely unscathed. Not even his board was damaged. The only damage was a snapped leash (the rope that attaches a surfboard to the surfer’s ankle). That’s astonishing considering that the shark appeared to be right on top of him.

And that’s why I’m bristling a bit at the headlines proclaiming that Fanning was attacked by a shark. I can understand if he walks away feeling that way — after all, having an enormous set of teeth that close to you without your permission can feel like an attack no matter what they’re doing.

But it seems more likely to me, in my completely amateur opinion, that this shark wasn’t trying to “attack” at all — he may have been just curious, cruising in a wave and checking out what Fanning was up to, when he got tangled in the unseen leash and panicked. That would explain how all that thrashing around happened without Fanning or his board being bitten in any way.

So yes, it’s an absolutely jaw-dropping moment in surfing history, and both Fanning and Wilson, as well as the safety team, should be commended for keeping their cool and getting everyone out of the water safely. But let’s not jump to the conclusion that this was a shark that hunted down and attacked Fanning. That’s the kind of language that leads to more fear and misunderstanding of a fascinating creature, and that fear and misunderstanding is what leads to misguided efforts to keep humans safe, like murdering as many sharks as possible. Let’s not.

Seeking eminism.org button stories for a new zine

by emigrl

Friends! Have you bought/worn my buttons? Do you have funny, heartwarming, infuriating, etc. stories about them? Any good conversations or hookups my buttons facilitated? I want to make a zine of button stories. All contributors who are accepted will receive a free copy of the upcoming zine and maybe some special buttons.

Here’s my own example of a (true) button story: I was wearing a button that says “I (heart) MY CUNT” when I was shopping at a convenience store. A South Asian man at the register saw my button, and asked, “what does your button say?” “It says I LOVE MY CUNT,” I replied. “I love my country?” “No no, it says I LOVE MY CUNT.” “What does ‘cunt’ mean?” he asked. Realizing that he may not be familiar with the American vulgarity, I gave him a definition of the word that might have come from some scientific dictionary. “Oh,” he said, totally embarrassed, handing me the change without looking my direction. But as I walked out of the automatic door, he said “it’s good to love yourself.” So while he seemed very embarrassed, he got the message completely correctly.

I’m interested in hearing what sort of conversations my buttons sparked! I’ve been making buttons for 15 years, so I’m sure that there are many other stories that need to be shared. If you have any stories, please do email me at emi at eminism dot org. Please don’t feel intimidated: contact me if you are not sure if it’s worth printing. Thanks!

Bernie Sanders needs to care about #Blacklivesmatter because Republicans do not (Update: Bernie Sanders is a Nazi)

by Grung_e_Gene
In the Marine Corps my job was to focus on WET (Weather, Enemy, Terrain), the biggest enemy of America today is the Republican Party, on whom most of my posts focus.

But, it's important for the leaders of the Democratic Party or those who wish to secure the Democratic Presidential Nomination to remember not to take votes for granted.

#Blacklivesmatter descended upon Netroots Nation 15 and made a couple candidates, Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley uncomfortable. From all the reporting I've read O'Malley acquitted himself well, staying and speaking 1-on-1 with people, allowing them to voice their concerns. But, Bernie Sanders was apparently unprepared and could not deviate from his message about economic injustice and income inequality from which he ardently believes all injustices in the United States flow.

While, I tend to believe that more economic opportunities for Americans would help eliminate some of the problems we face, People of Color face another more dangerous barrier, which I do not. The frightening prospect that they will be killed by Police Officers or Stand Your Ground Gun Maniacs who adhere to the Conservative belief that all people of color are criminals.

All the white progressives posting and tweeting their irritation that Bernie Sanders was "ambushed" at the Netroots Nation conference and upset the GOP candidates aren't being subjected to similar tactics need to check themselves and understand #Blacklivesmatter isn't going to approach Republicans because they understand Republicans don't believe Black Lives Matter. Republicans are perfectly content with the situation as it exists today. Republicans are absolutely fine with Police Officers murdering People of Color.

But, Bernie Sanders is ostensibly running for the Democratic Presidential Nomination. As such, he needs to address the issues of Democrats, whom People of Color overwhelmingly, support and identify.

And if Bernie wants to win a nomination outside the comfy confines of his home state of Vermont he needs to be able to field hard questions and weather a few punches thrown his direction from the Left because the despicable vitriol, evil hatred, and vicious attacks from the Right during the campaign will dwarf this incident.
Update: And just like that the odious Kevin D. Williamson of the Conservative Cesspool NationalReview has labeled Bernie Sanders a National-Socialist.
In the Bernieverse, there’s a whole lot of nationalism mixed up in the socialism. He is, in fact, leading a national-socialist movement, which is a queasy and uncomfortable thing to write about a man who is the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland and whose family was murdered in the Holocaust. But there is no other way to characterize his views and his politics.
Williamson goes on in his putrid article to use the National Socialism tag an additional four times as he obliquely proclaims Senator Sanders is Adolf Hitler. And remember Bernie isn't even a real threat at this point and Conservatives are more than willing to go full HITLER! on him.
Now, of course I understand the Corporate Conservative Media can't wait to use this incident to ratfuck the Democratic Party because that's what they do. The Media serve the interests of the Plutocracy and that is the main opponent of Bernie Sanders.

In reality, though this incident is of little concern because Hillary Rodham Clinton is by far and away the front runner for the Democratic Nomination. But, the Left needs to ensure all the disparate voices of their collation are heard.

This is Racist

by Erik Loomis

11741007_10153050490230959_5864243958587207828_o

Activists in Denton, Texas continue the newfound attack on Confederate nostalgia.

Surveillance video shows that sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning, two individuals used large stencils and red spray paint to write the words “This is racist” near the top of the arch of the embattled monument on the south side of the Square. The duo then met a third person near the Square and the three fled on foot, the video shows.

Sheriff’s officials learned of the vandalism shortly before 9 a.m. Monday. County Commissioner Hugh Coleman said he was on the Square enjoying his morning coffee when he was told and took a look for himself.

“Whether you like something or not, there are better ways to express yourself,” Coleman said.

According to sheriff’s officials, the vandalism is a felony that carries a fine of up to $10,000 and from six months to two years in jail. Sheriff’s officials posted still images of the suspects on the office’s Facebook page and issued a news release asking for the public’s help in finding the suspects.

County personnel started working on the damage Monday morning, and by evening the monument still bore faded red marks.

Damage to the monument could exceed $50,000, according to Peggy Riddle, executive director of the Denton County Office of History and Culture. A conservation specialist will be called in if necessary, she said.

“This is not an easy shoot-it-with-graffiti-cleaner-and-go kind of thing,” Riddle said. “It leaches into the porous granite and marble. After that, we will have to do a type of special wax that conservators use so the monument will not look bleached-out in certain areas and all go back to being a cohesive color.”

I wonder how far the county will go with $50,000 fixes for a memorial commemorating those who committed treason to defend slavery if this happened again and again.

The Postmodern House That Changed the US Is Now for Sale

by Laura C. Mallonee

The Vanna Venturi House (All images courtesy Michael Colavita and Kurfiss Sotheby’s International Realty)

Want to own a house that changed the urban landscape of the United States? Pritzker-winning architect Robert Venturi’s Vanna Venturi House — arguably the first post-modernist building ever — has appeared on the market for the first time since 1973.

Venturi began designing the five-bedroom house in 1959, incorporating many of the ideas that he later laid out in his manifesto Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966). “Architects can no longer afford to be intimidated by the puritanically moral language of orthodox Modern architecture,” Ventur, then 36 years old, wrote. “I like elements which are hybrid rather than ‘pure,’ compromising rather than ‘clear,’ distorted rather than ‘straightforward.’ … I am for messy vitality over obvious unity.”

24

The Vanna Venturi House

Following Venturi’s preferences, the house contains many decorative, contradictory features. It has a stairway that goes nowhere, a fireplace much too big for the room, and an archway that serves no structural purpose — all clearly meant to give the bird to Modernism and the simplicity and functionalism it championed.

Interestingly, the sale from Kurfiss Sotheby’s International Realty comes at a time when Modernist architect is enjoying a widespread revival. You can’t thumb through the pages of an architectural magazine without seeing the flat roofs and floor-to-ceiling windows that were its hallmarks. And the depressing legacy of the postmodernist architecture that Venturi pioneered has become all too obvious — suburban tracts of ugly, neo-eclectic houses and uninspired office buildings.

25

The Vanna Venturi House

Still, the house has an incredible historic value. PBS once included it in its list of the top 10 buildings that changed America, ranking it among the likes of Thomas Jefferson’s Old Virginia State Capital, Louis Sullivan’s Wainwright Building, and Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram Building. In 1989, the American Institute of Architects gave the house the Twenty-five Year Award for being a project that has “stood the test of time,” and it was even featured on a 2005 United States postal stamp.

Traces

Design project by Dana Zelig explores concept of programmable materials, turning flat polystyrene sheets into three dimensional forms, designed with the Processing programming language:

I had chosen this subject in order to explore the intresection of graphic design and objects. In this context, I developed 12 processed-folding object lines, using digital tools and inkjet printing - inkjet printing is used on flat sheets to create materials that can form self-folding 3D structures upon exposure to light. These techniques are used systematically to explore spatial, structural & geometrical conditions, leading to the emergence of abstract prototypes. In this project, I study a new concept for a self-folding system.

#AllLivesMatter Is a Bullshit Hashtag and a Useless Phrase

by Rude One
When the Rude Pundit heard Donald Trump on Sen. John McCain's war hero status, his first thought was "Umm, John McCain isn't a war hero. He's a survivor of awful circumstances and a victim of a worthless war. But he's not a hero." See, the Rude Pundit doesn't subscribe to the Everyone-Gets-A-Trophy view of heroism. You're not a hero just because you're a cop or a firefighter. You're not a hero just because you're a soldier. You're a hero if you do something heroic. And, sorry, doing the requirements of your job (like, you know, fighting a fire) doesn't make you a hero. It makes you a decent employee. The bar should be high for a hero, even in a job that requires a certain amount of courage to begin with. You broke through a door to save a child and a puppy from a raging inferno? Well, yeah, that's pretty heroic. You stood outside and held a hose? Awesome job, glad you're doing it, but not exactly herculean.

The defensive response to the poignant Black Lives Matter movement, which started in the wake of the ongoing string of deaths of black men and women at the hands of police (for the most part, since it began after the Trayvon Martin murder), was the absolutely worthless All Lives Matter (or #AllLivesMatter). First of all, it's impossible. The Rude Pundit can name about fifty people off the top of his head whose lives don't matter, starting with the presidential candidate mentioned at the top of this post. He doesn't wish harm on most of them. He wouldn't do anything to harm any of them. But, really, and c'mon, you can look around the room you're in and know in your heart that at least a few people there have lives that don't matter. That's not even getting into your random serial killers and dictators, whose lives, we should be able to agree, don't matter. Mostly, though, it is an utterly meaningless phrase because it has no basis in reality. (Yes, we can get into a whole ontological argument about the meaning of "matter," but, for the sake of this argument, hell, just say, "Matter to the world.")

Black Lives Matter (or #BlackLivesMatter, to hashtag the shit out of this post) matters because it is a statement of defiance against a tide of evidence and history that, in general, the bodies and being of African Americans must be crushed, killed, wiped out. The phrase doesn't naively imply that all black lives matter. It is an assertion of worth and value for the very existence of black people in the United States against a hegemonic whiteness that insidiously and systematically imprisons, impoverishes, and kills black Americans. The phrase carves out worth against worthlessness. It is confrontational because of its implication that black lives do not, in fact, matter, that they are not equal to white lives. #AllLivesMatter waters it down into feel-good nonsense.

The reason for this discussion is the dismay on the left (and the giddy finger-pointing on the right) to the disruption of Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Martin O'Malley at the Netroots Nation conference this weekend. During each of their appearances, they were confronted by protesters in the audience, including Black Lives Matter co-founder Patrisse Cullors, who, along with Tia Oso, was invited on stage by O'Malley. The former mayor of Baltimore handled it particularly badly when he said, "“Black lives matter, white lives matter, all lives matter." Sanders essentially told the protesters to shut up and let him speak.

Now, you can argue all you like about whether or not cutting off others' speech with your speech is free speech. And no one has to listen to anyone. Also, let's hope that these same protesters and more are willing to shout out at forums for Scott Walker and Jeb Bush. For his part, the Rude Pundit loves it when disorganization breaks out in your nicely-scheduled conference because some people want to be heard. He loves it when others are upset about it. He loves reality over polished bullshit. (He has avoided Netroots because, in general, he avoids all conferences, professional and political. The mixture of insider circle jerking and desperate wannabe-ing just doesn't really jibe with the whole "drink until you wake up in pants you don't recognize" ethos under which he lives.)

When you get angry, you don't go to someone else's house and punch a hole in their wall. You don't throw plates in your neighbor's kitchen. You take it out on yourself and your home. You rage against that which you think you have control over. Of course the protesters had to call out the old white guys in the room who presumed to lead them. Of course those old white guys needed to hear what they had to say. Of course they were enraged by the responses. That's because #BlackLivesMatter has life and death as its stakes. There is no other way to react.

“Truth Is Beauty, but Tacky Is Forever”

A 55-foot-tall steel mesh sculpture of a naked, dancing woman that lights up with 3,000 LED bulbs dazzled Burning Man attendees in 2013, but residents of Bay Area city San Leandro — where it will reside permanently as of next summer — are split on its artistic merits.

Originally built for the annual desert festival, “Truth Is Beauty” was conceived by California-based artist Marco Cochrane as part of his Bliss Project, a three-work series he created in response to the rape of his childhood friend to encourage female empowerment and self-acceptance. The statue will find a permanent home at San Leandro’s new tech campus, as ABC7 reported, a move that its developer, Westlake Urban, sees as an “opportunity to share the message … in an environment that encourages the success of women in technology.”

The developer added in a statement: “‘Truth Is Beauty’ tells a powerful story, and we hope it will inspire and ignite conversations about the possibility of a world where women are free from violence and are free to fully express themselves.”

City planners had required that the developer of the new, 7.3-acre campus — which promotes the sculpture on its home page — dedicate 1% of its budget to public art. San Leandro’s first Chief Innovation Officer Deborah Acosta, who called the sculpture “beautiful,” cited art as “the underlying base for anytime you’re doing innovation.” However, some locals find the work’s nudity tasteless and overly prominent considering the intended site, and several expressed their disapproval through good, old-fashioned epistolary commentary, delivered to the local San Leandro Times.

Artist Marco Cochrane talking about “Truth Is Beauty” (photo via Josh Keppel/Facebook)

“Truth is beauty, but tacky is forever,” 45-year resident Gerry Isham poetically noted. “I don’t think she is porn, but I don’t think she fits into the art category, maybe craft.” He offered two possible solutions: “OSIsoft should build a 56-foot atrium for ‘Truth Is Beauty’ to reside in, or send her to live in Las Vegas where she would be right at home.”

Another reader, one Peter Ambrosia who considers the statue inappropriate for a public setting, had a suggestion of a very different nature. “If the lady is going to just stand there all day,” Ambrosia wrote, “I propose that the Burning Man artist be commissioned to create her a male partner, modeled after California’s ex-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime, with all anatomical parts in place (just like the woman). Should make a dazzling light show.”

One 40-year resident, meanwhile, welcomed the news of the statue’s arrival, begging the city and developer to “not be swayed by those who do not appreciate art.” It’s likely that such critics of “Truth Is Beauty” are not familiar with the story behind the graceful sculpture, which garnered praise when Cochrane first unveiled it in the stunning landscape of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. Rolling Stone described it as “one of the most beautiful and striking art installations on the playa at Burning Man 2013,” a sentiment echoed by many others.

Despite the bursts of local opposition, San Leandro Tech Campus intends to proceed with the sculpture’s installation next year. Plans to pair “Truth Is Beauty” with an anatomically accurate, gun-toting Schwarzenegger in the nude have yet to be announced.

Today In Rape Apologia, Ayn Rand Edition

by Scott Lemieux

keefner-ayn-rand

Via Jill Filipovic, Milo Yiannopoulos describes the inevitable rape scene in the posthumously published Ayn Rand pseudo-novel:

Another reason people get upset about Rand and sex is that her ideal intimate encounters always seem to be pseudo-rapes. Naturally, the sex-negative, authoritarian modern feminist movement gasps in shock at the suggestion that consensually ambiguous encounters might be thrilling for both parties.

It’s been a while, but I don’t recall anything “ambiguous” about the rape scenes in the previous novels. As for the new old one, Filipovic has the text right here:

“She lay dressed, on his bed, and her one hand hung over the edge, white in the darkness. She jerked her head up and he could guess her eyes on the pale blot of her face. She felt his teeth sinking into her hand. She struggled ferociously, her muscles tense, hard, sharp as an animal’s. ‘Keep still,’ he whispered hoarsely into her throat. ‘You can’t call for help!’
She did not call for help…

That word “ambiguity,” I do not think it etc. The fact the review starts off with logic on a par with “you call yourself a feminist, yet you disagree with Phyllis Schafly, make up your mind!” As Filipovic goes on to say:

Perhaps Rand’s largest talent lies not in her status as the mother of Objectivism, but her ability to play the Cool Girl, even posthumously, in the minds of men whose view of women is colored by both desire and revulsion. You’re not a misogynist if your hero is Ayn Rand, and Ayn Rand is the ultimate shield and sword for the kind of arguments regularly entered into by the kind of man who worships Ayn Rand. Ayn Rand wouldn’t care that you called her a slut on the internet. Ayn Rand doesn’t think it’s rape if you hold her down and shove your dick in her without permission. Ayn Rand probably drinks whiskey and plays beer pong and has always had way more guy friends because girls cause so much drama. She’s the Sociopathic Pixie Dream Girl.

Rand’s admiration for murderers also seems relevant here…

Blast From the Past: Athena Scalzi, Age Seven, Addresses Scott Westerfeld on the Subject of Pluto

by John Scalzi

Context: In 2006, Pluto was demoted from being a planet to being a dwarf planet, a move that many, including notable YA author (and personal friend) Scott Westerfeld, thought was a good move, because he and they are terrible people. When my daughter, then age seven, heard that Scott Westerfeld — her friend Scott! Who she liked! — was a “Pluto Hayta,” she felt compelled to make a video, both asking him why he held such hatred for our system’s smallest planet, and then showing him the consequences of such wanton contempt.

For years the video was unavailable, because I made it and displayed it in an AOL video service that is now (like pretty much everything else AOL) consigned to the bit-bin of history. But today, miracle of miracles, I discovered the Internet Archive had made a copy of the video file. I downloaded, it converted it, and put it on YouTube.

And so, here it is, and well timed for the recent Plutomania: My daughter’s 2006 video to Scott “Pluto Hayta” Westerfeld. Enjoy.

And yes, her t-shirt in the video does indeed say “I Have Issues.” She did! With Scott!

Naturally, I showed it to Athena (now aged sixteen) before I posted it. She thought it was adorable. And, well. Yes. Yes, it is.

The biggest irony? Pluto now has a feature on its surface named for Cthulhu. My daughter was prophetic, at age seven, she was.

(P.S.: Here’s Scott’s response to the video at the time. Still wrong! History shall judge him. And all who led us down this dark path.)

Review: The Uncut #1 Dildo from Tantus

by kittystryker

Living in the UK for years, I gained an appreciation for uncircumcised penises, eventually preferring them for multiple reasons over circumcised ones. But almost every dildo that’s penis shaped is cut, something that I grew to reluctantly accept even if it wasn’t exactly my taste.

As soon as I saw the photos of the Uncut dildos Tantus was making, I was obsessed.

There are two designs currently, the #1, which is almost 7 1/2″ of insertable length, but a reasonable thickness at 1 3/4″ diameter, and the #2, which is almost an inch shorter at just under 6 1/2″ and just a teensy bit more slender at 1.6″ around.

Here I review the #1, because as a fat woman the extra inch is particularly useful for strap on play and I had a date with a new sexy friend who wanted to give it a go!

First, mine is named Big Tom. I can’t explain the Tom part, but it is definitely big. Not in terms of width (and if anything I hope Tantus makes a wider version of this length!) but it’s definitely a dick that will hang out the bottom of your short shorts. I found it to be a little slim for my cunt, but am imagining that in my slow working up to anal play, this may well be my perfect toy for it when the time comes!

The Uncuts are dual density, which means they have a solid core but a slightly softer outside. This was a godsend for me, as I found the head of the cock to actually feel nice against my cervix as opposed to trying to batter a hole into it. It also made it really really fun to have in my mouth! The base felt good and was sturdy enough for some solid fucking without either slipping out or bruising my pelvis.

They’re silicone, so sterilizable, which is great of course. And the Uncut plays nicely with water based lubes- if you wash it decently afterwards you could also likely use a water/silicone mix without too much trouble. It’s available in 3 colours- cream, cocoa, and mocha.

I really enjoyed my Uncut #1 and can’t wait for more in this series! Thank you Tantus for sending me this dream dick in exchange for an honest and fair review.

In 2k15 America, Black people now have to proactively and publicly declare for the record that we, like anyone else, would neither lynch ourselves nor commit suicide while in police custody.

This is (apparently) necessary now because if we are caught being human and - even once - state that we were even momentarily sad or depressed, that single statement alone can and will be used against us by corporate media and the police to blame us for our own murders…at the hands of the police.

This Tree Created by Artist Sam Van Aken Grows 40 Different Kinds of Fruit

by Christopher Jobson

In 2008, while locating specimens to create a multi-colored blossom tree for an art project, artist and Syracuse University art professor Sam Van Aken had the opportunity to acquire a 3-acre orchard from the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station. Fascinated by the practice of grafting trees since a young age, Aken began to graft buds from the 250 heritage varieties found on the orchard onto a single stock tree.

To create the Frankenstein-esque tree, Aken worked with stone fruits (fruits with pits) like peaches, plums, apricots, almonds, and nectarines. Over the course of five years he successfully grafted dozens of plants onto the same tree, and with that, the Tree of 40 Fruit project was born. Because of their similarities, all 40 fruits bud, bloom and fruit in near perfect unison.

Aken has since grafted at least 16 different “Trees of 40 Fruit” which are planted across the U.S. in places like Newton, Massachusetts; Pound Ridge, New York; Short Hills, New Jersey; Bentonville, Arkansas; and San Jose, California. Each tree is specific to its environment, using both local and antique varieties.

National Geographic recently met up with Aken to interview the artist about how he makes each tree. You can hear him talk about the project in the video above. (via Digg)

by Christopher Jobson

pluto-through-the-years

You’ve probably had your fill of Pluto news for the week, but this is still worth a quick glance. NASA released this fun 17-frame GIF showing the best images of Pluto obtained at the time, spanning Clyde Tombaugh’s first shot of the [dwarf] planet at the Lowell Observatory in 1930, up through a series of shots obtained by New Horizons over the last decade. You can see a full listing of image credits here. (via Explore)
