The Floating Temple: How to Lift a Seven Million Pound, 112-year-old Building
Something’s up in Provo, Utah and it weighs around seven million pounds. It’s the 112-year-old exterior of the Provo Tabernacle that was severely damaged in a 2010 fire but has since been saved by the LDS church so it can be converted into a temple. Engineers first gutted the damaged interior and then supported the exterior walls with special scaffolding as they dug down to create space for a two story basement, so in actuality the building hasn’t even moved. The entire structure is now on stilts some 40 feet in the air and from some angles appears to be floating above ground, such as in the first photograph above provided by Brian Hansen. Additional photos courtesy the LDS Newsroom.
Creatively Defaced Streetscapes
As we saw in "Creatively Defaced Textbooks," it's easy enough to create drawings in a book that you take home with you, or hide behind the back of the student in front of you. It's a much greater challenge to deface—or upgrade, depending on your point of view—a streetscape, where your artistic talents may draw the unwanted attention of the authorities.
But, you know, nothing stops art.

Wadi Al-Salaam: The Largest Cemetery in The World via Amusing Planet
Wadi us-Salaam, which literally means the Valley of Peace, is an Islamic cemetery located in the holy city of Najaf, Iraq. The cemetery covers an area of 1485.5 acres and contains millions of bodies, making it one of the strongest contender for the title of the largest graveyard on earth. Najaf itself is one of Iraq’s biggest cities, with a population of nearly 600,000. But the adjoining city of the dead holds the remains of millions, stretching for up to 10km along the valley. Wadi Al-Salam cemetery is also the only cemetery in the world where the process of burial is still continuing to day since more than 1,400 years.
Quick Mountain Tutorial!
Today, a quick one on isometric pen and ink mountain ranges.
Draw in the ridgeline of the mountains. Add bumps and wiggles and allow the path to wander.
With the ridgeline in place, take lines off from the angles in the ridgeline. Basically anywhere your ridgeline changes direction you can draw a ridge ciming off. These should be steeper near the crest and smooth out towards the edge to show sharp peaks.
Here I’ve laid in shadows with some basic hatching. Use lines far apart for a lighter shadow and closer hatching for deeper shadows. Keep your deeper shadows to the top of the ridgeline (where it’s steepest) and in valleys and crevasses. You can also skip the hatching and import the lineart into a digital editing program and shade your mountains there.

The 9th Contest of Afro-Hairdressers
