so, i’m an old lady. when i was a kid (and the start of that sentence proves i’m an old lady)… when i was a kid, living in LA in the 70’s, we had these fantastic local channels that played really esoteric and/or vintage (read: inexpensive) movies to fill their time.

this is where i learned to love the hope/crosby “road” movies, danny kaye films and the “horror” movies of vincent price.

but i also gained a love of low-budget foreign films, especially poorly dubbed monster movies from japan.

by far my favorite of these was “matango“… or as it’s lovingly (and more accurately) known in the US “attack of the mushroom people”. i’ve provided the trailer above to illustrate how epic, how monumental, how totally frickin’ awesome this piece of classic cinema truly is.

unappreciated in its own time, the makers of “matango” may have to console themselves with knowing that a lone, yet disturbingly devoted, 7-year old knew their true brilliance.

corporate job placement moocs?

i work in higher ed IT and there’s this “disruptive technology” thing going on called moocs (massive open online courses). i’m inundated with daily speculation about how moocs will dramatically change education as we know it and speculation about the various schemes for monetizing the courses.

but this thought just occurred to me:

what if… companies, as part of their recruitment and hiring processes, created moocs that you paid to (optionally?) take as part of the application process. applicants pay to earn mooc badges in order to be taken seriously for positions.

the companies earn a profit from your interest as a candidate, and you demonstrate skills/abilities to increase your viability/visibility.

this is heavily weighted toward the company’s interests, and could (would) become problematic pretty quickly for a variety of reasons, but it occurred to me that… given the financial upside for companies… it could happen.

and i just realized i’ve become a part of the speculation! *sigh*

I've done a fair bit of research into trans issues while writing Claire, and probably the saddest and most frightening thing is how often trans people are victims of violence. As a straight white dude it is something entirely outside my experience, and learning about it has been sobering. Stay safe and be kind to each other, everybody.

(Wow, that was a pretty depressing newspost)

Absolutely brilliant. I really like the Dove campaigns.

Dove hired a forensic artist to draw how women see themselves versus how others see them - the results are moving.

DRUMS: A Ridiculous Video in Which there is Drumming video art drumming

It’s Friday and I have no idea what’s going on here but I kind of love it. Shot and edited by Simon Panrucker, starring his nieces. If you liked this you will most definitely like Oona Rocks.

Update: I should have added that these videos were most likely inspired by the work of Lasse Gjertsen who seems to have removed most of his videos from YouTube but you can still see a low-res version of Hyperactive. (thnx, everyone)

The BioniCopter: A Robotic Dragonfly by Festo

The BioniCopter: A Robotic Dragonfly by Festo robotics insects flight

The BioniCopter is the latest robotic marvel from German technology firm Festo, a company known for the creation of numerous devices that mimic wildlife including birds, jellyfish and penguins. Meant to mimic the motions of a dragonfly the BioniCopter is capable of flying in all directions including backward, and can also hover indefinitely in the same spot. Via Festo:

In addition to control of the shared flapping frequency and twisting of the individual wings, each of the four wings also features an amplitude controller. The tilt of the wings determines the direction of thrust. Amplitude control allows the intensity of the thrust to be regulated. When combined, the remote-controlled dragonfly can assume almost any position in space. [... ] This unique way of flying is made possible by the lightweight construction and the integration of functions: components such as sensors, actuators and mechanical components as well as open- and closed-loop control systems are installed in a very tight space and adapted to one another. With the remote-controlled dragonfly, Festo demonstrates wireless real-time communication, a continuous exchange of information, as well as the ability to combine different sensor evaluations and identify complex events and critical states.

While many other remote-controlled dragonflies exist, many of which are available commercially as toys, the BioniCopter is the first device that can mimic the function of a plane, a helicopter, and a glider all in the same device. Learn more at Festo. (via rhumboogie)

Sky Art: Thomas Lamadieu Illustrates in the Sky Between Buildings

For anyone who has lived or visited a narrow courtyard wrapped in buildings it can sometimes be a claustrophobic space with the sky limited in all directions, but the strange geometric gaps formed by the surrounding architecture are often fun to photograph. For instance art director Lisa Rienermann (scroll right) became famous for her award-winning alphabet formed from letters spotted in the space between buildings. However French artist Thomas Lamadieu instead used the constraints as inspiration for his imaginative illustration series Sky Art, where the artist drew within the narrow confines of rooftops and tiny slices of sky to create some pretty wild imagery. It would be fun to see different artists interpretations of the exact same spot. (via my modern met)

The folks over at Redbull (previously for cranberry bog wakeboarding) are currently holding a photography competition called Red Bull Illume which is billed as “the world’s premier international photography competition dedicated to the world of action and adventure sports.” One of the latest entries to the competition is this awesome set of photos captured by photographer and light painter Patrick Rochon in conjunction with Snap! Orlando who brought on a team of wakeboarders including Mike Dowdy, Adam Errington, and Dallas Friday. The trio rode special wakeboards affixed with LEDs designed by Snap! while Rochon shot from the shore. You can read more over on Redbull Illume, and for more illuminated hijinx check out L.E.D Wakeboarding by Jacob Sutton. (via we seek)
