Amazon allows Fire TV users to delete their voice recordings

by Sam Machkovech

Amazon's Fire TV only began shipping to customers yesterday, minutes after its reveal as a high-powered media and games hub, but the online retailer has already opened its Web-based Fire TV controls to anxious customers waiting for their packages to arrive. There's not much to do on the Fire TV management page if the associated device hasn't arrived yet, of course—with one exception.

Clicking through the page's "voice control" option reveals that Amazon "keep[s] the voice recordings associated with your account to learn your voice and how you speak to improve the accuracy of the results provided to you and to improve our services." This is in reference to Fire TV's microphone—built into its remote control—into which users can speak to more quickly search for films, TV series, games, and other content. (Amazon's odd debut advert for the Fire TV focuses squarely on this feature with the help of madcap actor Gary Busey.)

Amazon's data collection policy shouldn't surprise anyone familiar with voice-control offerings from the likes of Google, Apple, and Microsoft, who also collate and learn from user speech, but Amazon's take on voice comes with something novel: the ability to delete your voice records. The Fire TV management page includes a "delete" button with a warning that states, "Deleting voice recordings may degrade your experience using the voice features. Are you sure you wish to continue?"

60 Minutes Dubbed Engines Noise Over Tesla Model S

by timothy
cartechboy (2660665) writes "Did you watch the Tesla 60 Minutes segment the other night? If you did, you might have ended up on the floor rolling around laughing like I did. Since when does the Tesla Model S electric car make audible engine noises? Or downshift? Turns out, 60 Minutes dubbed engine noises and a downshift over the Model S running footage. The show claims it was an editing error. Call it what you want, it was absolutely hilarious. A little note to TV producers assigned to cover Tesla Motors in the future: Electric cars don't upshift or downshift." At least they didn't fraudulently blow it up!

European Parliament Votes For Net Neutrality, Forbids Mobile Roaming Costs

by timothy

whoa yeah dang girl you can get it

First time accepted submitter TBerben (1061176) writes "The European Parliament has voted to accept the telecommunications reform bill. This bill simultaneously forbids mobile providers from charging roaming costs as of December 15, 2015 and guarantees net neutrality. Previous versions of the bill contained a much weaker definition of net neutrality, offering exemptions for 'specialized services,' but this was superseded in an amendment (original link, in Dutch) submitted by Dutch MEP Marietje Schaake (liberal fraction). Note that the legislation is not yet definitive: the Council of Ministers still has the deciding vote, but they are expected to follow the EP's vote."

The hatred is back in USA vs. Mexico

by Ryan Rosenblatt
firehose

' "The fucking ref robbed us. TWICE," yelled one face-painted American as his friend kicked a concrete support.'

welcome to amercia

One of international soccer's best rivalries lost its fire for a year. That fire returned on Wednesday.

GLENDALE -- Mexican fans walked out of University of Phoenix Stadium in full voice, making the concourses echo with chants of "Me-hi-co." Others played drums or blew horns, while many danced and skipped out into the night.

More from our team sites

Mexico was celebrating a draw. Against the United States.

When Jurgen Klinsmann took over the U.S. in August 2011, they were coming off of a 4-2 pasting at the hands of their archrivals in the Gold Cup final. Mexico had been so good that they had been floated as a World Cup darkhorse, while the Americans were a team in transition, to put it nicely.

And lucky for Klinsmann, his first match was against Mexico. Even the most ardent Klinsmann fans didn't envision him getting a result against El Tri and for much of the match, it didn't look like they would. Mexico led 1-0, and it could have been 5-0. But Brek Shea found Robbie Rogers late in the match for an equalizer that earned the Americans a draw.

Not that anyone noticed.

In a rivalry marked by its intensity and hate, which plays out in the stands as much as it does on the field, the U.S. and Mexico could only fill half of Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. It didn't feel like a rivalry match. Mexican fans, expecting a win and uninterested in a meaningless friendly, didn't bother chanting while the cheers of U.S. supporters echoed off the tens of thousands of empty seats.

But the U.S. fans cheered. They had conquered the big, bad Mexicans by walking out with a draw -- one that felt like a win.

Drew Hallowell / Getty Images

A rough stretch followed for Klinsmann, but he insisted that it was all part of "the process." The goal was to get through World Cup qualifying -- and that's what they did -- then shine in Brazil. The Americans finished first in CONCACAF qualifying, including a draw in Mexico and another 2-0 win over El Tri in Columbus, Ohio.

Meanwhile, Mexico had fallen apart. They almost failed to qualify for the World Cup, going through four managers in 2013 and only getting a ticket to Brazil because the U.S. saved them with a win over Panama on the final matchday.

The rivalry was competitive again. It mattered. People cared.

More on USA vs. Mexico

Fans began arriving at University of Phoenix Stadium five hours before the match. Mariachi bands spurred Mexican dance parties in the parking lots, while Americans chanted "dos a cero" at anyone in a green shirt. Bouts of wind and rain didn't scare off fans -- in fact, it just led to more drinking, which led to more dancing, chanting and taunting.

More than 59,000 fans made their way into the stadium, with Mexican supporters outnumbering USMNT fans 4-to-1. Every chant from the U.S. fans was countered by a louder one from the Mexican fans. U.S. fans held up a giant banner that read "De nada, Mexico," a reminder that their neighbors will forever owe them for their trip to Brazil. There were as many unused seats as there was three years ago in Philadelphia, but that was because half of the crowd stood for the entirety of the match.

The buzz and the rivalry were back.

When the U.S. went in front 2-0, "dos a cero" chants filled the stadium as the Mexicans sat stunned. But by the end of the match, after two Mexico goals, the Americans had been drowned out. In the waning minutes, as both teams searched for a winner, it was impossible to make out the various chants and songs, with it all combining into a constant drone of noise that lasted until the final whistle.

"The fucking ref robbed us. TWICE."

While Mexican fans left the stadium to party, U.S. fans left in disgust.

"The fucking ref robbed us. TWICE," yelled one face-painted American as his friend kicked a concrete support.

The U.S. didn't just believe they could beat Mexico -- they believed they would, and only the referee got in the way of that. It was a far cry from Philadelphia, when a fortunate draw sent them into song and dance.

The Americans have come a long way. Mexico have too, albeit in the opposite direction, and with the change in dynamic came the revival of one of the world's best rivalries. It came with a full stadium, drunk fans falling down stairs, competing chants, derogatory songs and most of all, hatred -- beautiful, rivalry-sustaining hatred.

Every 50-win season in NBA history in 1 chart

by Tom Ziller
firehose

add the Thunder to the Sonics and the Sunders are tied for 7th-most

the key to enjoying sports is to always hate the commissioner

Tim Duncan has 15 50-win seasons. How many do all the NBA franchises have?

In honor of Tim Duncan's 15th 50-win season, we put together a chart showing how many such seasons each NBA franchise has in their individual histories. Surprise! The Lakers and Celtics have the most.

50-win-seasons_medium

For franchises that relocated, we transferred their totals with the team with one exception, the Sonics. Because the Thunder are not the Sonics. This really just affected the Sixers (one 50-win season in Syracuse), Lakers (one 50-win season in Minneapolis), Pelicans (a handful in Charlotte), Wizards (a couple in Baltimore), Hawks (St. Louis) and Kings (one each in Cincinnati and Rochester).

The Rockets and Blazers could each still add one to their total this season. The Raptors could earn their first 50-win season in franchise history by winning out. A couple West teams have (very) outside chances of reaching 50.

The biggest lesson from this chart: being a fan of the Warriors, Clippers or Nets is typically an exercise in major frustration. Geez.

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference starts on June 2nd

by Vlad Savov

The 2014 edition of Apple's perennially overbooked Worldwide Developers Conference will take place at San Francisco's Moscone West convention center between the 2nd and 6th of June. Apple promises to enlighten developers about the future of iOS and OS X, offering them "the latest tools and technologies" as well as more than 100 technical sessions and over a thousand Apple engineers to speak to.

Unlike previous years, tickets to the event will be distributed through a random lottery — chosen from the developers who've registered their interest between now and April 7th. The WWDC website will host live streams of the Monday State of the Union keynote and the Apple Design Awards, and videos from all the technical talks will be posted online throughout the week.

Inside Delta's war on canceled flights

by Adi Robertson

'passengers would rather have the annoyance of a two-hour delay than the uncertainty of a canceled flight'

#neverfly

In 2010, Delta Airlines discovered that passengers would rather have the annoyance of a two-hour delay than the uncertainty of a canceled flight, even if it was rebooked within two hours. Thus began a mission to end flight cancellations with a battery of new analytical tools and policies, explained by The Wall Street Journal. This can be as high-tech as developing monitors that can predict when a plane part will fail, or as basic as pushing the desks of maintenance and customer service workers closer together for "easy eavesdropping." Delta was rewarded with 72 cancellation-free days in 2013, a track record well above the industry average.

Noted: New Logo and Identity for Sotheby's by Pentagram

Mercury Rising

New Logo and Identity for Sotheby's by Pentagram

(Est. 1774) "Sotheby's has been uniting collectors with world-class works of art since 1744. Sotheby's became the first international auction house when it expanded from London to New York (1955), the first to conduct sales in Hong Kong (1973), India (1992) and France (2001), and the first international fine art auction house in China (2012). Today, Sotheby's presents auctions in eight different salesrooms, including New York, London, Hong Kong and Paris, and Sotheby's BidNow program allows visitors to view all auctions live online and place bids in real-time from anywhere in the world. Sotheby's offers collectors the resources of Sotheby's Financial Services, the world's only full-service art financing company, as well as private sale opportunities in more than 70 categories, including S|2, the gallery arm of Sotheby's Contemporary Art department, as well as Sotheby's Diamonds and Sotheby's Wine. Sotheby's has a global network of 90 offices in 40 countries and is the oldest company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (BID)."

Design by: Pentagram (Abbott Miller, partner, New York, NY)

Opinion/Notes: I love Mercury, it's one of my favorite serifs of all time, so I really love the simplicity of this. The reason this is not a main Review is because there isn't much to say: it's simply beautiful, understated, and contemporary. I also never thought the previous Gill Sans wordmark was formal or serious enough and this one is.

Related Links: Pentagram project page (plenty more images)

Select Quote: Miller's new system establishes a cohesive look and feel across the company's diverse locations and programs. The goal of the redesign was maintaining the image of a modern global brand while also reflecting the heritage of a company that has been in business for almost 300 years. Miller and his team developed a new wordmark (shifting from the previous Gill Sans-based sans serif to Mercury) and new design standards for stationery and related print collateral, auction catalogues, Sotheby's magazine, the Sotheby's website and app, advertising and promotions, signage and environmental graphics, and auction ephemera like aprons and bid paddles. The program began rolling out in September with the website, and will continue to influence all Sotheby's communications.

It’s Not 2015 Yet But Marty and His Hoverboard Are Already Here!

by James Hobson

Okay now this is seriously awesome. [Rodger Cleye] has made a real working Hoverboard.

You guys might remember the recent [Tony Hawk] and [Christopher Lloyd] viral Hoverboard hoax video… Well, this isn’t that. Nope, not even close. It’s real.

The Hoverboard is a quadrotor on steroids — it features four 1200W brushless motors driving 12″ props, a massive 13.4Ah 5S Li-Po battery, and a [Marty McFly] mannequin wearing the classic red vest. He’s counter-balanced [Marty] and the battery around the rotors which makes for a surprisingly smooth flight. It even has a run-time of over 5 minutes, thanks to a whopping 83% efficiency using the 12″ props.

[Rodger] designed and simulated the entire system in eCalc before construction — He had first attempted a bi-copter design, but opted for the tried and true quad-rotor instead. The frame is made of 1/2″ PVC pipe to conserve the mass budget, but altogether it still weighs an unbelievable 20lbs! How close are we to being able to give toddlers the ability to fly?

Just take a look at the following video — we’re seriously impressed.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsdRZvKFcFo

This has gotta be one of the biggest home-made quads we’ve seen so far. Mind you the Spruce Goose of quadrotors is still a bit bigger…
