The Dutch team captain Robin van Persie’s early contender for the best goal of this year’s World Cup tournament has sparked a photoshop meme and a planking-esque photo trend on Twitter.

In protest against the Brazilian government’s lavish spending on this year’s World Cup games, members of the hacktivist group Anonymous have launched DDoS attacks against dozens of e-government sites and sponsors of the event.

The arid deserts of the Colorado Plateau in the American West are usually barren, but on rare occasions of rainfall, the landscape can bloom with wildflowers. Photographer Guy Tal, who specializes in the landscapes of the Colorado Plateau, documents the rare desert blooms in stunning photographs. According to Tal, the scorpionweed and bee plant flowers shown in the images bloom for just a few days before disappearing for periods lasting several years. Rik Mayall, the British comedian, writer and actor best known as Rick, the “pompous would-be anarchist” in the offbeat 1980′s sitcom The Young Ones, died at his home in London at the age of 56. He is survived by his wife and three children.
