Yesterday, Nintendo announced the release of a cool looking console and handheld Humble Bundle that would be region-locked to North and South America, leaving players in Europe, Australia, and other regions unable to get a bunch of Nintendo games on the cheap. While many of us UK folk were upset by this news, Nintendo did apparently try very hard for several months to make this a worldwide bundle.

Damon Baker, who works in marketing at Nintendo of America, stated on Twitter that several months of work were dedicated to trying to make this a worldwide deal and that he hopes it will still happen in the future. It's currently unclear if he is aiming to bring this same bundle to the rest of the world, or if Europe will get its own unique bundle created, but it seems like those of us outside of America may get a Nintendo Humble Bundle yet.

Throughout my youth, I played video games rather voraciously. I was, as a friend dubbed me, a Nintend-whore. If it was released by Nintendo between the years of 1985 and 1995, I either begged my parents for it, worked my butt off mowing lawns to afford it, or merely coveted it with every shred of my soul. To this day, there are over a dozen NES games I can defeat through sense memory alone. Despite that, however, I cannot describe myself as a "gamer." This is because, sometime around 1997 (about the time side-scrolling video games gave way to the more elaborate 3-D type), I checked out of video games altogether. To this day, I have been baffled and overwhelmed by newer video games, finding them far too elaborate, too involved, and too expensive to get into. I don't have 100 hours to devote to a Halo game. Just this weekend I was chatting with a friend of mine who told me he recently quit LoL after several years of playing because he just couldn't put up with the scumlords and jerkbags that seem to make up a large portion of the player base. Most of us play games to relax and have fun, not to hear about how some 15 year old plans to fornicate with your mother because you (might have) screwed up a gank.

So it may be some consolation to him to hear that Riot is testing a new punishment and reform system on its European Union servers. The system is designed to target problem players who engage in verbal harassment and punish disruptive behavior within 15 minutes of an offense. So the shitheel who griefed you all last match may be punished by a two-week or permanent ban before he can even find another game. That's some swift justice.

The plan is to eventually expand the scope of the system to reward positive behavior and helpful players in an equally swift manner, providing some incentive to act like an actual human being online. We've seen how ineffective the traditional report-and-ban system has been in the past at curbing harassment, so hopefully a two-pronged system that punishes with one hand and rewards with the other will work better in the long term.
