Michigan-based photographer Vincent Brady uses an elaborate 4-camera rig and lots of software to capture what he calls Planetary Panoramas. These are somewhat similar to the tiny planet videos we’ve seen the last few months, but the results are quite a bit more dramatic. He shares about his technique:

While experimenting with different photography tricks and techniques back in 2012, I was shooting 360 degree panoramas in the daytime and long exposures of the stars streaking in the sky at night. It suddenly became clear that the potential to combine the two techniques could be a trip! Since the Earth is rotating at a steady 1,040 mph I created a custom rig of 4 cameras with fisheye lenses to capture the entire night-sky in motion. Thus the images show the stars rotating around the north star as well as the effect of the southern pole as well and a 360 degree panorama of the scene on Earth. Each camera is doing nonstop long exposures, typically about 1 minute consecutively for the life of the camera battery. Usually about 3 hours. I then made a script to stitch all the thousands of these panoramas into this time-lapse.

Desde la llegada de Popcorn Time, algo quedó claro: una nueva forma de ver películas y series había nacido. Ya no había que esperar ni a descargarse el torrent, podíamos utilizarlo como fuente online para reproducir el vídeo en streaming. Y claro, la industria no se quedó de brazos cruzados. El Popcorn Time original cerró a los pocos días de nacer.

Sin embargo, el daño ya estaba hecho. La aplicación estaba hecha con código abierto, y esto significaría la apertura (y en algunos casos más también el cierre) de varios clones de Popcorn Time que popularizarían el "torrent-streaming" por todo el mundo. Recopilemos algunos de los que todavía funcionan.

Cuevana Storm

El portal Cuevana, famoso por permitir el visionado online de películas, no perdió tiempo a hacer su propio clon de PopCorn Time llamado Cuevaba Storm aprovechando sus propios recursos. Está en fase beta y sólo funciona para OS X, pero cumple con lo que promete. Tenéis más detalles en Applesfera.

Time4Popcorn

Time4Popcorn es quizás el clon más conocido, ya que fue el primero que cogió las riendas tras el cierre del cliente original y su aplicación es compatible con todas las plataformas de escritorio junto con Android. De hecho tiene como nombre Popcorn Time, intentando seguir el rastro de la primera aplicación.

Este cliente es quizás también el más prometedor: tiene incluido un cliente VPN para poder utilizar el programa de forma anónima y para el futuro tendrá soporte para Chromecast (en Windows).

Popcorn Time.io

Es muy fácil confundir este clon con Time4Popcorn: hasta la web de Poprocn Time.io es completamente idéntica. Pero no todas las funciones están allí: no tiene cliente VPN integrado ni versión para Android... pero sí que es compatible con OS X, Windows y Linux y tiene todo lo necesario para poder ver una película en cuestión de segundos.

UnTV

UnTV se promociona directamente como un reproductor pensado para los ordenadores conectados al televisor, y así convertirlos en un Media Center donde en vez de almacenar películas (ojo, también es capaz de reproducirlas si las tenemos guardadas) las reproducimos directamente desde un archivo .torrent.

Algunas peculiaridades de este cliente son, por ejemplo, la habilidad de utilizar un teléfono móvil como mando a distancia a través de una web local o la cantidad de accesos directos que ofrece mediante el teclado.

ShowBox

Hasta ahora siempre hemos hablado de clientes pensados para ordenador, pero ¿no estamos precisamente en la era móvil? Show Box es un cliente nativo para Android que permite ver películas utilizando el mismo modelo. Incluso nos permite descargar los vídeos en el dispositivo para que no necesitemos conexión a internet, pero eso sacrificará espacio. Correrá a nuestra elección.

Zona

Terminamos con un clon que nos viene desde Rusia: Zona combina la reproducción de películas y series en streaming con la sintonización de canales de televisión de todo el mundo. Sin olvidarnos de la música, que también recode de torrents como hacía el lamentablemente difunto HipHop, y de otras fuentes de entretenimiento como eventos deportivos o juegos online. La lástima es que todavía no hay versión para OS X.

Rather than build every ship, plant or creature by hand, the developers of No Man’s Sky created an engine that randomly (within specified boundaries) creates the world for them.

Ream pulls up a blue-ish menu with lines of code written across the screen and quickly clicks across it to pull up a very specific menu within their engine. Before I know it, he’s selected an option for trees and I’m staring at one. There’s a blueprint for a fairly standard-looking tree off on the right. He clicks a button that says “view variants.” Dozens of new trees—of different shapes, sizes, and colors—pop up on the left.

“This is our toolset,” Murray says as we scroll through the trees. “We built our own engine. It’s super crappy, but it’s kind of like Unity or something like that. We’ve written it all around procedural generation. And that’s kind of what we spent the first year, when it was just four of us, what we spent our time doing. And then the last month before the VGXs we built the trailer using that.”

We go through a few other objects that are procedurally generated in the game. Rhinos, space ships. Ream clicks “view variants” on all of them. And then he keeps clicking them and, sure enough, new variants keep showing up.

“You’re building a blueprint,” Murray said. “And that’s true of everything in the game. So say one of our artists will build something and that will take say a week. But what they get from that is every possible variant of that. So if you build a cat, you also get a lion and a tiger and a panther and things that you’ve never seen—kind of mutations beyond that.”

“Why we’re doing it is because it’s interesting to us. My attitude has been, ‘Let’s just do something crazy and go bankrupt doing it.’ That’s what I’ve always said. But I don’t wanna just make games at the same scale as Joe Danger and still be doing that in 10 years. I just want to try one big thing. So that was the attitude and that was really freeing. As a genuine thing, not like we went into it like, ‘Sure! We’ll try this and this with the mindset of and it will probably go horribly wrong but we’ll go out with a bang,’ which we still might.”

Apropos of nothing, here’s a quick video of a Japanese illustrator who goes by the name Satsuma, working with a Northern white-faced owl perched on his hand. The clip is humourous in and of itself, but it’s especially fascinating to see the stabilization of the bird’s head and eyes while he works. Strangely mesmerizing. (via Tastefully Offensive)

HERE COMES THE AIRPLANE

Hace algún tiempo se pusieron de moda en Facebook las páginas "Informer", en las que se publican cotilleos específicos de cada universidad. Buscando hacerse relevante en este tipo de grupos, la aplicación de mensajería anónima Secret acaba de presentar una nueva funcionalidad: sus Secret Dens o rincones específicos para cada organización. Por el momento, esta característica está en beta privada y sólo puede usarse vía solicitud.

Cuando una persona publica un secreto dentro de un Den, éste sólo será visible para los integrantes del mismo: nadie ajeno podrá leerlo y, por supuesto, será completamente anónimo. ¿Y qué se hace para publicar uno de estos mensajes? Basta con añadir un @yourdomain al mismo. En la imagen que acompaña estas líneas vemos varios ejemplos de mensajes con @secret, que sólo podrán leer los trabajadores de Secret.

Para unirse a un Den ya creado, deberás añadir tu cuenta de correo oficial de la organización (por ejemplo, una compañía en la que trabajas o la universidad en la que estudias) a tu cuenta de Secret. Ésta detectará su extensión (por ejemplo, si termina en @genbeta.com, sabe que es de Genbeta) y te dejará unirte al Den privado si éste ya existe. Si no, podrás solicitar que se cree o tendrás que esperar.

Una estrategia lógica por parte de Secret, que quiere llevar su aplicación a entornos cerrados donde los secretos tengan quizás algo más de sentido que en un público completamente abierto. Sin embargo, también tiene sus riesgos: habrá que ver cómo responden y moderan los comentarios ofensivos, una de las quejas que más están recibiendo este tipo de aplicaciones.

Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has found code inside the first beta version of iOS 8 that allows users to run two apps side-by-side on the same screen. AppleInsider first reported on the information.

Troughton-Smith detailed some of his findings on Twitter. In the iOS 8 SpringBoard, there is code to run two apps side-by-side:

Also, he said that side-by-side apps appear as a single screen in the App Switcher.

Rumors of the split-screen multitasking capability first popped up in early May. But a few days before WWDC, news broke that the feature wasnt ready for prime time and is still a work in progress.

A number of iPad competitors, including the Microsoft Surface line and tablets from Samsung, allow multitasking.

While the code is currently contained in iOS 8, that doesnt mean the feature will ever see the light of day. The code could simply be removed by Apple in a later beta version. But I know a number of iOS device users have their fingers crossed.

[Jongwon Park] and his team of students at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have created a fast biped robot based upon the Velociraptor. Raptor weighs in at just 3Kg, and stands only 470mm tall, yet it is capable of running at 46 km/h. That’s almost as fast as Boston Dynamic’s Cheetah.

Raptor uses carbon fiber composite legs to absorb and release energy while running. The system is similar to that used in high performance prosthetic legs. A rotating tail assembly further helps to balance Raptor on rough terrain. We have to admit, the tail system does look a bit dangerous for any humans who might need to interact with the robot. It does work though, as evidenced by Raptor bounding over Styrofoam blocks.

The Raptor robot is quite impressive when running at full speed. Considering this project’s budget was nowhere near the resources of Boston Dynamics, it’s an amazing accomplishment. The video reminds us of  Boston Dynamics founder [Marc Raibert's] early robots at the MIT Leg Lab. We can’t wait to see what this team produces in the future.

When Maria is close to choosing Manolo, the darker of the two deities poisons him to ensure his victory. Awakening in the Land of the Remembered but determined to return to his beloved Maria, Manolo travels through a breathtakingly gorgeous interpretation of the underworld to return home. Think Romeo and Juliet, if Romeo battled his way back to life following the unfortunate final scene of Shakespeare's tragedy.

The online video giant is reportedly in plans to buy out the popular livestreaming site beloved by gamers.

Entertainment site Variety reports that YouTube is close to announcing a $1bn (£594m) deal to acquire the online gameplay streaming service. With YouTube already a subsidiary of Google, the Twitch deal would further consolidate the search giant's hold over online video.

A couple months ago we came across a new technology called Spritz. It’s a tool that helps you read faster. Given how far behind I typically am in my Old Reader queue, we thought it would be a good thing to try out in the application. We were so happy with the results that we’ve decided to roll out the beta Spritz integration to our users today.

To enable Spritz, you’ll need to go into your settings and click the Spritz checkbox. You’ll then see the Spritz icon in your feeds which you can click on (or use the ‘i’ hotkey). The first time through you’ll need to create a Spritz account, but after that it should be clear sailing and fast reading.

El otro día, en el mar, se fueron todos los instrumentos al carajo. Era de noche, estábamos en viaje de vuelta, en mitad de una niebla espesa, y yo acababa de fondear el velero en cuatro metros de sonda con treinta y cinco de cadena. Si la avería, o lo que fuera, llega a ocurrir media hora antes, las habría pasado mortales: no habría tenido más remedio que mantenerme al pairo lejos de la costa, esperando que con el día levantase la niebla, con cuanta luz a bordo pudiera tener encendida, haciendo sonar la bocina de vez en cuando y rezando, o lo que equivalga a eso, para que no apareciera de la nada otro barco y me metiera la proa en el través.

El caso es que, como digo, mientras a la luz de la mesa de cartas anotaba las incidencias en el cuaderno de bitácora, comprobé que las pantallas de los instrumentos no marcaban nada, y que el GPS que proporciona al barco la latitud y la longitud se había vuelto majara; daba posiciones imposibles, el AIS tenía errores y las cartas electrónicas me situaban, como a Tintín y al profesor Tornasol en El tesoro de Rackham el Rojo, a veces en la ciudad del Vaticano, y otras en Australia o en el Caribe. Resumiendo: no había un maldito aparato de ayuda a la navegación que funcionara, excepto, comprobé con alivio, la radio y el piloto automático. Eso era importante, pues antes del amanecer yo debía levar ancla de nuevo. Si el piloto funcionaba, no habría problema ninguno, me dije. Todo era cuestión, si los satélites seguían funcionando con normalidad en el cielo, de sacar el GPS portátil que llevo en la bolsa Mayday, con el equipo de supervivencia por si un día vienen mal dadas.

Lo hice. Aparté la baliza, las bengalas, la linterna, el cuchillo, y encontré el pequeño aparato. Pero al ir a encenderlo se me heló la sangre: no funcionaba. Lo abrí, inquieto, y comprobé que se habían sulfatado las pilas, dejándolo inservible. Maldiciendo mi torpeza, intenté limpiarlo y despejar los contactos, sin éxito. Estaba tan muerto como mi abuela. Recordé entonces que a bordo llevo un tercer GPS de modelo muy antiguo, trofeo de un antiguo reportaje para la tele, cuando perseguía planeadoras con la gente de Vigilancia Aduanera y, tras una movida algo particular, mi compadre Javier Collado, piloto del helicóptero Argos, me regaló el aparato con el que se guiaban los malos. Lo encontré en un cajón de la camareta, le puse pilas, y tampoco. Demasiado tiempo, quizás. Demasiado viejo, casi treinta años después.
