Maryam Mirzakhani Is the First Woman Fields Medalist

by Soulskill
An anonymous reader sends news that the 2014 Fields Medals have been awarded for outstanding work in the field of mathematics. The winners are Artur Avila, Manjul Bhargava, Martin Hairer, and Maryam Mirzakhani. Quanta Magazine writes, Mirzakhani is the first woman to win a Fields Medal. The gender imbalance in mathematics is long-standing and pervasive, and the Fields Medal, in particular, is ill-suited to the career arcs of many female mathematicians. It is restricted to mathematicians younger than 40, focusing on the very years during which many women dial back their careers to raise children. Mirzakhani feels certain, however, that there will be many more female Fields medalists in the future. "There are really many great female mathematicians doing great things," she said. Quanta has profiles of the other winners as well (Avila, Bhargava, Hairer), and of Rolf Nevanlinna Prize winner Subhash Khot.

Here’s few fun pieces by UK street artist JPS who creates small and lage-scale stencil works, paintings, and installations in urban areas. While most of his work seems greatly influenced by pop culture icons, horror movie characters, and comic book heroes, I tend to enjoy these one-off pieces a bit more. You can see more over on his Facebook page.

Pope Francis to Young People: Stop Wasting Time on the Internet

by gguillotte
Tadeu

... and waste time in the church instead?! :P

“Maybe many young people waste too many hours on futile things,” he said in a speech to 50,000 German altar servers who were visiting on pilgrimage, according to NBC News. “Our life is made up of time, and time is a gift from God, so it is important that it be used in good and fruitful actions.” He went on to cite specific online activities, such as “chatting on the Internet or with smartphones, watching TV soap operas, and (using) the products of technological progress, which should simplify and improve the quality of life, but distract attention away from what is really important.”

Gmail Now Rejects Emails With Misleading Combinations of Unicode Characters

by Soulskill
An anonymous reader writes: Google today announced it is implementing a new effort to thwart spammers and scammers: the open standard known as Unicode Consortium's "Highly Restricted" specification. In short, Gmail now rejects emails from domains that use what the Unicode community has identified as potentially misleading combinations of letters. The news today follows Google's announcement last week that Gmail has gained support for accented and non-Latin characters. The company is clearly okay with international domains, as long as they aren't abused to trick its users.

Sierra Games returns with new King’s Quest and Geometry Wars titles

by Kyle Orland

If you're a PC gamer of a certain age, the name Sierra On-Line (or Sierra Entertainment) revives memories of some of the most classic point-and-click adventures of the late 20th century. New corporate owner Activision is set to reactivate those memories today, reviving the brand as "Sierra Games" and promising new games in the King's Quest and Geometry Wars franchises.

The new Sierra name will apparently serve as an umbrella for a number of independent studios to reinterpret some classic gaming franchises. The newest King's Quest entry is being developed for 2015 by The Odd Gentlemen, best known for esoteric puzzle platform game The Misadventures of PB Winterbottom. Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions, meanwhile, is being worked on by mobile/portable developer Lucid Games for this holiday season. No platforms have been announced for either title.

“Sierra’s goal is to find and work with gifted up-and-coming indie developers working on their own amazing projects or who are passionate about working on great Sierra IP,” a Sierra representative told GamesBeat. “We’re in talks with a large number of other indie devs, and we can’t wait to share more details with fans in the near future.”
