Modern Motorcycles: 15 Super-Sleek Custom Rides

by Steph
[ By Steph in Technology & Vehicles & Mods. ]

modern motorcycles eve2

With their streamlined silhouettes, exposed mechanical parts, high-end detailing and powerful motors, these 15 modern motorcycle designs represent a new era of aesthetics in the industry, even when they’re customs built on the bases of classic bikes.

Akrapovic Full Moon

Looking unlike any motorcycle we’ve ever seen on the streets, the Akrapovic Full Moon motorcycle concept features a massive 30-inch aluminum and carbon front wheel and a sculpted, aerodynamic metal sheet frame that envelops the rear wheel. Hydraulic suspension keeps the bike upright when it’s parked, and automated steering keeps the handlebars looking sleek.

BMW Apollo Streamliner

A combination of traditional styling and futuristic looks keeps this concept by industrial designer Mehmet Doruk Erdem firmly rooted within the BMW brand, while bringing it into this century and beyond. Designed for speed rather than everyday use, the Apollo Streamliner features a pointed front end to reduce wind drag on the rider.

Rectilinear T005 Cross

In contrast to the sleeker curvilinear designs, the Thrive Motorcycle T005 Cross goes for a chunky rectilinear look. The whole thing is actually a modified 1984 Yamaha – the designers stripped it down, fitted it with off-road tires and added a custom body made of sheet aluminum, updated for the modern era with a smartphone slot.

Bandit9 Bishop

Another custom modification takes a Honda Supersport and transforms it into a minimalist design enthusiast’s dream, with wood burl side panels contrasting with the steel unibody. Bandit9 released only nine models of this bike, with a 90cc or 125cc engine.

Bandit9 Eve

Bandit9 also used a 1967 Honda SS bike as the basis of a custom design, pairing it with fashions from Konstantin Kofta in this editorial for a futuristic effect. The bullet-like chrome-finished unibody puts the focus on the exposed mechanical parts.

Better Than a Calculator: This App Solves Math Problems Using Your Phone's Camera

I was the worst type of high school student: The kind that gets dumber over time rather than showing improvement. I aced Geometry, passed Algebra, started bombing in Trig. By the time we got to Calculus, I did so poorly that I probably made the students around me worse by sheer osmosis.

Geometry is (or at least was) invaluable to an industrial designer doing CAD work, and I still use algebra on a regular basis to figure things out when I'm buying studio supplies in bulk or making stuff. And I just found out there's a free app that can help you with algebra. It's pretty cool, you don't even have to type stuff into your phone:

Called PhotoMath, it's been around for at least a year for iDevices, and earlier this year they released an Android version. Reviews are mostly positive, and as you'd expect, some high school students are using it to cheat. Another reviewer makes this comment:

Newest update says it supports trigonometry problems but it doesn't :/ that part completely fails.

Every time I see the words "trigonometry" and "fails" in the same sentence, I still feel a little twinge.

Hyundai patent outlines speed bump detection system

by Shane McGlaun
hyundai-bump-1I'd wager at one time or another most of us have seen cars that have been customized by their owners or are so low from the factory that speed bumps can be a big issue. Even more annoying are larger speed bumps that are the same color as the road around them allowing them to blend into the surroundings to … Continue reading

Cassini sees 3 beautiful crescent moons from Saturn

by Miriam Kramer

Sure, you've seen a crescent moon from Earth, but I bet you've never seen three.

NASA's Cassini spacecraft captured not just one but three crescent moons in a single photo. Saturn's moons Titan, Mimas and Rhea all make an appearance in the new image released by NASA Monday

Although each of the three moons looks like a crescent from Cassini's perspective, Titan, Mimas and Rhea do have distinctive differences even when seen in this phase.

"Titan, the largest moon in this image, appears fuzzy because we only see its cloud layers," NASA said in a statement. "And because Titan's atmosphere refracts light around the moon, its crescent 'wraps' just a little further around the moon than it would on an airless body." Read more...

These Ants Took Over The World, And We Just Noticed

by Esther Inglis-Arkell

We know ants form large colonies. In 2002, we realized one specific kind of ant formed supercolonies. And then, in 2010, we learned that they had formed a global colony— and that, without even know it, we had helped them do it.

These Lights In The Sky Are So Strange, They Look Like Alien Signals

by Vincze Miklós

Don’t worry, there is nothing unnatural about that strange arcs of light you’ll sometimes see in the sky. Ice halos are a very natural atmospheric phenomenon, created when ice crystals suspended in the sky reflect and refract sunlight. But they truly are an impressive sight.

While some might argue that there are better ways to wash one’s...

A. Kachmar

This post keeps showing up under commented, but no comments are showing. Argghh

While some might argue that there are better ways to wash one’s face and hands than with a reminder of our mortality and the transient nature of life in general, we think these beautifully macabre bars of skull-shaped soap are pretty awesome. They’re called the Art of Dying soaps and they’re the work of Monterey, CA-based artist Eden Gorgós.

Eden just launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund the creation of sets of skull-shaped Memento Mori soaps and lotions and the more ornate Vanitas bar soaps. All of these soaps and lotions are handmade in small batches using resin molds that Gorgós sculpted herself.

“Soaps are made with coconut oil, colored with natural clay/herb/flower, and formulated to moisturize without sacrificing lather. All but the white soaps are scented with a combination of essential oils. Solid lotions and unisex cologne are made with shea butter, beeswax, and calendula, arnica flower, and chamomile infused almond oil (and scented with a blend of essential oils).”

These delightfully creepy personal cleansing products come in a variety of tantalizing scents such as Roseclove, Lavender Musk, Sagebirch, Rosemarymint, Lemonginger, and Birch-Mint.

Visit the Art of Dying soaps Kickstarter page for additional photos and information.

Trump's announcement - reduced to its essence

by Mark Frauenfelder

The entertainment value of a President Trump, especially as seen through the truth-enchancing eye of Vic Berger, would greatly mitigate the unassailable fact that his policies would turn our planet into a smoldering, gutted husk.

Raccoon breaks into an alcohol warehouse and gets super drunk

by Lindsey Robertson
Drunk-raccoon
Feed-twFeed-fb

This raccoon was trying to be sneaky and act like he totally belongs in an alcohol warehouse — unfortunately, he made the mistake of imbibing. And then stumbling around drunkenly

Raccoon, this isn't the way to solve your problems. Yeah, maybe garbage isn't as accessible as it used to be. Maybe people don't leave their dog's food outside anymore. But you're better than this. You don't need to drink to forget

Here's hoping that the furry bandit found a nice burrow where he could sleep it off.

Untwisted Ropes Tacked to Gallery Walls Appear to Sprout like Trees

by Christopher Jobson

ciclotrama-1

Brazil-based artist duo Janaina Mello and Daniel Landini of Mello + Landini create tree-like installations with untwisted ropes fastened to the walls of galleries. Titled Ciclotramas, the artworks have gone through 17 different iterations since 2010, each involving some form of ropes that seem to branch through the air and splay onto surfaces like fractals or a network of neurons. The artists say they are interested in creating metaphors surrounding organic structures composed of both interrelated and independent parts, as well as the passage of time, and the “choreography of intertwining lines.” You can follow more of their work here. 555 Million Years Ago, There Were Creatures That Looked Like You

by Esther Inglis-Arkell

Nothing looked exactly like you 555 million years ago, but that’s when life emerged that looked like you in one crucial respect. What’s the most basic thing that you share with some creatures and not others? Brains? Lungs? Red blood cells? Nope. It’s that you’re bilateral. You have the ability to be cut into two identical sections, along one and one line only.
