FBI and Homeland Security Respond to Shocking Goatse Bomb in Atlanta

by jwz
Mahmoud

90% of roads in the atlanta area are named peachtree road.

Never has any TV news reporter looked more CONCERNED.
GOATSE BOMB.

The billboard is one of the thousands of YESCO digital billboards installed across the country. Naturally, it comes with an internet connection. The setup is exactly as insecure as you'd imagine.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that both the FBI and Department of Homeland Security are now both involved in chasing down the party responsible for briefly putting the graphic butt meme on a billboard.

Katie Cunningham: Announcing: PyCruise 2016!

Mahmoud

the only sort of cruise i'd consider attending. i probably won't like the cruise and would probably end up trying to code.

For years, I’ve been been muttering about doing a Python conference on a cruise ship. As someone who has had to pay out of pocket for many conferences, it made sense to me. Food would be covered, as would lodging. There would be lots of places to hang out, and some interesting ports to see.

This year, I finally pulled the trigger. After some negotiations with Carnival Cruise Lines, I have a contract for PyCruise 2016!

The details

PyCruise will be held from June 20th to June 25th, 2016, and will leave from New York City. We’ll visit Saint John and Halifax, then return to New York City.

Tickets start at $470 per person, and cover lodging, meals, entertainment, and child care.

Rather than having talks, PyCruise will adopt the Open Spaces style of conferences, allowing attendees to focus on collaboration, bonding, and learning new things in a group setting. I’ll open up a CFP for Open Space themes once we have meeting spaces reserved on the ship.

Families are also welcome on PyCruise. In fact, that was one of the reasons why I wanted to have this conference! Non-coding partners will be able to find more than enough to do around the ship, and free daycare gives everyone a break.

Registration

Registration is open! Because we have a set number rooms available, registering early allows you to pick the room that works the best for you (whether that’s the most inexpensive room, or the room with the best location or amenities).

For more details, go to the official PyCruise website, or follow PyCruise on Twitter!

Woman Leaves Blind Date Because Man Is Too Handsome

A 29-year-old Wuhan woman had recently been on a very interesting blind date. Since she became single 3 years ago, her family and friends have all been trying to set her up with someone. When someone has nominated a supposedly very handsome man, Ms. Liu agreed on a dinner date. Upon arrival, when she saw that her date looked like someone out of a Korean drama, with thick bangs and a tender face like a girl, she left immediately. She said his “beauty” was so shocking, she left without saying a word. When the reporter contacted Ms. Liu’s date, he laughed and said he is actually a “real man”.

Chinese Investors Flock to Omaha to Hear Warren Buffet Speak

Chinese Investors Flock to Omaha to Hear Warren Buffet Speak

Last weekend, thousands of investors flocked to Omaha to attend investment sage Warren Buffet’s speech at the shareholders meeting, hoping to learn his secret money making strategies. Over 2,000 Chinese investors attended the event, more than twice as many as last year. Along with many other Chinese, these investors symbolize the era of Chinese investment in foreign markets. According to HSBC, over $330,000,000,000 in capital has flowed out of China in the last four quarters.

hmm, i'm having trouble remembering, are there any girl characters that are animals? or is there a slight hidden statement that maybe most dudes are animals?

This is looong overdue, but I wanted to share some favorite BoJack characters I designed in collaboration with our lead character artist from season one: Zan Czyzewski ! She helped to flesh out all these turnarounds so beautifully, plus she can draw the everlovin’ heck out of a pair of wedge sneakers.

Subway Station Swarmed With Bees After Man Kicks Open Beehive

by 蔡岳
Mahmoud

hahaha

china-bees-beehive

Hangzhou, Zhejiang – May 10, 2015 – Around 1pm, a beehive containing over a hundred bees was kicked open within Hangzhou’s Jiangling Station subway stop B terminal. Two security officers, two station personnel, and one passenger suffered bee stings, though none of the injuries were serious.

A man carrying a microwave oven box was stopped by staff at the subway’s safety checkpoint. The staff unexpectedly discovered that the box was full of bees, and immediately detained the man, informing him that he was unable to enter the subway.

Undeterred, the man began to explain to the subway staff that he was carrying the bees in order to do a business transaction, and that before he’d set off he’d secured the box of bees. He argued that there would be no problem. The subway staff were unable to persuade the man and called for subway security.

Soon after, Jiangling Station Officer Xu arrived on the scene, “He said his box was firmly secured and there would be no problem. To make his point, he said, ‘It’s secure, if you don’t trust me I’ll kick it and you’ll see,’ at that moment he kicked the box of bees with his foot.”

The box of bees that was allegedly “firmly secured” fell down and over one hundred bees flew into the air.

Observing the scene, police and station personnel quickly organized passengers to scatter, and began killing the bees. Being attracted to light, many of the bees came to rest on the subway platform’s light boxes and fluorescent lights. Police and station personnel used electric mosquito swatters, pesticide, and protective mosquito nets, etc. to kill the bees. After an hour, the bees had been surrounded and exterminated. By 3pm the station had finally been cleared of bees and normal operation resumed.

Two security officers, two station personnel, and one passenger suffered bee stings, though none of the injuries were serious. Through police mediation, the man agreed to compensate the injured, and after being educated on the topic, he then left the station.

Comments from QQ:

军垦战士:

No animal except for guide dogs are allowed in the subway. Can flies enter?

春风明玥:

Peasant Uncle doesn’t know social ethics, and only thinks of his personal interests.

秋枫:

The punishment is too light.

小反:

Frightening Peasant Uncle…

卧听颩雨:

My bees will teach you to not let me into the station.

phan van thai:

Luckily it was a box of bees, imagine if it was a box of poisonous snakes, who would be responsible then? This is a public space right? So why can’t you be considerate of others?

天天:

Chinese people are all pigs, Chinese people should all be killed.

绯玥: (replying to above)

First, this is a hilarious piece of news. One kick and the box opens, I reckon no one expected that, and what can you do about 1000 bees, right? It’s not as if he did it intentionally; he just wanted to prove [the case was secure]. Second, what country are you from, huh? [If] Japanese, buzz off and go mind your own business. In other words, it’s none of your damn business.

‘E-Book Backup’, A Photocopied Hardbound Edition of a Kindle E-Book

by E.D.W. Lynch
Mahmoud

this is v mildly pleasing

E-Book Backup by Jesse England

In his 2012 project E-Book backup, artist Jesse England (previously) used a photocopier to create a physical copy of an Amazon Kindle e-book. England created each page of the “backup” by simply placing the Kindle on the photocopier’s scanner. The reader thus has the experience of reading a photocopied image of each digital page from the e-book. For the project England chose an e-book of George Orwell‘s classic book Nineteen Eighty-Four–as England notes the book was the subject of a controversial e-book recall by Amazon back in 2009. For good measure, England also uploaded a digital version of his paper backup to his Kindle. He does note that the E-Book backup “is best viewed in paper format.”

Avengers 2 is exactly like a large bucket of concession-stand popcorn: it seems great at the time and you just keep shoveling it down because wow, popcorn is delicious, and then you get to the bottom of the bucket and you're thinking, "Oh god, why did I eat that whole thing, what the hell is that artificial butter flavoring made of, anyway?" and then you remember it's misogyny.

Degift Day!

The gift is sitting on your dining room table again. It’s still wrapped, just as you wrapped it. You check the windows, the door. There’s no sign of anyone having entered in the night.

“Happy Late Christmas,” you say to her when you see her at the bar after work. “I could’ve sworn I already gave this to you, but I guess it slipped my mind.”

You watch her unwrap it to reveal the Christopher Nolan boxset you bought for her, the one she unwrapped two nights before Christmas at the potluck, then again two nights after Christmas, then again the night after that, and again the night after that. You swear it. You fucking swear you saw this happen over and over again.

“Oh wow!” she says, exactly as you remember it. “Nolan! You know I love Nolan!”

The room is spinning. This moment is an echo. You search her eyes for some hint that she knows it, that she’s responsible for it. You grip the edge of the table to keep from grabbing her by the collar of her blouse and demanding that she tell you what she’s up to, why she’s doing this to you.

“If you don’t like it you can just regift it if you want,” you offer, your voice sounding louder than you intended.

“Oh I never regift,” she says.

You mutter an excuse me before leaping from the booth to run to the bathroom to vomit.

Tonight you won’t sleep. You’ll sit at the dining room table, the lights on, your eyes never moving from the spot on the table where it’s appeared over and over again. You need to stop the reset. You need the gift to remain in her possession. She has to have a key to your apartment, and perhaps a camera to figure out when you’re in the shower or on the toilet, occupied long enough for her to sneak in and give the gift back to you. You’ve taken up smoking again, you’re drinking coffee, anything to keep you awake and present at that dining room table. She’s going to keep her gift tonight.

The waiting is the hardest. You know that no matter how vigilant you are, that wrapped gift is going to be on your table by morning. No explanation, no merciful clue as to what’s happening to you. The only thing between now and then is the waiting.

Happy Degift Day!

Fascinating Satellite Photos of Seaweed Farms in South Korea

by Christopher Jobson

seaweed-4

NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center just shared these fascinating satellite photos taken in January 2014 over the shallow waters around Sisan Island, South Korea. The tiny patchwork of small squares are entire fields of seaweed that are held in place with ropes and buoys to keep the plants near the surface during high tide but off the seafloor in low tide. Via NASA Earth Observatory:

Since 1970, farmed seaweed production has increased by approximately 8 percent per year. Today, about 90 percent of all the seaweed that humans consume globally is farmed. That may be good for the environment. In comparison to other types of food production, seaweed farming has a light environmental footprint because it does not require fresh water or fertilizer.

You can see much more of what’s happening at NASA lately by following the Goddard Space Flight Center on Flickr.

Isarel aids Al-Qa`idah in Syria

by As'ad AbuKhalil
"Israel, the country which we’re repeatedly told by its cheerleaders in the West, is in the “front line” of the “war on terror” has been acting as al-Qaeda’s de facto ally in Syria. It’s made at least ten bombing raids on the country since 2012- but tellingly, not a single one up to now has been directed at the radical Islamists fighting Assad‘s forces - all have been on Syrian government/army targets or on groups fighting with the Syrian army against the terrorists - such as January‘s attack, which killed a senior Iranian general and six Hezbollah fighters. (Today, news broke that another Israeli air strike had killed “four militants” on the Israel/Syria border - but we don’t know which groups the ‘militants‘ belong to.) "

The “Ding Hai Effect” Hits Hong Kong Stock Market Again

by Amanda

The “Ding Hai Effect” Hits Hong Kong Stock Market Again

Directly following Hong Kong’s TVB announcement that The Greed of Man would be re-broadcast, the Hang Seng Index suddenly plummeted 454 points. The phenomenon is known as the “Ding Hai effect”. When the series was first broadcast in 1992, the main character Ding Hai (played by Adam Cheng) would often purchase Hang Seng futures as prices fell, and then short-sell them resulting in huge profits. At the time, the real-life stockholders in Hong Kong incurred disastrous losses. Since then, every time a T.V. Series featuring Cheng is broadcast, the stock market tumbles, and many investors withdraw.

Hewlett-Packard-01 wrist instrument, 1977

by adafruit

0022Threeqtr

0022Cutaway

HP Virtual Museum: Hewlett-Packard-01 wrist instrument, 1977.

The HP-01 wrist instrument looked like a digital watch but was smarter than many pocket calculators. It performed more than three dozen functions to manipulate and interrelate time, calendar and numeric data. With six interactive functions (time, alarm, timer/stopwatch, date/calendar, calculator and memory) the HP-01 had 28 tiny keys that the user operated with a stylus built into the bracelet.

The HP-01, code-named “Cricket,” was not a successful product for HP. It was too bulky and heavy, and HP sold it though upscale jewelry stores. But miniaturizing the math functions was quite an engineering feat, and when HP discontinued manufacturing the HP-01, its inner workings were destroyed so no one would copy the extraordinarily small package engineering. The HP Archives has a few of the remaining elements.

The HP-01 currently is one of the most sought after collectibles in the antique electronics market, often fetching two or three times its original price ($650 for the silver color, $750 for the gold version).

No-Longer-Fashionable Tibetan Mastiffs More Useful For Hotpot

As Tibetan Mastiffs are moving out of vogue, dogs that once sold for over $200,000 are being discarded by owners and breeders. Put off by high maintenance costs (it can cost up to $50 a day to feed one) and the dogs reputation of attacking strangers (due to their intense loyalty), many are opting to simply abandon the animals. One animal rights activist from Beijing said many of the dogs are picked up by dog vendors, who will transport them to Dongbei and sell them to slaughterhouses at $5 a piece to be used for fur and meat.
