Cake with Whole Pears Baked Inside
I love this baking idea! I've seen berries and fruit slices baked inside cakes, but never entire pears. Deanna Segrave-Daly made this cake with Meyer lemons, a variety of that plant that is increasingly popular with chefs in America. She made her batter with Greek yogurt, a whole vanilla bean and whole wheat pastry flour.
She poached 3 Bosc pears in sugar water. Maybe she did this to keep the pears moist, which I expect would be a problem when baking pears inside a cake. Segrave-Daly sliced the bottoms off the pears so that they could stand upright in the baking pan, then poured the batter in.

HBO commissions 3D street art of The Wall in London
To promote today’s release of Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season in the UK, HBO has commissioned this street art of The Wall in London’s Bishops Square. Painted by street artists 3D Joe and Max, this 10m x 7.5m artwork is the first of its kind to be 3D from more than one angle.
Artist Joe Hill, founder of 3D Joe and Max, comments: “We were delighted to be approached by HBO to commission this artwork – we knew we had to do something really special to match the sheer scale of this phenomenal TV show that has swept the globe. That’s why The Wall in 3D works from more than one angle – making it a first in the 3D art world.”
Fans and passersby are encouraged to interact with the artwork; with the giant canvas appearing to look 3D it makes for fantastic picture opportunities. But hurry, as the art will be there for one day only.
Game of Thrones: The Complete Third Season is out now in the UK on Blu-ray & DVD, courtesy of HBO Home Entertainment. Order it now at Amazon or the HBO Store. It hits US stores tomorrow.

Your Country’s History in a Nutshell
The question at reddit was “what's the TL;DR of your country's entire history?” The short answers were brilliant. DeviantART member think0 took the best and illustrated them on the nations’ flags. Above are the flags for Austria, Canada, and Russia. See the rest at Buzzfeed.

New York-based artist Daniel Rozin creates amazing installations and sculptures that have the ability respond to the presence of a viewer. Among his best known works are an ongoing series of interactive mirrors built from complex arrays of moving objects including wooden pegs, circular bands of laminated rings, plastic spokes and even pieces of discarded trash. Using custom software and video sensors Rozin has the sculptures react in real-time to create a live visual representation of a viewer’s likeness. Via bitforms gallery:
Merging the geometric with the participatory, Rozin’s installations have long been celebrated for their kinetic and interactive properties. Grounded in gestures of the body, the mirror is a central theme of Rozin’s practice. In his art, surface transformation becomes a means to explore animated behavior, representation, and illusion.
Since the late 1990s, his constructions have also investigated the psychological and optical cues inherent to image building, such as pattern and the materiality of the picture plane. Often the grid is carefully controlled with a computer and custom software. Visual structures such as that of haystacks, woven fabric, stone mosaics, the pixel, and particulate accumulations are among the many influences and diverse textures evoked by his installations.
This fall Rozin will unveil a new installation commissioned for the Taiwan Taoyuan international airport, and his most recent solo exhibition, Angles, was held at bitforms gallery last year. All photo and video courtesy bitforms gallery. (via Hi-Fructose)
Rooftoppers Secretly Climb 650-Meter-High Crane in Shanghai
Russian photographers and adrenaline junkies Vitaly Raskalov and Vadim Makhorov, who are no strangers to traveling to the world's towering skyscrapers and climbing them with absolutely no safety gear, have recently conquered the second tallest building in the world. The daredevil duo managed to gain access to China's Shanghai Tower earlier this month, ascend the 650-meter-high structure, and take some incredible photos from their unique viewpoints.
As if rooftopping/skywalking and photographing from such great heights wasn't enough, the two ventured off with the added pressure of sneaking into the construction site to scale the unfinished building while the city was busy celebrating the Chinese New Year. Raskalov says, "Aware of the strict Chinese law, we prepared carefully and picked an appropriate date, the Chinese New Year day. At that time the security was less watchful, workers were on vacations, and cranes did not work. We got to the crane at around midnight. It took us almost two hours to get on the 120th floor by foot. And also, we spend almost 18 hours on top of the building, sleeping and waiting for better weather."
Watch their heart-pounding adventure in the video, below.
