Picture of an emerald hummingbird in flight, Costa Rican highlands

In for a Treat

Photograph by Florian Kuster, National Geographic Your Shot

This beautiful, coppery-headed emerald hummingbird had been dancing with this amazing flower in the Costa Rican highlands, writes Your Shot member Florian Kuster. His attitude, colors, and plumage were just sublime. One can see all the details of even the smallest feather despite the fast movement of the birds wings.

This photo was submitted to Your Shot. Check out the new and improved website, where you can share photos, take part in assignments, lend your voice to stories, and connect with fellow photographers from around the globe.

HOLY SHIT. Check out that pie!

I baked that. Can you believe it? Fresh blueberry pie! That bitch even has a homemade lattice crust!

You know you want to eat my pie! (Wait, that came out wrong. [Ha ha! I said "came."])

I enjoy reading, writing, painting, gardening, and I love geeky things. But, you don't care about any of that, right? Because PIE.

When I was younger I hated going to weddings. It seemed that all of my aunts and the grandmotherly types used to come up to me, poking me in the ribs and cackling, telling me, 'You're next.'

They stopped that shit after I started doing the same thing to them at funerals.

@Baisley... cant you put a team on this and figure it out by next time you make me update my app?

In the 60s, Marvin Minsky assigned a couple of undergrads to spend the summer programming a computer to use a camera to identify objects in a scene. He figured they'd have the problem solved by the end of the summer. Half a century later, we're still working on it.

Japanese Cookbook Shows You How to Cook With Condoms

by Sarah Theeboom
Kevin White

I'll never understand Japanese culture no matter how long I live...

Bacon flavored condoms are one thing, but rubber-wrapped sushi is something else entirely. To promote safe sex, Japanese manga writer Kyosuke Kagami has co-created a recipe book called Condom Meals I Want to Make for You. According to Kotaku, the e-book aims to show…

Poem of the Day: Defence of Fort M'Henry

by Francis Scott Key
Kevin White

Never knew the other verses...

O! say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there —
O! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines on the stream —
'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havock of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul foot-steps' pollution,
No refuge could save the hireling and slave,
        From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave;
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home, and the war's desolation,
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n-rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto — "In God is our trust!"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave.
