"[F]or the first several years the SAT was offered, males scored higher than females on the Math..."

by wagatwe
“[F]or the first several years the SAT was offered, males scored higher than females on the Math section but females achieved higher scores on the Verbal section. ETS policy-makers determined that the Verbal test needed to be “balanced” more in favor of males, and added questions pertaining to politics, business and sports to the Verbal portion. Since that time, males have outscored females on both the Math and Verbal sections. Dwyer notes that no similar effort has been made to “balance” the Math section, and concludes that, “It could be done, but it has not been, and I believe that probably an unconscious form of sexism underlies this pattern. When females show the superior performance, ‘balancing’ is required; when males show the superior performance, no adjustments are necessary.” “”

And then people urge me everything is fine, of course it is, when you’re ignoring statistics that is.

(via cwnl)

Fun fact: SAT tests predict college performance pretty well for men, but they strongly underpredict college performance for women. http://spp.sagepub.com/content/early/2012/12/20/1948550612469038.abstract

I think I’ve reblogged this before, but that study needs to be shared.

(via conjecturesandconversations)

hahahaha more women go to college than men still so joke’s on you

(via kubotits)

And colleges lower the qualifications for admission for men as well if they dont deliberately favor men over women in admissions in an effort to “balance the scales”.

(via arcadiasilver)

I say this over and over again: men, if colleges weren’t PRACTICING A FORM OF PREFERENTIAL ADMISSION IN ORDER TO GET “BALANCED” CAMPUSES, you would not be getting in as much. So shut up about affirmative action.

Also, standardized tests don’t just disadvantage women - they also tend to highly disadvantage POC and other marginalized groups. My mother once fought really hard to get a PhD candidate with shitty GRE scores admitted to her program, because she knew that GREs tend to disadvantage black people. The candidate got in, got her PhD, and is now teaching at an Ivy League School.

Jupiter's Triple Shadow Transit

Jupiter's Triple Shadow Transit This webcam and telescope image of banded gas giant Jupiter shows the transit of three shadows cast by Jupiter's moons in progress, captured in Belgian skies on October 12 at 0528 UT. Such a three shadow transit is a relatively rare event, even for a large planet with many moons. Visible in the frame are the three Galilean moons responsible, Callisto at the far left edge, Io closest to Jupiter's disk, and Europa below and just left of Io. Of their shadows on the sunlit Jovian cloud tops, Callisto casts the most elongated one near the planet's south polar region at the bottom. Io's shadow is above and right of Jupiter's Great Red Spot. Of course viewed from Jupiter's perspective, these shadow crossings could be seen as solar eclipses, analogous to the Moon's shadow crossing the sunlit face of planet Earth.

You are Great!

by Steve Napierski
You are Great

You have to imagine that the next sentence is being read by the late, great Don LaFontaine. In a world where it feels like nothing you can do is right, there came video games!

Video games were definitely a way for me to escape from reality as a kid. Sure I made mistakes in video games, but I learned from my mistakes, I got better, and I was rewarded for them with new experiences and cheesy completion screens. Best of all, I wasn’t criticized for my mistakes as I learned (except for in Duck Hunt). Without video games there’s no telling where I might be right now. Maybe I would have experimented with drugs or even worse reading books. Thanks video games, you’ve always been a true friend.

by administrador@bytequeeugosto.com.br (Marcel Dias)

by Diego Calleja

OEMs building the next generation of Android devices can take advantage of targeted recommendations and options to run Android 4.4 efficiently, even on low-memory devices. Dalvik JIT code cache tuning, kernel samepage merging (KSM), swap to zRAM, and other optimizations help manage memory

Cat and Mouse

by Greg Ross

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brown_rat_distribution.png

Rats have pretty well overrun the globe, but there’s one exception: Alberta, Canada, which has waged a successful war against the critters for 50 years. Owning rats is forbidden to Alberta residents; they can be kept only by zoos and research institutions. The province maintains a rat control zone 600 kilometers long along its eastern border, staffed by eight professionals, and any rats they find are poisoned, gassed, or shot.

“Alberta is the only province with rat-free status, and we take this very seriously,” Verlyn Olson, minister of agriculture and rural development, said in an August statement. “We have lived without the menace of rats since 1950, when our control program began.”

But it’s a constant battle. In 2003 pest specialist John B. Bourne told National Geographic that he worries the wily creatures will hitch a ride to the interior aboard a truck or train. “They are so adaptive, so intelligent, so successful and physically capable … that it would not surprise me if they show up in a place where you’d least expect a rat to show up. I have the greatest respect for this rodent’s resourcefulness, and [its] capabilities scare the hell out of me.”
