whyonlytwice:

i.

We must resist. We must refuse
to disappear

I said, In exile
survival
is the first necessity.

After that (I say this
tentatively)
we might begin

ii.

Kill what you can’t save
what you can’t eat throw out
what you can’t throw out bury

What you can’t bury give away
what you can’t give away you must carry with you,
it is always heavier than you thought.

iii.

I will not come when you call.

Expat activists and journalists leave USA for Berlin's safety

mostlysignssomeportents:

image

From Laura Poitras to Jacob Appelbaum to Sarah Harrison, Berlin has become a haven for American journalists, activists and whistleblowers who fear America’s unlimited appetite for surveillance and put their trust in Germany’s memory of the terror of the Stasi.

An excellent, long profile of the expatriate scene in Berlin paints a picture of a city where the shadow of the sovietized, suspicion-haunted German Democratic Republic era is cast over the public discourse, creating sympathy for activists who expose spying, and suspicion of the states that would punish them. It’s occasioned by the launch of Citizenfour, the brilliant documentary about Edward Snowden and the leaks he took with him out of the NSA.

“The story of Cassandra, the woman who told the truth but was not believed, is not nearly as embedded in our culture as that of the Boy Who Cried Wolf—that is, the boy who was believed the first few times he told the same lie. Perhaps it should be.”

- In her cover essay on silencing women in the October 2014 issue of Harper’s, Rebecca Solnit once again proves that she is one of our era’s greatest essayist – further evidence here and here. (via explore-blog)

“White women’s feminisms still center around equality…. Black women’s feminisms demand justice. There is a difference. One kind of feminism focuses on the policies that will help women integrate fully into the existing American system. The other recognizes the fundamental flaws in the system and seeks its complete and total transformation.”

but im already crazy so what would happen if i looked upon an eldritch horror

okay so i have a kind of headcanon about this sort of thing: since the concept of the eldritch horror like we tend to think of it was basically devised by Lovecraft and his buddies, who were 99% heterosexual cisgender white dudes with deeply ingrained sexist and racist viewpoints, and HPL in particular suffered from existential dread over humanity not being the center of the universe, fear of sea creatures, and a deep-seated terror over the possibility that there was anything other than milk-white Anglo blood in his ancestry…

…maybe the mind-blowingly horrifying things that these entities reveal or embody are actually things that a lot of us would be okay with. Like, Lovecraft would have considered a polyamorous relationship involving people of diverse ethnic backgrounds and gender identities to be unspeakably disgusting, especially if the people in that relationship enjoyed sushi. By his standards, most of us on Tumblr are already completely warped and corrupted.

AU in which the Deep Ones and the Old Gods actually get on very well with people who aren’t horrendous awful racists and are pretty cool and fun to know and can tell us a lot of very interesting things about earths history and places humanity has never been able to visit :)

This is a good AU I like this

I like Nice Monster AU’s and stories where things which are meant to be scary actually turn out to be interesting and awesome <3

Now you all see why people like me identify with eldritch horrors

I’m reminded here of reading Facts Concerning Arthur Jermyn And His Family. (Spoiler, although given the age of the story I think the statute of limitations is up: Arthur’s bloodline was awful because it turned out they were only a few generations descended from a hyperintelligent white gorilla worshipped as a goddess.) I remember looking at that and going, “That’s a little disquieting, but it’s not reason for insanity and suicide. That’s a slightly odd superhero origin story. Or maybe a supervillain origin story, but either way.”

And that is why I love you, dear.

guys never realize that.

Why play games though? Just come out and say no, don’t seem to hard.

cause the word “no” is not in ya’ll vocabulary.

^^^^

"why play games though?" what, like the you think no means try harder game? or the i will only leave you alone if i believe another man has a prior claim otherwise i feel entitled to your attentions game? or all the PUA games out there that aren’t even worth listing? those games that you people play fucking all the time?

Because dudes say shit like “no means yes and yes means anal.”

Because the only way to get some dumbass to leave me alone is to tell him I’ve got a boyfriend - that I’m “owned” by some other dude.

Because I once got hit on in a CVS by some douche who wouldn’t leave me alone despite not saying a word to him - until I started using sign language.

Because if we can’t trust our girlfriends to have our backs we’re completely fucked.

BECAUSE IF YOU GO OUT ON THE TOWN WITHOUT A BUDDY AND YOU GET RAPED SOME FUCKSTAIN WILL SAY YOU SHOULD HAVE FOLLOWED THE MAGIC ANTI-RAPE RULES.

Because when a dude approaches you and you have no interest, he knows it, and he doesn’t fucking care. He’s in your space and he’s going to make you pay attention to him because it isn’t about what you want, it’s about what he wants, and about you owing him your fucking time. He isn’t attracted to you, personally, or he might actually care what you wanted - he’s attracted to the distant and awkward lie of who he wants you to be for him, like a blow-up doll or a cyberfantasy.

Because when that dude sees the look of discomfort on a woman’s face and she starts to back away, he doesn’t back off. He pushes, trying to “win her over” or “get her to like him.” As if women are things you can win or get.

And this just in: When someone ignores every reaction and every interaction because it doesn’t track with what they want from you, they aren’t going to suddenly become decent human beings with proper boundaries just because you were forthright. They’re going to slap you, threaten you, or hit you with their car unless you find a way to let them off the hook.

Enter the cockblock.

Because there’s been a whole bunch of cases recently where women have said no and been assaulted or murdered, so saying no isn’t a safe thing for a woman to do.

Just had a PUA type refuse to accept my No the other night when I was waiting for my husband. I thought I was going to have to mace him to get him to go away.

Dear Senator Ted Cruz, I'm going to explain to you how Net Neutrality ACTUALLY works

by Matthew Inman
ThePrettiestOne

Honestly, Cruz is actually right here. Net Neutrality means that even poor people can have some internet, just like Obamacare means that poor people can have some healthcare.
As a poor person, I'm in support of both concepts, actually.

“White men make up approximately 36% of the population, but commit 75% of mass shootings. What would be called terrorism by any other skin tone is suddenly some mysterious unnamed disease. We as a society are perfectly happy to further stigmatize mentally ill people, who are far more likely to be victims of violence than commit violence, in the service of protecting white supremacy and male entitlement.”

I love that this is happening.

I was fighting dress codes when I was thirteen / fourteen. That was back in 1999 and 2000. The fact that this shit is still going on is so gross. Grateful that the resistance is still happening.

Cute Illustrations of Idioms From Around the World

Travel site HotelClub has created an illustration series of some common–if rather odd–idioms found in various languages around the world. Among the more bizarre and humorous: In Japanese “to have a wide face” is to have many friends. In Polish, “not my circus, not my monkeys” means “not my problem.” And in Spanish, “to give someone pumpkins” means rejecting a romantic overture.

No Justice, No Peace (11.9.14): The State of Missouri has dedicated weapons of war to the city of Ferguson in anticipation of the grand jury decision for Michael Brown’s killer, Darren Wilson.

Does this look right to you? Military weapons ready to be used on it’s own citizens?
