New Word of the Day: dataSTICKIES

by Radhika Seth

YD’s resident Design Strategist Hideshi Hamaguchi, who also happens to be the innovator of the USB Stick will be pleasantly surprised to see his vision take on such a productive form. dataSTICKIES are the next generation of data portability. They are graphene-based flash drives that replace USB data drives.

dataSTICKIES can be carried like a stack of sticky-back notes; each of them can be simply peeled from the stack and stuck anywhere on the ODTS (Optical Data Transfer Surface), which is a panel that can be attached to the front surface of devices like computer screens, televisions, music systems, etc. The device uses a special conductive adhesive that sticks them to the ODTS and serves as the medium that transfers the data.

Specs:

  • The special low-tack, pressure-sensitive adhesive is capable of being reused without leaving marks like a repositionable note.
  • When the dataSTICKIES are being read by the device, their edges light up.
  • The dataSTICKIES come in various colors and patterns that make data segregation according to type and size easier.
  • They can be stacked and used together for increased capacity, which also enables carrying them together.
  • The top surface can be written on.
  • If a file needs to be given to someone, a single sticky can be handed out rather than an entire pen drive.
  • The dataSTICKIES are not easily lost because they can be stuck down on any object.

dataSTICKIES is a 2013 Red Dot Award: Design Concept winner.

Famous movie quotes as charts

by Nathan Yau

AFI movie quotes

In celebration of their 100-year anniversary, the American Film Institute selected the 100 most memorable quotes from American cinema, and a few years ago, for kicks and giggles, I put the first eight quotes into chart form. I planned to chartify all 100, but I got distracted.

Lately though, finishing what I started became my distraction. So here it is: the 100 most memorable quotes in chart form and I can finally put it to rest. See the big version for more detail.

Also available in print.

The Sound of Taste: Slow-Motion Spice Bag Explosions Synchronized with Music

by Christopher Jobson

The Sound of Taste: Slow Motion Spice Bag Explosions Synchronized with Music slow motion food advertising

Just a few weeks ago we shared Sarah Schoenfeld’s visual interpretation of recreational drugs, and today we have a cinematic interpretation of taste courtesy of filmmaker Chris Cairns titled the Sound of Taste. Created as a commercial for Schwartz Flavour Shots, the slow-motion video pairs musician MJ Cole and pyrotechnician Paul Mann in a carefully orchestrated firework show of exploding spices, what they describe as a “sonic flavorscape.” You can learn more about how it came together and watch a behind-the-scenes clip over on PetaPixel.

Solihull, 2013. Progress shot of a past experiment in inks.

Using a wide variety of canvases including railroad blueprints, star charts, geological and street maps, Welsh artist Ed Fairburn (previously here and here) uses addative and subtractive techniques to create portraits that seem pefectly integrated with the topography of streets, mountains and rivers. It’s been almost a year since we last checked in with Fairburn whose process and approach to creating these stunning portraits continues to evolve. One of his most striking methods is to carefully follow map contours with a pen creating rows of lines that vary by width to create individual forms and shadows. The final portraits are so entwined with the map, it becomes hard to imagine one existing without the other.

You can see Fairburn’s work for yourself at Mike Wright Gallery in Denver, Colorado and he also has prints available here.

Ephemeral Rays: Hundreds of Suspended Light Bulbs in a UK Dockyard multiples light installation

Installed earlier this summer at the Chatham Historic Dockyard, Ephemeral Rays is a new work by artist Charlotte Smith. The piece consists of several hundred lights on filaments that fill a large window of a galvanizing shop. Of the work she shares:

Originally installed at Chatham Historic Dockyard, Ephemeral Rays depicted the volume of a fleeting ray of light beaming through a window of the Galvanising Shop. Reinstalled at Turner Contemporary the work evolved into a new form; drawing on the stunning expanse of sea and sky, the infinite horizon line was the focal point of the composition.

You can see much more over on her website. (via My Modern Met, Lustik)
