shortformblog: So you’re about to fly, but your plane is stuck...

shortformblog:

So you’re about to fly, but your plane is stuck on the tarmac. It’s really hot—because the airport in question is in Vegas. Minutes turn to hours. People are starting to go crazy, and a couple of people have passed out. What do you do? If you’re like the people on this flight, you break out into a singalong of “I Believe I Can Fly.”  Which, incredibly, makes the whole wait kind of worth it. (ht Gawker)

I flew out of Vegas a few days ago and it was exactly like this, but with turbulence.

Does Samantha Power Agree With Chas Freeman About Israel?

by Scott McConnell

Chas Freeman, the retired diplomat who translated for Nixon in China and later became an ambassador in the Middle East, notes (in a speech given Wednesday) the way China is viewed in the region now:

In China, the Arabs see a partner who will buy their oil without demanding that they accept a foreign ideology, abandon their way of life, or make other choices they’d rather avoid.  They see a country that is far away and has no imperial agenda in their region but which is technologically competent and likely in time to be militarily powerful.  They see a place to buy things they can use and enjoy.  They see a country that unreservedly welcomes their investments and is grateful for the jobs these create.  They see a major civilization that seems determined to build a partnership with them, does not insult their religion or their way of life, values its reputation as a reliable supplier too much to engage in the promiscuous application of sanctions or other coercive measures, and has no habit of bombing or invading other countries to whose policies it objects.

In short, the Arabs see the Chinese as pretty much like Americans—that is, Americans as we used to be before we decided to experiment with diplomacy-free foreign policy, hit-and-run democratization, regime change, drone wars, and other “neocon” conceits of the age.

How did the United States manage to so thoroughly foul its own image in the region? Freeman’s explanation is hardly “diplomatic” but unerring on the facts:

For fifty years, we have treated the achievement of security for a Jewish homeland in Palestine as our top priority in the Middle East.  We have sought to achieve this by military aid to foster and guarantee Israeli military hegemony in the region and by diplomacy aimed at brokering acceptance of it by its Arab and Muslim neighbors.  The results are in.  At no small cost to the United States in terms of the radicalization of Arab and Muslim opinion, oil embargoes, subsidies, gifts of war materiel, wars, and now anti-American terrorism with global reach, Israel has become a regional military Goliath, enjoying a nuclear monopoly and overwhelming superiority in the region’s battle space.  But U.S. diplomacy has definitively failed.

In no small measure as a result of its own decisions, the Jewish state has no recognized or secure borders.  Although acknowledged as an unwelcome fact, Israel remains a pariah in its region.  In many ways, acceptance of Israel’s legitimacy is receding, not advancing, under the impact of the racial and religious bigotry its policies are seen to exemplify.  Israel appears to have decided to stake its existence on the dubious proposition that it can sustain military superiority over its neighbors in perpetuity.  It has no diplomatic strategy for achieving acceptance by them.  Nor does the United States.

A refusal to face facts like this, or at least to voice them in public, is probably a prerequisite for advancing to a top foreign-policy position in Washington, and a successful Israel lobby  campaign was mounted to prevent Freeman’s appointment to a top intelligence-analysis post in 2009.

But perhaps if you are more “diplomatic” some truthful observations are permitted. Samantha Power has been nominated by Obama as UN ambassador. It seems she’s done a  bit of truth-telling herself in the past, which she’s trying to minimize. Asked in an in-depth television interview to perform a “thought-experiment” about producing a two state solution in Israel-Palestine, Power said there would have to be American readiness to invest as much in building and protecting Palestine as we have in building up Israel’s military. This would need to be done in the face of opposition from a “domestic constituency of tremendous financial and political import.”

The White House is doing its best to reassure everyone that Power is as deferential to Israel as anyone is supposed to be, and a number of Israel-lobby-type people  vouch for her, including many neoconservatives. I don’t agree with the penchant for liberal humanitarian interventionism she is best known for. But I’ll posit a guess here: though Power’s remarks about Israel were “hypothetical,” she knows the score. She’s also something of a loose canon, a  woman who succeeded in academia by being both intelligent and outspoken, and who won’t take to being muzzled. I think she might be interesting at the UN, far more than Susan Rice has been. And bit by bit by bit, the lobby’s hold on America’s discourse is being loosened.

by Ariel Palacios

Acima, cuia, bomba e erva-mate.

População total do Uruguai: 3,3 milhões.

O parlamento o aprovou e Mujica confirmou a lei.

These Aren't the PRISMs You're Looking For

I'm a little obsessed with the story that broke yesterday about PRISM, the NSA/FBI project to gather information from popular Internet services, including Facebook, Google, and Apple.

So, naturally, I've been doing a lot of digging about the story on *.gov websites. In the process, I realized that the U.S. government loves the "PRISM" acronym. There are literally dozens of projects and applications named PRISM at the state and federal level, many with delightfully goofy logos. Here are some of my favorites.

Atomic bombs help solve mystery: does the adult human brain produce new neurons?

Radioactive carbon-14 atoms released by atomic bomb tests are helping scientists determine new neurons produced in the brain (credit: Spalding et al./Cell)

A study in the journal Cell reveals that a significant number of new neurons in the hippocampus — a brain region crucial for memory and learning — are generated in adult humans.

“It was thought for a long time that we are born with a certain number of neurons, and that it is not possible to get new neurons after birth,” says senior study author Jonas Frisén of the Karolinska Institute.

But no one could check this, because there was no way to date the birth of neurons in humans.

Carbon-dating neurons

To do that, Frisén and his team developed an innovative method for dating the birth of neurons that takes advantage of the elevated atmospheric levels of carbon-14, a nonradioactive form of carbon, caused by above-ground nuclear bomb testing more than 50 years ago.

Since the 1963 nuclear test ban treaty, atmospheric levels of “heavy” 14C (carbon-14) have declined at a known rate.

When we eat plants or animal products, we absorb both normal and heavy carbon at the atmospheric ratios present at that time, and the exact atmospheric concentration at any point in time is stamped into DNA every time a new neuron is born. Thus, neurons can be “carbon dated” in a similar way to that used by archeologists.

Mouse Hippocampus

To count neurons in the hippocampus, Swedish researchers injected a substance that made them glow in different colors to distinguish non-neuronal cells from neurons. Shown here: an image of a transgenic mouse hippocampus (credit: Nikon Small World Gallery)

The researchers measured the carbon-14 concentration in DNA from  the hippocampal neurons of deceased humans. They found that 1,400 new neurons in the dentate gyrus.area are added each day — 1.75% per year — during adulthood, and that this rate declines only modestly with age, suggesting that adult hippocampal neurogenesis may contribute to human brain function.

O jojo de empurra tá muito legal :)

Dear Google users—

You may be aware of press reports alleging that Internet companies have joined a secret U.S. government program called PRISM to give the National Security Agency direct access to our servers. As Google’s CEO and Chief Legal Officer, we wanted you to have the facts.

First, we have not joined any program that would give the U.S. government—or any other government—direct access to our servers. Indeed, the U.S. government does not have direct access or a “back door” to the information stored in our data centers. We had not heard of a program called PRISM until yesterday.

Second, we provide user data to governments only in accordance with the law. Our legal team reviews each and every request, and frequently pushes back when requests are overly broad or don’t follow the correct process. Press reports that suggest that Google is providing open-ended access to our users’ data are false, period. Until this week’s reports, we had never heard of the broad type of order that Verizon received—an order that appears to have required them to hand over millions of users’ call records. We were very surprised to learn that such broad orders exist. Any suggestion that Google is disclosing information about our users’ Internet activity on such a scale is completely false.

Finally, this episode confirms what we have long believed—there needs to be a more transparent approach. Google has worked hard, within the confines of the current laws, to be open about the data requests we receive. We post this information on our Transparency Report whenever possible. We were the first company to do this. And, of course, we understand that the U.S. and other governments need to take action to protect their citizens’ safety—including sometimes by using surveillance. But the level of secrecy around the current legal procedures undermines the freedoms we all cherish.

This is pretty cool and eye-opening. I wish someone would do this sort of thing with male 6-pack ab models.

They even Photoshopped the woman behind Selena’s arm, because apparently not only do celebrities have to be thin, but they must also only associate with other thin people…

Enrico Francis has been caught

This pisses me off so incredibly much!

This is ridiculous. And disgusting. beautiful people being photoshopped to fit impossible standards AND most of the non-caucasian women are being white washed so they look more “appealing”

this.

makes.

me.

SO ANGRY. I can’t find the words to say just exactly what I feel about this…gahhhhhh just no.

AND THEY FUCKING PHOTOSHOPPED OUT “ELTON JOHN AIDS FOUNDATION” FOR THIS ENRICO FRANCIS DUDE HOLY FUCK

It is always good to remember that you can be lied to in pictures…

I remember the first time I saw a “before & after airbrushing a model” play-by-play in sassy magazine, with the two pictures side by side. I was probably 13, and it changed my life. thanks, sassy, and thanks whoever did this. if nothing - it’s good to remember how manipulative the media can be. if you can’t fight it - you can at least see it. as a minor celebrity, I cringe everytime allow myself to be photoshopped. but I still allow it. magazines and press work that way. I’ve photoshopped myself for press photos (that pimple? easy to fix. that annoying hair? gonzo. no wrinkles though…I draw the line there.) the most disturbing one for me was the random back-ground woman’s, behind Selena Gomez. the photoshopped the BACKGROUND people? wow. do we love perfect? or do we love human? why isn’t human perfect? what’s happened to us?

The Travel HoodiePillow, A Hooded Travel Pillow For Stylish Napping

by Chris Dignes

GreyHoodiePillow

The Travel HoodiePillow solves two problems at once: hoodies notoriously lack neck support and encourage slouching while travel pillows just don’t have the same comfort of a hoodie. The pillow is inflatable for ease of storage and variable support while the hood’s made from premium sweatshirt material. Working drawstrings add an extra layer of comfort. It’s available to purchase in in black, gray and red on Amazon. We have previously featured the HoodiePillow pillowcase.
