Nación Rotonda

A Spanish project comprises three civil engineers and two architects, who construct a visual catalog of urban growth of local municipalities in the last 15 years.

This is brilliant and disappointing.

Church of St. Pierre | Le Corbusier  | José Oubrerie | Miroslava Brooks

Designed to be a church in the model city of Firminy Vert, the construction of Saint-Pierre was begun in 1971, six years after Le Corbusier’s death in 1965. Due to local political conflicts it remained stalled from 1975 to 2003, when the local government declared the mouldering concrete ruin an “architectural heritage” and financed its completion. The building was completed by the French architect, José Oubrerie, Le Corbusier’s student for many years.

It has been used for many different purposes, as a secondary school and as a shelter. As the laicist French state may not use public funds for religious buildings, Saint-Pierre is now used as a cultural venue.

Why the Sharing Economy Is About Desperation, Not Trust

by Soulskill
An anonymous reader writes "Wired recently ran a cover story about the sharing economy — shorthand for the rise of peer-to-peer rental services like Lyft and Airbnb — which they call a cultural and economic breakthrough. They say it has ushered in a 'new era of Internet-enabled intimacy.' An article at New York Magazine has another theory: that it arose because of the weakness in the real economy. Quoting: 'A huge precondition for the sharing economy has been a depressed labor market, in which lots of people are trying to fill holes in their income by monetizing their stuff and their labor in creative ways. In many cases, people join the sharing economy because they've recently lost a full-time job and are piecing together income from several part-time gigs to replace it. In a few cases, it's because the pricing structure of the sharing economy made their old jobs less profitable. (Like full-time taxi drivers who have switched to Lyft or Uber.) In almost every case, what compels people to open up their homes and cars to complete strangers is money, not trust.'"

→ Google+ Is Walking Dead

Alexia Tsotsis and Matthew Panzarino:

According to two sources, Google has apparently been reshuffling the teams that used to form the core of Google+, a group numbering between 1,000 and 1,200 employees. … Basically, talent will be shifting away from the Google+ kingdom and towards Android as a platform, we’re hearing.

I suspect we’ll look back on Google+ as one of the worst strategic moves Google ever made. It has cost them dearly in talent, morale, and the quality of their other products.

By drastically changing strategies, which appears to be what they’re doing, they can probably recover in a few years. Probably.

The story of Spuds MacKenzie, Bud Light's iconic ’80s mascot

by Dante D'Orazio
firehose

spuds was a girl dog!

If you're too young to remember the late ’80s, you might have missed out on one of the most surprising American pop culture phenomenons ever: Spuds MacKenzie. Spuds was the super-cool, wealthy, woman-loving bull terrier that was the face of Bud Light during the period. Animal mascots are nothing new, but Anheuser-Busch's advertising agency was adamant that Spuds was not a dog — he was a man. He did television interviews and even had hotel rooms in his own name to keep up the image, though there's one kink to the whole "macho dog" picture: the mascot was played by a female dog. If you've always wondered about that Bud Light dog, Mental Floss has a good rundown on the history of this American icon.

Did LeBron James stare down Michael Jordan while dunking?

by Seth Rosenthal

So, the Heat are in Charlotte blowing out the Bobcats. LeBron James got a breakaway dunk, as he does, and it looked like this:

Lemj

He looks fully to his right as he gathers, see? What's he looking at? Well, someone's sitting over there:

Mj_medium

If you want to make assumptions, that's LeBron staring down the man whose G.O.A.T. he's after and the man who declined comment on the Donald Sterling situation LeBron sternly addressed Saturday afternoon.

If you don't want to make assumptions, LeBron can lift off for a dunk without looking at the rim, and that's pretty cool, too!

Keyboard Control Episode 4: Resizing Windows with Moom for Mac

by macdrifter
Keyboard Control Episode 4: Resizing Windows with Moom for Mac There's a ludicrous number of ways to manipulate windows on a Mac. Moom is still my favorite (2011 review, Some Moom Tips). Some of these commands may be different for you because Moom allows you to change the shortcuts. The spirit is the same. Ctrl+Shift+m activates the primary Moom menu (this is user defined). There are several built in commands that can be swapped for the keyboard shortcuts in the preferences menu. The most basic shortcuts just involve nudging the window around with the arrow keys. There are user settings to define modifier keys for the arrows to enable additional controls. The custom window sizes can also be assigned to keyboard shortcuts available when Moom is active. For example, I have two commonly used windows sizes assigned for quick access in Moom. If you enable the "Repeat to Show Grid" option in the preferences, you get even more keyboard control over windows. In my case, I hit ctrl+shift+m+m and then choose the layout with the arrow and shift keys. The shift key allows multiple columns and rows to be selected. Moom has excellent mouse controls but the keyboard commands make moving around the display look like magic. Combining the default OS X shortcuts like ⌘+Opt+H to hide all other windows with a good window manager like Moom, BetterSnapTool or BetterTouchTool makes a huge difference in the way I work.
