tempeh-princess: afternoonsnoozebutton: Have you heard of Ban...
Have you heard of Ban Bossy? Itâs the new initiative from Lean In and the Girl Scouts thatâs trying to ban âbossyâ and similar words that are used to bring down girls that are ambitious, take risks, and speak up. By changing the way we treat girls who lead, hopefully our generation will someday see more women in leadership roles.Â
You can watch the 1:00 video with Beyonce, Jane Lynch, Condeleeza Rice, and Jennifer Garner here, or visit the Ban Bossy website.Â
donât read the youtube comments on this.
I didnât understand the implications of this stigma until I started my career in a male-dominated field.
Speak up ladies. Start early. Get loud and stay loud.

Dog Adoption Ad Shows Three People Having Really Bad Days That End With the Unconditional Love of A Dog
Christopher LantzMiss my dog.
In this dog adoption ad for the The Mayhew Animal Home in London, England, we see three people having extremely frustrating days at work A rugby ump gets manhandled, a doorman is threatened by young thugs and a young woman with a clipboard is completely ignored despite her best efforts. At the end of the day, however, each of them find at home a dog who is so very happy that their human has arrived home and with unconditional love like that, nothing else matters.

Everyoneâs Dark âSecretsâ Come to Light in the New âGame of Thronesâ Season Four Trailer
Christopher LantzValar Dohaeris
Everyoneâs dark âSecretsâ have come to light in the third trailer released for the upcoming fourth season of Game of Thrones. Season four is scheduled to premiere on HBO April 6th, 2014 at 9 PM. Previously, we wrote about the first and second season four trailers.
Summers span decades. Winters can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.
It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plots, lusts and intrigues; to the vast and savage eastern lands; all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest menâŚall will play the âGame of Thrones.â

âThe Fox & Mr. Andersonâ, A Visual Comparison Between âFantastic Mr. Foxâ and Other Wes Anderson Films
Christopher LantzI have a soft spot for Wes Anderson's films.
âThe Fox & Mr. Andersonâ is a short film from kogonada for Criterion that compares visual imagery from the 2009 stop-motion animation film Fantastic Mr. Fox from director Wes Anderson and the rest of his films. Specifically, it compares the visual elements of certain scenes from Moonrise Kingdom, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, The Darjeeling Limited, and other Wes Anderson films with similar visual shots in Fantastic Mr. Fox.

10 Years Later, My Soul Still Flinches
Christopher LantzI know what Willow means about the erosion of trust all too well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWypWe9UAhQ
I was recently triggered by a dear friend. He had no way of knowing â I donât talk about these things, and on the rare occurrence that it comes up in any context, I take care of it myself. But weâve been close for awhile now, and he deserved some sort of understanding as to why I nearly walked out, no reasons, to clear my head and calm my breathing.
10 years after the abuse, still finding pockets of fear. Trust, & the ability to speak of its breaking, as minefields. <3 to patient sorting
â Willow Brugh (@willowbl00) March 9, 2014
My tendency is to not talk about things until I have both a clear understanding and a clear action to take. If understanding is all that is needed, I sometimes keep that to myself, unless it benefits everyone to express it. Mind you, with a high emotional metabolism, these processes can take from minutes to hours â rarely on the scale of a full or multiple days. But I suppose itâs important to talk about abuse, especially as someone who apparently seems functional.
Corey used to leave me places. We lived in a bad neighborhood in Suffolk, and I was new to the area, and I worked doubles at an Applebees a few miles from home. The one time I tried to walk home late at night, a car stopped to proposition me, and became quite angry when I didnât accede. I was 19 at the time. I didnât have a phone â we only had one, and Corey had taken it, but wasnât answering. Being that poor also meant I didnât have cab fare, there were no buses, and my new coworkers were uncaring. I didnât have my car â he had taken that, too. To do⌠something.. while I worked and he didnât. After that, even when I couldnât get ahold of him, I would wait at the restaurant, sometimes for a couple hours, until he would come to get me. He would then âteaseâ me for how often I had called or texted him.
When I would insist on taking my car with me, it became an argument about trust. Why didnât I trust him to have the car? It was just going to sit in the parking lot all day, whereas he could use it. Didnât I trust him to come get me? Did that mean I didnât trust him at all in anything else? I was a horrible person! He was simply absent minded. My lack of trust was undermining the relationship.
Later, things slowly escalated. We would get into regular yelling matches. He broke his hand from punching the floor when I stated my intentions of leaving, permanently and immediately. I drove him to the hospital instead of driving myself to my cousinâs, crying because I knew the ensuing hospital bills would threaten the move back to Indiana so I could return to school (my parentsâ sneaky trick to get me back into a social safety net). I still donât know the laws about physical abuse if you hit back. It wasnât pretty. And always the underlying thread of distrust. Any fight always came back down to my not trusting him. I finally left him after 2 and a half years, discovering that the problem was not my lack of trust but his untrustworthiness. We still had to live together for awhile, again from his financial insolvency. There was a final morning with him not letting me leave the house, my finally calling the cops as he slammed doors back shut and then stood in front of my car.
Recovery takes time, and Iâm still not done with it. I reflect less often, but more publicly. But itâs important to know that even badasses like me have baggage. So do others.

When an ex-lover in Seattle had pulled my motorcycle battery to get his own going, I lost my shit. In his  excitement over mechanical triumph, he tossed his feature phone towards me to gain my attention while stopped on the curb. He had just removed both the ability to communicate and my transportation. Of course he had no idea why this would be so bad. Nor could he, until I expressed it.
The thing that makes emotional abuse difficult to overcome is that erosion in the baseline of trust. The initial giving of trust is still pretty easy to me, itâs the response to being in an iffy situation and determining how to navigate it. My attempts to vocalize about being uncomfortable in the past meant all the structure of the relationship was torn away (not by me, I know that now). So my knee-jerk response to situations now is that of having to choose to quietly deal with the feelings that Iâm having, or having trust itself questioned. My heart doesnât understand there can be an third option between stoicism and complete tear down. And IÂ like the trust established with the Boston Sweetie (who Iâll note wanted to be called the Boston Strangler here, that is how awesome he is).
But now I have space again to ask questions and think through things safely, I donât have to have a rational reason for feeling the way I feel. Maybe someday I get to be rational about all this again. Maybe. In the meantime, I just have to accept that the people around me might actually want to help, not take my need for help as a personal affront. All I have to do is be brave enough to explain whatâs going on in the tumult of feels, even if it doesnât yet make sense. Especially if it doesnât yet make sense.
Itâs important to know that even the ability to speaking about the abuse is what is ripped away. This is why it is difficult to speak out. The podcast, listed above, has some pretty heart-felt conversation from a variety of people in it. Worth checking out. And speak out. It helps. Even a decade later.

âLast Week Tonight With John Oliverâ Trailer: All the News, Eventually
Christopher LantzI'm so there.
John Oliver, who came up through the ranks at The Daily Show, is about to debut his own comedy news program, and hereâs the first Last Week Tonight With John Oliver trailer. This gig comes after Oliverâs very successful run filling in for Stewart as The Daily Show anchor. Sure, Jon Stewart is still going strong at The Daily Show, and his one-time protege Stephen Colbert is at the top of his game on The Colbert Report. But thereâs room for more comedy in news. (Or more news in comedy?)
The show will air each Sunday night on HBO. Presumably Oliver and his writing team will mine some of the same comic vein familiar to viewers of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, only with the language and content freedom that HBO provides.
This trailer pokes fun at the fact that the show wonât exactly be the most timely presentation of the weekâs news. Itâs a great trailer that really gets across Oliverâs personality, and hopefully augurs good things for the show.
Last Week Tonight With John Oliver debuts on Sunday, April 27 at 11 PM on HBO.

Photos from the Rothschilds' 1972 surrealist ball
Christopher LantzWould so love to host an event like this.
Hang the Bankers has a set of photos from 1972 surrealist ball hosted by Marie-HÊlène de Rothschild at the Château de Ferrières, with Salvador Dali in attendance. Hang the Bankers cites this as evidence of "the underlying ideology and the mind state of the occult elite," which sounds like hogwash to me. I mean, I'm all for reflexively condemning the hyper-rich, but if you're a weird shadowy billionaire aristo, better you should be spending your unimaginable riches on cool dress-up parties than tacky mega-yachts or sabotaging health care bills.
On 12/12/72 Marie-HĂŠlène de Rothschild, member of the most powerful elite family in the world, held a Surrealist Ball at Château de Ferrières, one of the familyâs gigantic mansions. While these events are usually extremely secretive, photographs of this particular Ball surfaced on the web. In short, it is a mix of an âEyes Wide Shutâ-style masked ball mixed with a Lady Gaga-style pop video. Iâm not even kidding.

On The King in Yellow, the strange book behind "True Detective"
"In short, The King in Yellow has gone viral. But why? It's all due to the powerful creative draw of the weird mythos, stories which create, in the words of H.P. Lovecraft, a shared literary universe defined by an "unexplainable dread of outer, unknown forces" and "the daemons of unplumbed space." And that effect is very definitely by design."

Hand-Painted Woodcut Action Figures Based on Characters From George R.R. Martinâs âA Song of Fire and Iceâ
Christopher LantzSo wrong but so good.
Dublin, Ireland artist Mick Minogue has created an amazing collection of hand-painted woodcut action figures based on âbattle damagedâ characters from George R.R. Martinâs epic series of fantasy novels, A Song of Ice and Fire. They are all currently on dislay at the Winter is Coming art show, hosted by George, at the Ltd. Art Gallery in Seattle. thebirdandthebat: postcardsfromspace: emeraldcitycomicon: Just...
Just wanted to take a moment to post our policy on harassment on tumblr, it is also on our website, and will be in the program guide. The image attached is the sign we will have displayed throughout the convention.
Emerald City Comiconâs mission is to create a safe, awesome environment where geeks of all kinds can come together. We have a zero tolerance policy for harassment of any kind.
Harassment includes offensive verbal comments (related to race, gender, sexual orientation, body size, disability, appearance, and religion), overly sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact and unwelcome sexual attention.
Exhibitors, sponsors and guests are subject to our anti-harassment policy as well and have also been informed. In particular, exhibitors should not use images or material that surpasses a PG-13 rating at their booths. Booth staff (including volunteers) should not use over-sexualized clothing/uniforms/costumes.
If a person engages in harassing behavior, ECCC Directors and Department Heads may take any action they deem appropriate, up to and including expulsion from Emerald City Comicon (with no refund). If you are being harassed, witness someone else being harassed or have any other concerns, please contact a member of the Emerald City Comicon staff immediately (identifiable by green Minion t-shirts or black polos/Staff badges). We are happy to contact our security or local law enforcement, provide escort, a safe place, or otherwise assist those experiencing harassment to feel safe for the duration of the convention.
All attendees, exhibitors and staff are subject to this anti-harassment policy and are expected to follow these rules at all Emerald City Comicon events.
Thank you!
Emerald City is one of my very favorite shows in the world, and this is the iceberg-tip of why.
Obligatory panel plug: On Saturday, at 12:40, in Hall D, Laura Hudson, Janelle Asselin, Bobby Roberts, and I will be talking about harassment in geek communities.
Thank you, Emerald City Comic Con for being a positive example for other fan conventions when it comes to harassment issues.
