German start-up Skypak has created a truly unique collection of mobile furniture brought down from the sky! Using old airplane trolleys, Skypak designed their “La Barrique” cart as a streamlined piece featuring carefully selected reclaimed wood from wine and whiskey barrels gathered from well-known chateaus and famous distilleries across Europe. Each one-of-a-kind cart is handcrafted in Germany.

One With the Desert: Staggering Residence in Joshua Tree, California [Video]

want. so bond chic.

design residence Kendrick Bangs Kellogg One With the Desert: Staggering Residence in Joshua Tree, California [Video]This staggering residence in Joshua Tree, California is an example of creative modern architecture at its best. With a concept initially carried out by architect Kendrick Bangs Kellogg, the Organic Modern Estate seems one with the desert. Work on this architecture gem started in year 1988. Even though it was finished in 1993, interior designer John Vugrin spent several years making “tweaks.” The result is a genuine looking dwelling in concrete, steel, glass, and copper, perfectly blending in with its rocky landscape.
architecture residence Kendrick Bangs Kellogg One With the Desert: Staggering Residence in Joshua Tree, California [Video] The strength of the hard and rugged protective shell exterior is drawn from the desert, contrasting with an interior that exudes warmth throughout. According to the architects, the design highlights the masculine and feminine forms that are the hallmark of organic architecture. The residence is currently listed on the US market for $3 million. New for March: Smith hotels from Cartagena to the Cotswolds (via the Maldives, Miami and more…)

by Rachel Juarez-Carr

"barefoot luxury". where do i sign?

Constance Moofushi hotel in the Maldives

‘Barefoot luxury’ might be becoming a bit of a cliche, but we’re addicted to it nonetheless. And where better to kick of your shoes in sumptuous surroundings than in the Maldives? We’re fickle folk who fall in love anew every time we go there and find our new favourite hotel, but when the hotels in question are as glorious as Constance Moofushi, we just can’t help ourselves.

No 131 hotel in the CotswoldsNext up, we headed west and found ourselves in the desert – Dubai, to be exact, where the dark, sleek style of Armani Hotel lived up to its billing as the UAE’s most exclusive address.

Speaking of addresses, No 131 hotel in Cheltenham (it’s number 131 on the street, obviously) has been wowing half our London office bit by bit recently; they’ve all been coming back to Smith HQ from their country weekends raving about gargantuan scones and soak-of-a-lifetime bathtubs.

Over in the Americas, we set about exploring Cartagena, Colombia, from our temporary home-from-home Casablanca B&B (where mojitos in the rooftop pool are order of the day, every day). Then, we went north to the US, to hang out at the Metropolitan by Como, Miami Beach, where the chic 1920s architecture’s almost as alluring as the seaside setting.

Check back a month from now to see where March’s adventures have taken us…

Oh Hey, Mr. Cool: Bill Nye Emulating Jay-Z Photograph

danipretto

why is he everywhere all of the sudden?

bill-nye-and-jay-z.jpg This is a photo Bill Nye posted to his Instagram of him emulating the Jay-Z photograph in the background. That's pretty much all there is to say except I'm glad Jay-Z and Nas put their feud to rest because I got tired of hating Jay-Z so much in the early 2000's. It took a lot out of me. It's probably why I have gray hair now. "You're bald." Not everywhere I'm not -- see? *pulling down pants* Oh, forgot I shaved down there after all. "Wait -- was there a face drawn on your penis?" My girlfriend is a freak. Thanks to tessa and Meredith, who agree this would be even cooler if it were Biggie.

Yield’s Sweet Suspension Shelf is Inspired by Spanish Colonial Design

by greenzglobal
danipretto

would be fun but not sure i could eat them... and trust that i did it right...

DSC07051

Yield‘s Pantry Shelf is a modern suspension shelf made in San Francisco from natural pine and heavy-duty bronze cable. The shelf was inspired by the classic kitchen shelves in the old Spanish Colonial houses of St. Augustine, which were suspended to keep goods safe and dry. This is a fresh take on that classic design, combining honest materials with rugged construction.

A Cork Globe For Push-Pinning Everywhere You've Been

danipretto

want!

cork-globe-1.jpgBut why is it round?! This is the Cork Globe from SUCK UK. It costs $200. You're supposed to use it to push-pin all the cities and countries you've visited so when people come into your office they'll see just how well traveled you are and get super intimidated by your worldliness. Me? I intimidate people who come into my office the old fashioned way: locking the door, tying them to their seat, and whipping them with my phone charger until they tell me where they hid the money. I'm joking, I don't even have an office, and if anybody saw me trying to pull that in my cubicle they'd probably call security. That's because I work with a bunch of sissies who DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET SHIT DONE. If I had a cork globe it would only have one push-pin in it -- ON THE MOON. Suck it goobers, I'm a space ranger! Keep going for a closeup because it exists.

Redbull Gives You Superpowers: Justice League Cans

danipretto

fun. they should do it. i would drink them!

justice-league-redbull-cans-1.jpg These are the conceptual Justice League Redbull cans imagined by New York based art director Diego Fonseca. I would drink all of them. The Batman and Aquaman ones? Those I would chug. Speaking of, is an Aquaman movie officially in the works now or what? Because I feel like that could be a good one. Especially if there's lots of steamy mermaid action. FACTOID: I go out of my way to make sure I only buy mermaid-free seafood. I don't care if they're the topless chickens of the sea, I don't want them in my tuna salad. Keep going for the Flash, Superman and Wonder Woman ones.

Creamy aubergine lasagne rolls

by Becca John

Creamy aubergine lasagne rolls

Lasagne is one of my biggest conundrums. It’s oh-so-delicious, but it’s also oh-so-labour-intensive.

Make a white sauce; make a tomato sauce; make your veggie filling; layer, layer, layer.

None of these things are particularly difficult on their own, but when you have to do them all simultaneously, it can become a bit of a headache. Even when it’s all cooked and ready to serve, I still manage to make a mess – somehow cutting through several layers of pasta is too difficult for my stupid hands and I end up dragging an entire sheet of lasagne out from the middle of my beautifully layered dish (please tell me someone else does this too?).

All of this culminates in my life containing far less lasagne than I would like.

Creamy aubergine lasagne rolls

The solution: these creamy aubergine lasagne rolls. They’re designed to make your lasagne-making experience a walk in the park.

The vegetable mixture is cooked up, and then a few big spoonfuls of ricotta are mixed right in – no white sauce to faff about with. I used passata straight out of the carton instead of simmering a tomato sauce for ages – by the time you’ve added all your other ingredients, you can’t even tell.

And, my favourite part: instead of layering it all up, I made these adorable little lasagne rolls. They’re about as much effort to put together as the layered version, but so much easier to serve – everyone gets their own little rolls, which you can scoop straight out of the pan with no trouble. No more sawing through al dente lasagne sheets!

Creamy aubergine lasagne rolls

Aren’t they cute?

(No? Just me?)

The point is, this version was so much quicker and easier to make than normal lasagne. I definitely enjoy making lasagne on occasions when I have some time to spare, but this version is far more suitable for a weeknight.

You can find the recipe over at Great British Chefs.

I think I might be obsessed with lasagne rolls now. What’s your favourite variety of lasagne – what should I try next?

DINER | British Gastropub “The Fat Badger” To Open In The West End’s Old Le Gavroche

by Scout Magazine
danipretto

great news!

fatbadger

by Andrew Morrison | When Le Gavroche closed last month after some 35 years in business at 1616 Alberni, I half expected to see its old Victorian shell knocked down in favour of some crappy condo that a prominent architect staffed out to a junior with a lazy eye. Despite the best efforts of Chef Robert Guest, the place felt done after longtime owner Manny Ferreira decamped for Miradoro in the Okanagan, which sort of explains why a bailiff had to eventually slap a notice on the locked front door exclaiming $80,000 in unpaid rent. To put it another way, nobody went.

The good news, of course, is that it’s not going to be demolished to make way for the kinds of buildings that have robbed Coal Harbour of the personality it used to have. It’s been picked up by chef Neil Taylor, Ed Perrow, and Georgia Goritsas, the same triumvirate that brought us Espana on Denman Street two years ago. They signed the deal on the space earlier today.

It’s going to be a proper British gastropub, which makes sense since both Perrow and Taylor are English imports.

They’re calling it The Fat Badger.

“Before we opened Espana,” Perrow says, “Neil and I always talked about a doing a proper pub when we sat and reminisced about the places we used to drink at in Chiswick and Hammersmith.” So what does a “proper pub” mean? I’ve been told to expect some local craft beers plus a few British classics (London Pride, Fullers, etc.), a little “by the glass” wine list, a handful of cocktails, and Neil’s always reliably good food. “We want to keep the menu small,” Perrow points out, adding that the goal is to change it two or three times a week, “depending on what we are getting in fresh from local suppliers.”

Taylor says we can anticipate a “casual, warm environment” with British gastropub-style dishes. At dinner, “you can expect to see dishes such as roast pork belly with colcannon; black pudding and cider; grilled lamb with pea purée, morels and mint sauce; roast cod with spinach, baby onions, wild mushrooms and red wine; and some classics like Lancashire hot pot and braised oxtail with suet dumplings. Appetizers could feature potted Dungeness crab with buttered toast, fried pigs trotters with English mustard, or jellied ham hock and rabbit terrine with piccalilly.”

And what about lunch?

“For lunch we will have a delicious burger with aged English cheddar or even Stilton; a daily pie such as fish, steak and kidney pudding, chicken, ham and leek; and soups such as cock-a-leekie, Cullen skink, or game and lentil. For desserts, we will have dishes like eton mess, sticky toffee pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream, treacle tart with custard, lemon meringue pie and arctic roll, homemade ice creams, and a great selection of British and Irish cheeses. Bar snacks could include black pudding scotched eggs with HP sauce, hand-cut fries with curry sauce, London pride battered cod and chips with tartare sauce.”

Sounds great, but will there be roast beef and Yorkshires? Yes. Every Sunday, The Fat Badger will be tabling a special traditional roast, be it rib of beef with Yorkshire puddings and horseradish “or roast leg of lamb with mint sauce or roast pork shoulder with hot English mustard and apple sauce.”

The Fat Badger will be open for lunch and dinner, with brunch service on the weekends. Hours will probably be 11am to 11pm. Expect a quick turnaround on this. I imagine they’ll be ready for their first service at some point in April.

According to the latest issue of the World Bank’s quarterly Food Price Watch, the world loses or wastes one-quarter to one-third of all food produced for human consumption. This shocking statistic means that while much of the world suffers from malnourishment, up 1520 calories per day are thrown away in the developed world.

Daaaaaaaw: Two-Legged Cat Walks Like A T-Rex

danipretto

sad but uplifting

t-rex-kitty.jpg This is Mercury the two legged cat. He was found at five weeks old with no front legs. Now he's having the time of his life. The folks that adopted him set up a Facebook page called Raising Mercury with a ton of pictures and you can find a bunch of videos at their Youtube page. I just spent a solid twenty minutes watching them. He's a precious angel. My dog? My dog just shit on the floor by the bookcase because she refuses to go to the bathroom outside when its raining even though I did it myself to show her there was nothing to be afraid of. Neighbor wasn't thrilled about it, but I hate that guy anyways. You want to describe my bare ass to the police, go for it. Keep going for several more pics and videos.

A Rescued Pelican With A GoPro Camera Strapped to His Beak Documents First Successful Flight

by Lori Dorn
danipretto

Looks fake??

Big Bird is a pelican who was separated from his flock during a storm and washed ashore on the banks of Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. The staff of Greystoke Mahale, a nearby resort, took in the wayward pelican and taught him how to fly again.

He didn’t fly for some weeks but with encouragement he got the idea. We aren’t sure how much flying he may have already done before arriving here but he was pretty shaky in his next attempts on the beach. We would run up and down flapping our arms and simulating flight for him. He would look on curiously until one day he showed us how it was done! It was short and uncontrolled and we would look away when he was landing as he seemed to not distinguish between ground and air speed coming in way too fast and endangering our beach furniture.

He finally got it right and with a GoPro strapped to his beak, Big Bird took flight.

The Food and Drug Administration is weighing the benefits of a bold new technique that produces embryos with DNA from three people. It may sound crazy, but the Associated Press reports that the FDA is currently deciding if it should allow research labs to pursue the experimental technique, which could help prevent children from inheriting genetic diseases. Meanwhile, those opposed to the procedure say that approving three parent embryos could lead to ‘designer babies.’
