Snoop Dogg weighs in on the Donald Sterling fiasco
firehose"A message to the motherfucker that owns the Clippers, you bitch-ass redneck white bread chickenshit motherfucker: Fuck you, your mama and everything connected to you, you racist piece of shit. Fuck you."

We turn to our Southern California correspondent Snoop Dogg for interesting takes on the hot, controversial topics of the day.
Have you heard that Donald Sterling is a huge racist jerk? Well, he is. (He has been for a while, but somehow, he did even more racist jerk things.)
Noted Laker fan Snoop Dogg has heard that Donald Sterling is a huge racist jerk, and has thoughts about this. Subtle, considerate thoughts:
"A message to the motherfucker that owns the Clippers, you bitch-ass redneck white bread chickenshit motherfucker: Fuck you, your mama and everything connected to you, you racist piece of shit. Fuck you."
Sterling isn't a redneck -- he's from LA -- and his mama has nothing to do with this, but other than that, we couldn't have said it better ourselves.

Mod adds time travel to Portal 2
A mod for Portal 2 on PC adds "time travel" options so that players may, in effect, use past versions of themselves to complete puzzles in the game.
"Thinking With Time Machine" is the name of the mod; like the original games, players can use it to get a third-person glimpse of Chell elsewhere on the map. The difference is, she's a past version of the player, loaded into the current instance through a tablet-style interactive controller.
It lets players stop and start "recording" her actions and then "play" themselves back, meaning Chell can go stand on a switch or even hand off a companion cube. See it in action in the video above.
Clippers release statement on Donald Sterling comments
firehosewelp

The Clippers reached out to TMZ to release a statement regarding Donald Sterling's latest racist comments.
Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling is under fire after TMZ released a nine-minute tape recording of him purportedly chastising his girlfriend for associating and bringing black people to Clippers games. The Clippers have reached back out to TMZ, releasing a small statement on how the recording is the "antithesis" of his beliefs. Here's the statement, via TMZ:
"Mr. Sterling is emphatic that what is reflected on that recording is not consistent with, nor does it reflect his views, beliefs or feelings. It is the antithesis of who he is, what he believes and how he has lived his life."
And there's this: "He feels terrible that such sentiments are being attributed to him and apologizes to anyone who might have been hurt by them."
Clippers players reportedly met late Friday night to discuss the tape once it was released, and star point guard Chris Paul has stated the National Basketball Players Association will address Sterling's statements "aggressively." The Clippers are in the middle of their playoff run, leading the Golden State Warriors 2-1 in the first round.
Reaction to Sterling
Magic Johnson, who was a specific name dropped during Sterling's rant, LeBron James and figures from around the league have already begun reacting to the tape from Sterling. James took a strong stance, stating there's "no place" for Sterling in the NBA. Sterling has historically been linked to racism, and a small statement like this isn't likely to stop the damage the recording is spreading across the NBA.
Vince Carter drains game-winner for Dallas Mavericks in Game 3
firehose13th Doctor casting update: Vince Carter is already immortal

Carter! For three! BANG!
It was a wild finish in Dallas, but Vince Carter nailed a game-winning corner three to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead over the No. 1 seed San Antonio Spurs. Observe the playoff clutch in action:
Carter hit the shot with just 1.7 seconds left on the clock following Manu Ginobili's almost-game-winning layup on the previous possession. Strut away coolly now, Vince:
Dallas fans got to enjoy a wild finish that ended in their favor. As for Mark Cuban ...
Yep, he was feelin' the Vinsanity. What. A. Finish.

Comixology removes in-app purchases to avoid paying fees to Apple
firehose"To make the transition to the updated apps a bit less painful for its current users, the company's giving out $5 gift cards when you update."
It's about to get a bit more difficult to buy comic books from a mobile device. Comixology is replacing its iOS app today with a new version that removes the ability to purchase comics. The new app is solely a comic book reader, which means that you'll have to visit the company's website to purchase new comics. You can browse comics in the new app and download free comics directly, but paid comics can only be added to your wish list for later purchase online. As with the old app, previously purchased comics can be downloaded and synced directly from the app.
The change certainly isn't an improvement for iOS users, but it's clear why the change has been made: Apple's App Store policies demand that it receive a 30 percent cut of all in-app purchases and subscriptions. By forcing its users to make purchases on the Comixology website, the company doesn't have to give Apple a cut. Amazon — which just purchased Comixology earlier this month — has long played a similar game with its Kindle app for iOS, which is also missing a way to purchase new content.
The Android app has also been updated today, though the changes aren't quite as drastic. In-app purchases are now made through Comixology rather than Google Play, similarly allowing the company to avoid paying Google a cut of its sales. To make the transition to the updated apps a bit less painful for its current users, the company's giving out $5 gift cards when you update.
Facebook-funded Silicon Valley police station, with free Wi-Fi, opens
firehoseFacebook is literally buying police

MENLO PARK, CALIFORNIA—On Saturday, in the presence of area dignitaries, the local police department opened up a new substation in the neighborhood of Belle Haven, just a short block down the street from Facebook’s massive corporate headquarters. This is no ordinary police station. Its renovation, rent, and one officer’s salary have been substantially paid for by Facebook, to the tune of $600,000 over the next two years.
This wealthy Silicon Valley city of 32,000 people boasts a median household income of over $113,000. Kepler’s, a well-known independent bookstore, is one of the retail anchors of its downtown corridor. So far this year, the median home sales price in Menlo Park has been $1.5 million.
A major corporation funding a police department—particularly in a well-to-do city like Menlo Park—seems extremely rare in the United States, if unprecedented.

DEQ fines Portland $40,000 over chlorine-laced drinking water dumped into Johnson Creek
firehose'The state has fined the city of Portland $40,800 for discharging chlorine into Johnson Creek. The chlorine came from drinking water used to test the city's newly constructed Powell Butte reservoir.
The city is required to remove chlorine from drinking water before releasing it into Johnson Creek. According to the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, the city failed to do so 14 times last year.'
I have a funny feeling that the water bureau is going to lose the fuck out of this election
I don't disagree that a metric shitton of reform is needed, but when the options are "status quo" and "hand it over to the biggest corporate water users and Koch-funded groups", I want to walk into city hall with a t-shirt cannon loaded with freshman debate club exercises

Unread is a new iOS app with NewsBlur support

NewsBlur has a free and open API that all of the native mobile apps and website are built on. But the API is not just for official apps. Numerous third-party developers have built apps on the API and today I’m proud to announce a new native iOS app has launched with NewsBlur support.

Unread, by Jared Sinclair, is a unique RSS reader, with a focus on simplicity and cleanliness. Sinclair built Unread because he wanted to see a different kind of reading experience, one where he could focus more on reading well written stories than consuming lots of content. Unread app has a different feel than any other news reader I’ve seen and I think many of the choices made by Sinclair work in a quiet harmony.
In Sinclair’s own words:
Most RSS apps are patterned after email. Noisy parades of dots, dates, and tags trample over their screens. Their source lists look like overflowing inboxes instead of stately tables of contents. Toolbars bristling with options obscure the text. Putting it bluntly, using these apps feels like work.
NewsBlur’s native iOS app certainly does fit this description. And if you want an incredibly well-made alternative, look no further than Unread, available on the App Store.
Gay Oregon judge defends gay marriage ban because no one else will
firehose'McShane, who is openly gay, did an admirable job playing devil’s advocate, questioning whether the people of Oregon should get a chance to vote down the ban before an unelected judge invalidates it. In fact, McShane’s questions were far more incisive than the objections raised by actual gay marriage opponents, whose legal briefs in opposition to marriage equality have been reduced to gibberish by this point.
Still, the spectacle of a one-sided argument does feel a tad like a charade. Fun as it may be to see a vile law become so unpopular that nobody wants to defend it in court, that’s not how justice work in the United States. Hearing renowned advocate Paul Clement’s argument for DOMA disintegrate with a single question at the Supreme Court illustrated just how constitutionally untenable these bans are. Oregon’s defenders of marriage equality had no such moment of clarity on Wednesday.'
