eerieearthling: This particular moment in Star Trek is actually...

eerieearthling:

This particular moment in Star Trek is actually quite important. A lot of people don’t realise that understanding something is not the same as approving of something. This particular episode (A Taste of Armageddon) had a civilization where war was fought on computers instead of on the battlefield and instead of people dying in combat they would send the calculated amount of “casualities” into a camp to die. Kirk is outraged completely by this and rightly should be, but Spock is not so overtly disapproving. He understands why they might think their solution is better for their civilization and takes the time to think about why they are doing it. Even though he can understand why, he still believes it is wrong for them to be doing it.

There is a separation between understanding something and  approving of something that a lot of people seem to miss.

Dancing Shadow Sculptures by Dpt. and Laurent Craste [Updated]

Dancing Shadow Sculptures by Dpt. and Laurent Craste [Updated] shadows projection porcelain light kinetic sculpture ceramics

Parade is an interactive art installation concevied by ceramacist Laurent Craste and digital agency Dpt. for the Chromatic festival in Montreal. At first glance the piece looks rather mundane: two misshapen porcelain vases sit atop a pedestal inside a wood cube, lit from above by an industrial light. But move the light and suddenly the magic happens as shadows projected from the vases animate to life. What a fun piece.

Update: Of course things like this are never as simple as they appear. Dpt. explains further that the animated “shadows” are coming from a hidden projector which tracks the movements of the faux light source. We’ve been tricked! But I suppose that’s kind of the point.

Google apresenta seu… errr… carro.

by Carlos Cardoso

porsche-918-spyder-xl

Japan Learns the Correct Way To Use "F**k"

by Brian Ashcraft

Japan Learns the Correct Way To Use "F**k"

One of the things I've noticed about living in Japan is that the country's non-native speakers are fuck all at using the fucking f-word.

Good thing there's a new book that aims to correct that! As noted by Kotaku reader Chris Hill, Japan recently got a new English instruction book called How to Use Fuck (正しいFUCKの使い方 or Tadashii Fuck no Tsukaikata). The book gives examples and explanations so people in Japan can improve their f-bomb abilities.

As noted by website Hayabusa.bz, the book even provides a detailed explanation of what the fucking word.

Besides teaching essential phrases like "What the fuck?" and "fucked up," the book also explains how to correctly use "shit," "damn," and "hell." Important stuff!

Which looks more enjoyable? The book that tells you how to say, "I brush my teeth" or the one that teaches, "fuck off." Fucking A, that's an easy choice.

This reminds me of English Words That Don't Appear on Tests, but with bad words. How to Use Fuck also comes with an audio CD, so people can practice their accents. You know, so as not to fuck up the pronunciation.
