Jimmy Page, the Led Zeppelin guitarist who turned 71 last week, is reportedly dating 25-year-old actress Scarlett Sabet.

As radio station Q107 puts into context below, Page's daughter (also named Scarlet) is 43, which is 18 years older than his new girlfriend.

Jimmy Page has a history of dating much younger women, from his most recent ex-wife Jimena Gomez-Paratcha right back to the early led Zeppelin days. Rolling Stone reports that in the early '70s Page dated a 14-year-old, Lori Maddox.

Common knowledge dictates that most food plants can’t grow in areas fed by salty sea water. But a group of researchers in the Netherlands has found that perhaps that isn’t necessarily the case. Those researchers discovered that the humble potato can not only survive, but thrive in salty soil, and it could spell a food revolution.

The Daily Routines of Famous Creative People cleverly organizes the daily schedules of famous artists, philosophers, writers, and composers as recorded in their own diaries and letters. Not only does it show how they switched gears between creating, sleeping, and leisure time, but the chart is fully interactive including quotes from each individual. I would love to see a version of this with modern creatives (and more women) as well. (via Coudal)

Canada Now Officially Owns The World's Oldest Hockey Stick

by Rebecca Zamon
danipretto

"mmmmaple" (0:17): one of my fave commercials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GBvko-0f1I

A Canadian museum has snapped up the world's oldest-known ice hockey stick -- made out of maple -- for $300,000.

The "Moffatt stick" was hewn in the 1830s in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, "from a single piece of sugar maple," the Canadian Museum of History said Friday.

"Hockey is Canada's game -- we developed it and we cherish it like no other country in the world," said Mark O'Neill, the museum president, who called the stick an example of the facility's "national treasures."

oldest hockey stick

The stick was owned by one family -- the Moffatts -- from its creation until the early 1980s, when it was given to a barbershop owner who then sold it in 2008 to the man the museum bought it from.

The museum, located in Ottawa's suburbs, said that genealogical evidence and oral histories, as well as scientific analysis of the stick's "wood, wear and paint," were used to verify its authenticity.

Hockey-mad Canadians will not be able to see the stick, however, until 2017, when renovations at the museum -- Canada's busiest with 1.2 million visitors per year -- are completed.

Ryan Seacrest Gives George Clooney A Wedding Present At Golden Globes, World Cringes

by Joanna Adams
danipretto

#fail

George and Amal Clooney made their first North American red carpet appearance as a married couple at the 2015 Golden Globes, and Ryan Seacrest may have been more excited to greet the newlyweds than anybody else.

The Cecil B. DeMille award honouree and his multi-hyphenate lawyer wife stopped to chat with the E! host on their way into the awards show, only to receive an unexpected gift. Still excited about the pair's marital status, Seacrest gave George a T-shirt that read "Game Over" to commemorate their new union and poke fun at his former status as one of Hollywood's eternal bachelors.

Amal's "Really?" expression and polite laugh said it all.

Seacrest then pointed out that each member of the crew was wearing the shirt, too. Once the camera came back to the Clooneys, George spun the sentiment and told the single Seacrest, "It's all up to you now."

Well, it's the thought that counts.

SMOKE BREAK #1134 | Inside A Sriracha Sauce Factory With Founder/CEO, David Tran

so the factory isn't shut down and we can stop stock piling?

Hypebeast tours inside a California Sriracha factory, with narration by the sauce company’s founder, David Tran.

Tran walks us through the whole process of the iconic condiment’s lifespan, from inception of idea to execution of product. David started the company in 1980 by hand packing the infamous sauce by hand with a miniature spoon, sourcing only the freshest ingredients to be sure that the element of spice was just right. Now, 35 years later, the only thing that has changed is the process of manufacture, with the quality and origin of Sriracha chillies remaining the same. Quality control is of utmost importance to David with an idealistic business projection to make the sauce spicier in the future. Every detail is painstakingly monitored, even down to the ingenious packaging whereby the color of the lid serves a significant purpose. David Tran says Sriracha can be used on any food so squeeze some onto your breakfast/lunch/dinner and enjoy the video above.

Hamburg is burying the Autobahn and putting parks on top

by Joseph Stromberg
danipretto

love it! and tunnels too!

The Autobahn 7, Germany's longest highway, runs straight through Hamburg. Over the years, it's grown more and more congested, now carrying about 152,000 cars and trucks per day.

To deal with the increasing traffic, the city is turning to a pretty conventional solution: widening virtually the entire stretch of the highway that runs through the city.

But to deal with the noise — and the way that the highway has severed neighborhoods that were connected before it was built in the 1980s — Fast Company reports that the city has come to a pretty interesting solution: they're burying a few miles of the highway and covering it with parks, community gardens, and housing development.

(City of Hamburg)

The project, which is called the Hamburger Deckel and is projected to cost $800 million, comes after 20 years of lobbying from a local residents' initiative called "Ohne Dach ist Krach" (German for "No Roof, Too Much Racket"). Burying the highway is a practical way to meet a city noise abatement ordinance passed in 2005, as the sound barriers built in most places (including virtually everywhere in the US) can only cut down on noise by a factor of about half.

The tunnel project also has some other benefits: in covering what will be an eight-lane freeway, it'll provide a substantial amount of new parkland, along with space to build a neighborhood of 1700 homes. At its northern end, the new park will also link existing parkland, establishing a new greenbelt. Work is starting this year, and it's projected to be finished in 2022.

(HOCHTIEF Solutions)

Of course, there's also another solution to eliminating traffic noise: tearing out urban highways entirely. In the US, Seattle is burying a downtown waterfront highway at a cost of $4.2 billion (and counting), and there's a pretty good case to be made that the city would have been better off removing the highway and replacing it with parks or pedestrian-friendly development.

But there are significant differences between the Hamburg and Seattle projects. One is that the Autobahn 7 is a crucial national highway that carries lots of traffic across the country — something that isn't true for Seattle's Alaskan Way Viaduct — making it much harder to tear down without major disruptions.

(HOCHTIEF Solutions)

Additionally, Hamburg's project is less ambitious, in an engineering sense. Its highway is simply being slightly lowered, with a six-to-ten foot cap placed on top of it. Seattle is taking on the huge challenge of digging the widest deep-bore tunnel ever, 120 feet underground — which explains why the boring machine got stuck last year, halting construction until April at soonest and leading to cost over-runs.

Game of Thrones season 5 premiere date set for April 12

by Todd VanDerWerff
danipretto

YAYAYAYAYAYA. spoiler alert on the actual text and do not click the jaime & tyrion links!!

The fifth season of Game of Thrones will premiere on Sunday, April 12, at 9 p.m. Eastern, HBO announced today at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. The show ended its last season with the characters even more scattered to the winds than usual, so it will be interesting to see how season five draws them back together.

Ostensibly, the fifth season will adapt material from A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons, the fourth and fifth books in George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. However, many storylines from those books — most notably that of Bran Stark, who's traveling North in search of the source of his mystical dreams — have already been depicted in the series. (Indeed, it seems Bran is sitting season five out.)

What we expect to happen

As the show has gone on, it has deviated more and more significantly from Martin's texts, so it's impossible to say with any certainty just what will happen in season five. But we have high hopes for the story of Arya Stark, in particular, as she leaves behind Westeros and travels after her destiny across the Narrow Sea. If her story stays true to the books, she should be training for a very interesting career change soon.

In terms of stories that are deviating from the books, we're interested to see what happens with Arya's older sister, Sansa, who is slowly but surely becoming a master manipulator, with the help of her new, creepy mentor figure Littlefinger. And set photos — which we won't repost here but will link to — suggest big changes for Jaime and Tyrion Lannister.

The show has only grown in popularity with every year. Last season, it officially became HBO's most successful show ever. And with the April release date, we won't have to wait long to find out what happens next.

Veep and Silicon Valley premiere dates

Both the political comedy Veep and the tech world comedy Silicon Valley will also return with Game of Thrones on April 12. They will air at 10 p.m. Eastern and 10:30 p.m. Eastern, respectively.

10 things not enough kids know before going to college

by Christopher Blattman
danipretto

too late

I'm a university professor, with teaching experience at Columbia and Yale. These are the 10 things I've suggested to pretty much all the students who've ever walked through my door for office hours. I don't think the advice applies just to the elite colleges. I went to a large but fairly good state school in Canada, the University of Waterloo. My hope is this applies to students of every stripe.

As it happens, I didn't follow most of this advice myself, and I could have called this list "the 10 things I wish someone had told me." This is probably the hidden subtitle to every advice column you will ever read.

I teach mostly economics, political science, and international development. Most of my students are in the social sciences and plan to go into business, law, or public service. So this list makes the most sense for people like them. I don't really know what it takes to be a physicist or an art historian. Even so, I'm willing to bet a lot of these suggestions make sense for most students.

I won't dwell on what you've probably heard already: Get a well-rounded education and enjoy yourself. That's good advice, and your first and best rules. Here are some other suggestions to help make the most of college.

1) Try careers on for size

Your career is going to be a huge part of your life, and you'll be happier if it suits your strengths and you find it fulfilling. Some people are lucky on their first try. It took me three or four tries to get close.

Don't wait until you finish law or medical school to discover you hate working in your specialty. Try early and often. Test out different careers in the summer — researcher, journalist, medical assistant, nonprofit worker, congressional aide, and so on.

I started out studying accounting and business. Fortunately, I went to a university that helped students work in firms in their specialty as early as their first year. By the time I finished my junior year, I had 12 months of experience in tax and audit, and I knew that not only did I hate it, but I was really, really bad at it.

So I switched my major to economics and tried a summer in management consulting. It was more interesting to me, and I was better at it, but it still wasn't my heart's desire. I finished my BA knowing there were two careers I didn't want to do, and I had a third in mind: international development, possibly within academia. It was a few more years before I got there. But it was faster than if I'd taken my first job at 22.

2) Develop skills that are hard to get outside the university

Your first temptation will be to fill your schedule with courses on fascinating subjects. Do this. Some of my fondest memories are of history or psychology classes that opened my mind to new places and ideas. But don't forget to also use university to build your technical skills.

By technical skills, I mean specialized knowledge that is hard to teach yourself on your own. I put things like math, statistics, ethnography, law, or accounting in this category. These are topics where you need a knowledgeable guide plus the hard commitments of a course to get you through hard material. Often, these skills are also basic building blocks for many lines of work.

For anyone interested in law, public policy, business, economics, medicine — or really any profession — I suggest at least two semesters of statistics, if not more. Data is a bigger and bigger part of the work in these fields, and statistics is the language you need to learn to understand it. I wish I'd had more, both as a management consultant and then as a researcher.

Even if you don't use it in your job, you'll use statistics in life. It's hard to fully appreciate the average New York Times (or Vox) article without knowing that language. And, frankly, when you're 30 you might care about the research on pregnancy, or the research on diseases and drugs when you're 60. It would be nice to have a basic understanding. Once you learn it, you'll be surprised how much of what is written on data is wrong.

3) Learn how to write well

Take writing seriously. You will use it no matter your career. Being able to take complex ideas and explain them in short, straightforward, plain sentences is a skill you will use, whether you're a lawyer, a salesperson, a blogger, or a doctor. You want to learn to think clearly and then write like you speak.

You'll be surprised how many proposals, pitches, reports, and letters you'll write in life. Even if you're not in that line of work, until they put microchips in our brains (which, admittedly, might not be so far off) writing emails will probably be the main way you connect with your bosses, colleagues, friends, and customers.

So how to get better? The short answer is practice. In the last eight years, blogging and paper writing has changed my voice and transformed my writing ability. You might also consider a course in creative, nonfiction, journalism, or business writing.

I didn't, but I wish I had. Instead, I read books on writing. Then, every time I wrote a paper, letter, or blog post, I thought about how I'd become better. Usually I kept just one lesson in mind each week, got better at it, then moved to the next. It helped a lot.

4) Focus on the teacher, not the topic

In my experience, you learn more from great teachers than from great syllabuses. I had too many classes taught by droning bores. I didn't show up, even when I was sitting in the chair. I didn't learn much.

When I think about the classes that shaped me the most, I think about my Marxist Canadian history class, taught by a socialist ideologue. There is not a lot of demand for Canadian history outside of Canada, whatever version you learn, so I can't imagine a situation where I'd apply any of the facts I learned. But the professor was a master at engaging us students in vigorous, often passionate debate. I learned to think, and to challenge some of the basic assumptions I had about my own society.

I tell my own students to pick eight or nine classes based on the syllabus, to go to them all, and then keep the four or five classes with the most engaging professors.

5)  When in doubt, choose the path that keeps the most doors open

If you're like most students, including me at that age, you have no idea what you want to be when you grow up. In cases like this, try not to narrow your options. Sure, take the boutique courses. But stick to mainstream majors, ones with plenty of options at the end: the sciences, history, economics, politics, and so forth.

Take the classes that are the basis of social and natural science: statistics and math.

Plenty of courses in the humanities are also building blocks. With the right professor and syllabus, a history or political theory class will teach you to argue, think, and write. These take more searching, but they are there at every university.

Other basic building blocks might be computer science and, as I mentioned above, writing.

6) Do the minimum foreign language classes

This is one of my most controversial pieces of advice. A lot of people disagree.

Languages are hugely important. And you should learn another (or many others) besides English. But I think they're better learned in immersion, during your summers or before and after college. Maybe take an introductory course or two at university to get you started, or an advanced course or two to solidify what you already know, but only that.

Statistics are not more important than languages. But the opportunity cost of skipping a statistics course is high because it's hard to find ways to learn statistics outside the university. Remember you only get 30 or 40 courses at university. There are a dozen other times and places you can learn a language. Arguably they're better places to learn it too.

I feel the same way about most business and management skills. They are critical to a lot of professions (even academia), but classrooms are poor places to learn them given the alternatives. Exceptions might be more technical skills like finance and accounting.

Note that I say all this as someone who doesn't really speak another language well. I can travel in French and Spanish (barely), and I regret not being any better. But I don't think taking more classes in college would have helped this. I should have made other life choices, like living abroad. This brings me to my next point...

7) Go to places that are unfamiliar to you

Use a summer or a school year to live abroad, ideally a place completely different from home, where you'll come to know local people (and not just the expatriate community).

When I was a student, I didn't leave Canada or the US until I was about 21. One day I realized I couldn't find Portugal on a map, and this shamed me into reading some history and taking a trip to Europe.

I wish I'd spent more than 12 weeks abroad, and I wish I'd stayed longer in one place. Coasting through youth hostels at the pace of one country a week does not really teach you about another life. It wasn't until I started working on research projects in India, Kenya, and Uganda that I started to learn a great deal about the world (and myself).

I'd also encourage people to get outside their comfort zones. When I got to Europe as a 21-year-old, I was so anxious and inexperienced that I found Eastern Europe and even Spain too intimidating and scary. I stuck to more familiar territory.

Ten years later, I unexpectedly found myself working in a war-torn corner of Africa. And that's my career today. I don't recommend it to everyone. It's not necessary to be worldly, by any measure. But I encourage American students to get away from English-speaking countries and Western Europe. Here's where it also makes sense to learn the language.

8)  Take some small classes with professors who can write recommendations

If you're not interested in graduate school, skip to the next piece of advice. But if a master's or a PhD is an option, you will want at least two or three high-quality recommendations from faculty.

To do this, you'll need good relationships with professors. This means one or two small classes with the same faculty member, and several visits to office hours. Maybe a research or teaching assistant position. Or ask the professor to be your thesis or independent study adviser.

If these topics interest you, see my more detailed advice one recommendation letter requests, on how to write to your professors. My blog also has lots of advice on choosing PhD programs and being successful.

9)  Unless you're required to write a thesis, think twice before committing to one

An independent research project can be the perfect capstone to your college years. Sadly, I often see theses that weren't worth the students' investment of time and energy. Some people's time would be better spent acquiring technical skills.

I used to advise students against a senior thesis if they had the choice. After getting lots of disagreement on my blog, I revised my view. A senior thesis can be a great investment if you are dedicated to a question of interest, or if you want to learn how to research, strengthen a relationship with a professor, practice for graduate school, or try out research and writing as a career option.

10)  Blow your mind

At the end of each year of college, you should look back at your thoughts and opinions 12 months before and find them quaint. If not, you probably didn't read or explore or work hard enough.

I know I've succeeded when I read a blog post or paper I wrote a year ago and see three points I should have made and one I shouldn't have. I know I've succeeded when I change my opinions because the facts I know changed. Better yet, I really know I've succeeded when I can see how a handful of new ideas have reshaped the way I understand the world.

Come to think of it, this is not a bad rule for life after college, too. It gets harder to surprise yourself and change your worldview, but there are an awful lot of new facts to learn. The simplest way I do this is reading, especially outside my discipline. I pick up books on unusual people or places.

I also try to read newspapers and magazines that survey a wide range of areas. And I switch up the periodicals I read every so often rather than stick with the same one for years. For the past year I've been reading the New York Review of Books, which discusses books on a hundred subjects. In the past it's been a selection of foreign policy or current affairs journals, or ones about the arts. Or just a diverse Twitter feed of news items.

The other way is finding ways to spend meaningful time and relationships in new places. I'm fortunate that my work brings me to another developing country every so often, and each new place changes the way I think about development. Likewise, back when I was a management consultant, working in new industries and firms made me challenge old beliefs or come up with new ones. Volunteering in organizations did it too. Wherever you go, being a "tourist" doesn't cut it. You need local embedding, even if only for a few weeks or months.

Best Golden Globes Moments (GIFs)

by Chris Jancelewicz
The Golden Globes are like The Academy Awards' more laid-back, fun-loving sibling.

Give celebrities ample alcohol and a more relaxed environment, and the funny just comes naturally. Don't believe me? Check out some of these greatest moments from recent Golden Globes ceremonies (in no particular order):

The 72nd Golden Globes will be held on Sunday, January 11, with the red carpet arrivals starting at 6 p.m. ET.

Their Love Will Go On

In 2009, Kate Winslet won two Globes in one night, and longtime co-star/pal Leonardo DiCaprio was there to blow her a kiss. One of the cuter moments we've seen at an awards show.

Telling It Like It Is

One of the reasons we love Cate Blanchett is she says what's on her mind. Just give her all the awards.

Weird For The Sake Of Weird

By now, we're used to Jennifer Lawrence's antics, but here's one of her first zany awards-show moments, sneaking up on an unsuspecting Taylor Swift.

Bringing The Vulgarity

Awards shows are usually unbearable because of their G-rated nature. Thankfully, people like Elisabeth Moss spice up the proceedings by doing things like flipping the bird on a live red carpet. (Too bad the deft cameraperson did their job and got out of there as fast as possible.)

Just Shameless

Emma Thompson became everyone's favourite celebrity when she tossed her Louboutins aside and gave her martini to the Golden Globe girl to hold while she read the damn card.

Impressions For The Win

In one of her best imitations of the night, co-host Tina Fey took on Johnny Depp. Nailed it.

Awk. Ward.

Sorry Diddy, even Bono doesn't wanna go there.

Living The Dream

Amy Poehler lived many peoples' fantasies by getting up-close and personal with (a then-single) George Clooney.

Saying Goodbye In The Best Possible Way

When "Breaking Bad" walked away with the majority of the TV drama Globes in 2014 (including Best Drama), series star Aaron Paul reminded us why we will never forget Jesse Pinkman, or any other "BB" cast member, ever.

Whoops!

Renee Zellweger took a trip to the bathroom while her award was being presented because she didn't think she was going to win. So much for these things being rigged!

Am I Hallucinating?

Sure, this can be said for us, the audience, as well as Glenn Close herself. Sometimes at the Globes celebs go all out, like when Close did ... um ... this.

Inappropriate City

The fact that this happened -- ever -- is so cringe-inducing it hurts. Yes, that's designer and red-carpet correspondent Isaac Mizrahi feeling the "boning" of Scarlett Johansson's dress. The fact that a) he's a designer and b) he's gay don't make this at all OK. In any universe.

We've All Felt It

Even though Steve Carell is joking (obviously), it's nice to see celebs not taking themselves too seriously with their fellow nominees. Hope the Globes make us laugh as much this time around!

Apple Peanut Butter Delights

by Ree

get in my belly

appleMarlboro Man, the kids, and I are in Colorado this week. We stay in the same place whenever we come here, and one of the challenges is always figuring out what everyone’s going to eat. This is one of my favorite snacks to whip up when we’re away from home, when all I have at my disposal is a single cookie sheet, an oven, a few other basic kitchen items, and whatever grocery staples I pick up at the supermarket the day we arrive.

Hyacinth first enlightened me about this kid-friendly (and mom-friendly, and dad-friendly, and anyone-friendly) snack years and years ago when we first started homeschooling our kids and we used to swap easy recipe ideas; these delicious wonders were all the rage among homeschooling moms (well, all moms!) at the time. They’re a cinch to whip up, and perfectly satisfying for a handful of kids. Think of them as little portable apple-peanut butter pies!

I made a batch yesterday after we finished skiing (Breaking News: I did not fall) and I decided to take a walk on the wild side and take pics of the process for you. It was kind of fun to do a cooking post in a foreign land!

Well, if you can call Colorado foreign. Which you can’t. So never mind.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightStart with an apple or two or nineteen, depending on how many Apple Peanut Butter Delights you wish to wind up with.

These are Honeycrisp. I am obsessed.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightIf you have an apple corer, you can cut out the core. If you don’t, like I didn’t, just cut around the core like this!

Apple Peanut Butter DelightThen just slice the apple pieces…

Apple Peanut Butter DelightInto really thin slices. The apples will only cook in the oven for a short time, so the thinner you can go, the better.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightNext, grab some English muffins! These are whole wheat, but you can use whatever kind you like.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightGrab about a tablespoon of peanut butter per English muffin half…

Apple Peanut Butter DelightAnd smear it all over the surface in an even layer.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightThen come the apples! Lay a few slices on top, stacking them here and there.

And yes. Sometime before 2016, I hope to remove the last of the glitter polish from my thumbnail. It just hasn’t been much of a squeaky wheel lately.

It’s a good thing God doesn’t care about what fingernails look like.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightNow, to make these delights especially delightful, throw some sugar and a little cinnamon into a bowl.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightAnd mix it together.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightI bought the very smallest size of sugar the supermarket had, but this was the smallest cinnamon container they had. If I were smart, I would have brought back the cinnamon I bought last year, or if I’d been really smart, the cinnamon I bought the year before that.

But who remembers to pack cinnamon when they’re going on a family vacation?

Not I, that’s who.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightNext, sprinkle the mixture over the top of each muffin.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightI’m pretty generous with the cinnamon sugar, because eventually it will caramelize under the broiler in the oven and…well, again, that’s where the whole *delightful* thing comes in.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightThen just pop the pan into a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes for the first stage.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightAnd here’s what will happen during that 10 minutes: The English muffin will toast slightly. The peanut butter will become warm and gooey. The apples will soften slightly. And the cinnamon-sugar mixture will settle into the whole thing and create a miracle.

But the miracle’s not over yet.

Apple Peanut Butter DelightAfter this stage, turn on the broiler and pop the pan back into the oven on one of the lower racks for 2 to 3 minutes. Watch them the whole time to make sure they don’t burn….and here’s what will happen during that 2 to 3 minutes…

Apple Peanut Butter DelightThe edges of the English muffins will get slightly crisper, the apples will get nice and hot, and the cinnamon-sugar mixture will bubble and caramelize, and…

Apple Peanut Butter DelightWell, it’s just darn delicious.

And here are some variations:

* Use softened butter instead of peanut butter. You’ll wind up with nice little apple pie treats.
* Use brown sugar instead of white sugar. Or do a mix of white and brown!
* Add a sprinkle of nutmeg to the cinnamon-sugar mixture.
* Change up the bread you use: Bagels, cinnamon-raisin bread, sourdough…yum!

Here’s the handy dandy printable. Enjoy!

Mike Huckabee: "Pimp" Jay-Z is exploiting Beyonce as a "sex object"

by Kelsey McKinney
danipretto

i kinda agree

Mike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and 2008 Republican presidential hopeful who's considering a second run in 2016, has found another way to differentiate himself from President Obama: attacking Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

Huckabee is set to release a book titled God, Guns, Grits and Gravy on January 20, presumably as a move in the invisible primary. According to early excerpts obtained by U.S. News and World Report, Huckabee has some hot opinions about hip-hop's leading couple.

In the book, Huckabee talks about Beyoncé and Jay-Z's performance of "Drunk In Love" at the 2014 Grammy Awards where the two danced around a chair in a cloud of smoke and talent:

"My reaction: Why?" he writes. "Beyoncé is incredibly talented — gifted, in fact. She has an exceptional set of pipes and can actually sing. She is a terrific dancer — without the explicit moves best left for the privacy of her bedroom. Jay-Z is a very shrewd businessman, but I wonder: Does it occur to him that he is arguably crossing the line from husband to pimp by exploiting his wife as a sex object?"

Here's the performance:

Huckabee is right about Beyoncé being talented, but he gets into several levels of muddy sexism with where he goes next. First, Beyoncé's "explicit moves" are mostly done on her own on a chair, and fully fit the themes of the song. Second, any idea that Beyoncé herself is not a shrewd businessman is completely misguided. The woman dropped an album in the middle of the night and no one knew. They are at least equally good business people, and Beyoncé is her own person. If she wants to dance on stage sexily, she will. The idea that Jay-Z controls her decisions is absolutely absurd.

Huckabee's inclusion of the word "arguably" is a smart one. Because outright calling Jay-Z, a rapper, father, and husband, a pimp is actually insane.

NASA Makes Travel Posters For Nearby Earth-Like Planets

danipretto

cute

nasa-travel-posters-1.jpg To get people excited about outerspace, this is a small series of travel posters designed by NASA, advertising nearby (nearby being relative) earth-like planets that have the potential for liquid water on their surfaces. Obviously, I would vacation on any one of these, even without water, just to get away from the other people who live in my apartment building. The fine print on the three posters, in order:
Kepler-186f is the first Earth-size planet discovered in the potentially 'habitable zone' around another star, where liquid water could exist on the planet's surface. Its star is much cooler and redder than our Sun. If plant life does exist on a planet like Kepler-186f, its photosynthesis could have been influenced by the star's red-wavelength photons, making for a color palette that's very different than the greens on Earth. This discovery was made by Kepler, NASA's planet hunting telescope. Twice as big in volume as the Earth, HD 40307g straddles the line between "Super-Earth" and "mini-Neptune" and scientists aren't sure if it has a rocky surface or one that's buried beneath thick layers of gas and ice. One thing is certain though: at eight time the Earth's mass, its gravitational pull is much, much stronger. Like Luke Skywalker's planet "Tatooine" in Star Wars, Kepler-16b orbits a pair of stars. Depicted here as a terrestrial planet, Kepler-16b might also be a gas giant like Saturn. Prospects for life on this unusual world aren't good, as it has a temperature similar to that of dry ice. But the discovery indicates that the movie's iconic double-sunset is anything but science fiction.
Granted distant exo-planets are cool and all, but if we're going to advertise space tourism, why not start a little closer to home? I'm talking about the moon. You don't even need to build a base, just send me up there with a couple warm blankets and some astronaut ice cream and I'll camp it out. I guarantee you won't hear me complaining. "Because you'll be dead." Shhhhhhhhh -- it's how I want to go. Keep going for the other two posters.
