Movable Footbridge in Paddington, London Opens and Closes Like a Fan
Photographs by Edmund Sumner & Peter Cook, Courtesy Knight Architects
London bridge is not falling down. It’s folding up. Taking their cue from the way a Japanese hand fan folds open, Knight Architects have completed a bridge in London that is both simple and spectacular. In collaboration with structural engineers AKT II, the bridge experts installed 5 steel beams that open and close in sequence, rising to different angles using hydraulic jacks and assisted by counterweights. “Beautiful, efficient bridge design should satisfy both artistic and scientific analysis to be visually legible and structurally truthful,” say the architects. The moving footbridge bridge is located in Paddington, London and spans the 20-meter width of the Grand Union Canal. (via Dezeen)

Sossusvlei of Namibia
Cooper Griggsstunning photos
With a combination of gigantic red dunes, dead trees, and dried-up marshes, Sossusvlei’s landscapes are distinctly like no other. This African destination hosts curvaceous land shadows and striking terrain that begs to be photographed.
“Sossusvlei in Namibia is probably one of the most photographed places in Namibia. I was there too, and this is my impression of this beautiful place…That day I barely held my camera, I walked for 7km,in dry heat, I had very little water and it was +45 C with no wind! The hottest weather I had ever experienced. My wife was with me and she felt sick, from the heat. I couldn’t spend more than few minutes in the valley, for those reasons. Well I am glad I have seen it.”
“Sossusvlei is one of the oldest and driest ecosystems on earth.’Vlei’ is the Afrikaans word for a shallow depression filled with water (well, a depression that might sometimes be filled with water!), and the name ‘Sossusvlei’ should strictly only be applied to the pan that lies at the place where the dunes close in, preventing the waters of the Tsauchab River from flowing any further — that is, on the rare occasions that the river does flow as far as this. During exceptional rainy seasons, Sossusvlei may fill with water, causing Namibians to flock there to witness the grand sight, but normally it is bone dry. This particular ‘vlei’ is actually a more-or-less circular, hard-surfaced depression that is almost entirely surrounded by sharp-edged dunes, beyond which lies a formidable sea of rolling sand, stretching in unbroken immensity all the way to the coast. However, the name ‘Sossusvlei’ nowadays applies to the whole area — an area that encompasses the great plain of the Tsauchab River together with the red dunes that march along like giant sentinels to south and north of the plain.” – I. Yoga Joes: Plastic Green Soldiers Practicing Yoga
We’ve seen plenty of modern takes on classic green army guys as of late, from skateboarders and surfers over at Toy Boarders, to an array of plastic breakdancing people. Yoga practitioner and entrepreneur Dan Abramson now joins the fray with Yoga Joes, a collection of green army figures doing popular yoga poses like the warrior, cobra, and downward-facing dog. The project is currently funding on Kickstarter and sets should ship in time for Christmas. Hurry, there’s only 4 days left. (via FastCo, My Modern Met)
Polyphonic Overtone Singing Demonstrated by Anna-Maria Hefele
Cooper GriggsShe makes the devil's music! Witchery I tells ya!
This is a great video of polyphonic overtone singing by Anna-Maria Hefele, where she precisely demonstrates the almost inhuman ability to create a harmony of two notes at a time using a single breath. Overtone singing is the same technique used by Tuvan (or Mongolian) throat singers of which there are several other great videos to watch on YouTube. Also check out this demo by Alex Glenfield, or this clip lifted from I’m not sure where. (via Stellar)
