Control the weather via Twitch and torture these poor souls in London

Interesting idea.

You read that correctly. It's called Survival Billboard, and to be clear, it's a marketing campaign for Rise of the Tomb Raider's launch in the UK -- but it's so strange (and slightly sadistic) that it's worth a mention. Eight people volunteered to...

Windows that Double as Accordion Fold Skylights and Glass-Bottom Balconies

by Kate Sierzputowski

top

More Sky,” a thesis project by architect Aldana Ferrer Garcia, gives those with cramped apartments the chance to spread out—out beyond the walls of one’s living space. The project merges a window, lounge, and skylight, surrounding users in natural light while providing a bit more space just outside their apartment’s confines.

Each of the concepts serves as a niche that can provide more access to natural light and nature within an urban environment. “Hopper Window” allows a nearly full recline, the owner able to glance up into the sky while resting against the accordion-like window. The second, “Casement Window,” is a small semi-circle protruding from the wall, giving a single person the ability to sit cross-legged while glancing out of the overhang. The third, “Awning Window,” is the smallest of the three, just enough room to lean against while glancing down at the world happening below.

The Argentinian architect seeks to address the lack of human scale often found in architecture, and recently completed her Masters of Industrial Design at the Pratt Institute. Her work has been featured in London Deign Week, Interior Design Magazine, Dwell, and The Woodworkers Journal. (via Lost at E Minor)

hers and mine

i’m about 5 or 6 in this photo, on my bed in our rental house on cedar avenue in burbank. i loved that house. it’s the last place i was really a kid.

green was my favorite color back then. my headboard and bedding were green, but my curtains where yellow and i picked them out myself. i distinctly remember that lamp always making me think of beautiful 50′s cocktail dresses from the movies.

this is probably christmas morning. we were really broke, but my mom always made an effort to make holidays memorable back then.

my dad left us pretty much right after this. it all fell to shit then, though it was probably shit for a while before. i was 5, i didn’t know.

i found this picture unexpectedly while tidying up my office. my first thought: “it’s like looking at the last time i would be truly happy until my 30′s.” and my second thought: “it was.”

it took a long time to get back to being me at 5. a lot of unlearning. a lot of forgiving myself. a lot of unscrewing the screw. a lot of time.

but now when i look at me here in this photo, i can do so with fondness rather than discomfort. it’s like all those other years in between have collapsed into a mere ellipses, one i can use to connect the happinesses directly, hers… and mine.

hers… and mine.

hers and mine.

The Mystical Origins of Fruit and Vegetables Photographed by Maciek Jasik

by Kate Sierzputowski
Cooper Griggs

These are awesome!!

01-watermelon_1527

Although it’s recommended we eat five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables daily, many are unaware of the origins, mythology, and symbolism many of our favorite healthy foods hold. Several of the most common vegetables took thousands of years to cultivate, the watermelon was originally known for being bland and buried with pharaohs as a water source in the afterlife, and Buddha considered the pomegranate one of the three most blessed fruits.

Photographer Maciek Jasik is fascinated by the tales behind fruits and vegetables and seeks to reintroduce these mystical qualities back into their being through his eerie depictions of squash, pineapples, horned melons, and others. “The Secret Lives of Fruits and Vegetables” aims to bring back the characteristics “that have been lost amidst the clamor of nutritional statistics,” says Jasik. “Each offers its own indelible powers beyond our narrow habits of thought.”

Jasik achieves this by his use of color and deeply-hued smoke bombs, poking small holes within his subjects to make the smoke subtly waft or flood from the inside. Not sticking to a particular color scheme, the images all convey vastly different moods, an eggplant appearing to be involved in a dark alchemical experiment as the pineapple looks like it is straight from an upbeat advertising shoot.

You can see more vegetative smoke-filled photographs from the NYC-based photographer on his Tumblr and Instagram.

The Attention-Sucking Power of Digital Technology Displayed Through Photography by Antoine Geiger

by Kate Sierzputowski

Making eye contact, a once unavoidable feat when packed into a crowded train car or museum, is now a nearly impossible mission as those around you are almost guaranteed to be sucked into their phone’s screen while scrolling through Facebook or killing digital zombies. Our increasing dependence on the information devices constantly stuck to our hands was the inspiration for artist Antoine Geiger’s series SUR-FAKE, a group of digitally altered photographs depicting random people being sucked into the screens of their phones.

The images show children, businessmen, and tourists with their faces completely lost, the forms stretched like taffy into the portals we use for selfies, email communication, and mindless gaming. The blur imposed by Photoshop completely masks any emotion once seen on the subject’s face, rendering each a personality-less drone. With this altering of the body the artist explains that the project is “placing the screen as an object of ‘mass subculture,’ alienating the relation to our own body, and more generally to the physical world.” All images courtesy Antoine Geiger. (via This Isn’t Happiness)

US prisons allegedly record more inmate calls than they should (update: response)

by Jon Fingas
Cooper Griggs

To me, this is not an issue. I assumed that all calls to and from prisons are recorded.

It might not just be everyday people who've been subject to illegal surveillance -- prisoners may be victims, too. An anonymous hacker has given The Intercept phone records showing that prisons have recorded "at least" 14,000 calls between inmates...

Star Wars Characters Reimagined as Ancient Greek Statues by French Artist Travis Durden

by Kate Sierzputowski

travis-durden-star-wars-greek-statues-designboom-01

I’ve never specifically asked myself what Yoda and and Darth Vader might look like if reimagined as classical Greek nudes, but I can’t say I’m disappointed that somebody made this non-dream a reality. Artist Travis Durden took this idea to an artistic level, using digital technology to sculpt five Star Wars figures out of faux-marble. The heads of each of the sculptures are pulled directly from the movie franchise, while the bodies are sourced from statues found within Paris’s Louvre. The new amalgamations display a softer side to the characters, Darth Vader now sporting tendrils of hair that fall from his once menacing mask, and a stormtrooper casually reads from an ancient text.

The artist behind the sculptures chooses to remain hidden, his artist’s name a mash-up of characters from two of his favorite cult films. [I can only guess where his last name comes from.] Durden is interested in also creating mash-ups within his work, opposite worlds converging to create an original composite. His Star Wars sculptures are his newest works, and can be seen in the exhibition “Contre Attaque,” or counter attack, currently at Galerie Sakura in Paris. Prints are available on Galerie Sakura’s website here. (via Designboom)
