Artist Installs Flocks of Surveillance Cameras and Satellite Dishes in Outdoor Settings
From far away Czech artist Jakub Geltner's works appear as flocks of birds, seagulls and pigeons gathered on clusters of rocks or resting just beneath a busy overpass. When one looks closer however they realize the groupings are not perched birds, but rather surveillance cameras and satellite dishes the artist has installed as a part of his series “Nest.”
Geltner’s most recent installation is titled ‘Nest 05,’ which was presented at the 2015 Sculpture by the Sea in Aarhus, Denmark. The installation, which covers a stretch of mossy rocks, explores the notion of surveillance in even our most peaceful places—the areas we seek when we want to escape.
The Prague-based artist has been installing these works since 2011, bringing together groups of technological equipment commonly used to observe, and turning them into the focal point for the viewer. Within the last four years his works have been placed at a former elementary school, church facade, waterfront, and the skeleton structure of a former KV KSC (Regional Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia).
Geltner lives and works in Prague and graduated from two universities also in the city, Czech Technical University in 2004 and the Academy of Fine Arts in 2013. (via iGNANT)

capricorn one (1977)
i put this in our dvd queue with much trepidation.
this is one of my *favorite* childhood re-watchable sci-fi films. i loooove this movie. love love love.
so when i realized it was on netflix, i put it in the dvd queue with more than a bit of apprehension given the years since this tickled my toes.
just finished my first watch of this since 1980, and it was so fucking great. also… he loved it. my 8-year old geek cred is intact.
this film is far better than i even remembered. the cinematography and acting are more professionally adept than i’d recalled from my 70′s film memory.
it’s got a twist. so try to know nothing about it before you see it. just put it in your dvd queue and thank me later. :o)

Timelapse Video of a Damaged Black & White Portrait Restored and Colorized by Joaquin Villaverde
Cooper GriggsThis is fucking incredible.
From friends who are digital artists, retouchers, or illustrators, I sometimes hear stories of clients who suggest projects should go faster or simply cost less because the software “does it all for you.” While the tools are indeed more efficient and impressive with each new Photoshop or Illustrator release, the skill required to master those tools is still substantial. Case in point, this new time-lapse from Argentinian photographer and retoucher Joaquin Villaverde who demonstrates his Photoshop abilities by giving new life to a severely damaged black and white portrait of a girl. The clip shows two hours of work condensed into three minutes. (via PetaPixel)

Mentor vs. Apprentice: Ridiculously Amazing Father Versus Daughter Beatboxing
In the course of raising a child there comes a series of strange moments in when you discover your child is obtaining skills and perfecting their abilities that surpass what you yourself are capable of. It’s a humbling and awesome thing to witness. Such is the case with this friendly battle between St. Louis-based beatboxer Nicole Paris and her dad. He’s definitely a talented beatboxer and taught his daughter well, but it becomes extremely clear she’s taken things to a ridiculously different level. The video is a follow-up to a battle the duo posted online last year. Amazing. I’ve already watched this three times this morning. (via Leonard Beaty, Ambrosia for Heads, thnx Jess!)
